Before and after finding a pile of raccoon poop… She was having the time of her life.
She did not enjoy the cold hose bath in the driveway but I had absolutely no sympathy.
We're excited to let you know that we're celebrating the Cocker Spaniel on the AKC's Facebook page, Instagram Stories, and website today! Our Breed of the Day series highlights a different breed Monday - Friday to educate our followers on AKC-recognized breeds. While this sub is always for the Cocker Spaniel fans, we're loving all of the anecdotes about this wonderful breed on our posts.
Help Us Wish Abby a Happy Birthday 🎂

Anything better than when your wheatens hair grows out?
Wheaten suddenly aggressive towards other dogs?
My Wheaten always loved other dogs, she's always been super sweet to everyone. Recently things have changed...if she cannot say Hi to another dog, she goes crazy, will growl and bark but her tail is still wagging. (I kind of think shes pissed she cannot say hi, but Im not sure)
Last night she went to meet another dog and her hair stood up and she rounded her back and tried to go after him (well they tried to go after each other)
Ive never seen anything like it. Im not sure if I should keep her away from other dogs now, or if this was a one time thing?
The ONLY thing thats different is we are starting to walk her with a front loop harness and are keeping her on a short leash because shes a big time puller.
she's 5, if that helps.
How do you motivate your wheatons?
Hi!
For the wheaton owners who live in the city, and have picky eaters -
How do you motivate them to pay attention to you? For example, when crossing the roads with other dogs on the street (and for them to not react), or to have great recall?
I can have whatever snack in the world, but he won't take the snack as a reward, he'll just spit it out.
I'm looking to improve his ability to ignore other dogs on the street and thinking of new ways to interest him, or ultimately reward him for good behavior/ignoring other dogs/etc.
Losing a member of our mixed wheaten household .. advice ?
Devastated that we are losing our sweetest sister tomorrow .. she is the younger sister and lymphoma sucks. She is a mixed breed, high energy, ray of sunshine and her brother is an 8 yr old soft coated wheaten that loves her .. they have been together for 4 years (she was my husbands, I had the wheaten). This is our family. Complete. Whole. Scared for what happens to us after tomorrow.
Our wheaten is so laid back, not at all food motivated (will skip meals for 1.5 days .. rarely eats two full meals a day) and his sister is the reason he would clean a bowl .. out of spite just so she couldn’t have the dinner he didn’t even want.
They are the most beautiful odd couple. Our household is heartbroken and I can’t imagine life without the little Bonita (nickname) around to bring the joy and playful out of our wheaten. She is responsible for tug, wrestle, chase .. she gets him up and going even if she’s a bit annoying at times, what siblings aren’t? I think he is going to be very sad without her.
Looking for advice .. will our wheaten want another playmate ? He is friendly with other dogs but these two shared a very special bond. What did you do? How did it turn out ?
Snugs all your pups. Enjoy all the moments. Thanks for any guidance.
Looking for Toothpaste Recommendations
We did a poor job acclimating our 5-year old Wheatie Indy to toothbrushing, but he doesn’t even like the taste of the stuff so it was really difficult. He gets his teeth brushed every time he gets groomed but of course that’s not enough and his breath is awful.
Pic shows two different toothpastes that he wants nothing to do with. Getting to lick some off your finger is supposed to be Step One to eventually getting him to tolerate (or even like?) getting his teeth brushed, but he smells it and actively walks away from it.
Anyone have a toothpaste they can recommend that your Wheatie LOVES?
Pacing
My nearly 13 year old wheaten tends to pace and is bumping into walls- is this a sign of dementia?
