I'm currently writing a crossover fic with a pairing that literally doesn't exist on Ao3, had to stablish the new tag and everything. I'm really nervous because what if no one even finds it or reads it? I know we write fanfiction for ourselves first and foremost, but it's still nice to have other people read and like it as well.
Has anyone ever started a new ship like this? I mean people obviously have, but it doesn't happen often. If you have, any tips?
I feel so bad because they'll be waiting for ages!!
Usually when I'm looking for something specific, I just cater the tags for that but with this one, I wouldn't know where to start without getting 99% things I don't want so here it goes.
I'm looking for a fic where one of the main characters has died before the start of the fic and somehow unexpectedly has come back to life. Actually resurrection, no ghost type shenanigans. I'm looking for the grief of losing someone that transforms in the disbelief that their somehow back. It doesn't matter if they were a couple of friends before, but they should have known each other.
Fandom doesn't matter, I'm willing to give everything a shot. I tend to read M/M, but again, willing to give it all a shot. Preferably something longer that like, 5k, no max length.
I'm aware it's super specific and don't think I'll get much from it, but might as well try haha
Got this comment on my fic and it really rings as ai to me (based on wording/the pfp of the twt account), but I don’t get the point of leaving an ai generated comment like this?? So I’m not 100% sure
So I've been occasionally writing a lotm (lord of the mysteries) fanfic for a couple of weeks but have no idea where to post it? I thought of posting it on webnovel but I heard they pay scraps and force you to give them ownership over your material, is this true? What about RoyalRoad, do they allow fanfics? If there are writers here please advise. Also, can fanfics be monetized? This is not self promo as I genuinely don't know about these matters and just want advice on which platforms are suitable for me.
So, a few months ago I was looking for a fanfiction with a specific trope in a fandom but didn't find it. Moved by disperation and hyperfixation, I ended up imagining it myself, and ended up writing the outline for a very accurate multichapter fic, with specific details, scenes that moved me, all the tropes that made me happy - for context, it ended up being a 12k words summary. The only problem is that I was not going to actually write it myself. You see, I'm not bad at writing (with some language limitations since English is not my first language) but I HATE it. I love imagining stories, but descriptions, all those pronouns and "he said, she whispered" and building up a scene to the point I want my charachters to be for something to happen, it's too slow, I always hated it and this is the reason why I always left my fanfictions unfinished and the reason I will never be a good writer.
That said, I really really really wanted to read this fanfiction I imagined, so I asked AI for help, with the idea of doing it for myself only. It used what I wrote, put in my original charachters, all the details I mentioned, but filled the blanks, gave me the right words, rendered the sentences cohesive. I edited everything I didn't like, changed the tone accordingly, corrected the inconsistencies, spent hours modeling it until it was exactly what I had in mind, and voilà... it's actually good. I like it. A lot.
Now my question is: I have a fanfiction that I created in the substance and imagined, that I looked for before but never found in the archive, but it was written using AI; should I publish it (of course disclosing AI assistance in the tags) so that others like me could actually enjoy it, or this kind of AI usage is enough to make it unnacceptable?
I want to make clear that if I publish I don't really care about engagement, it's a good story and I think others could look for it the way I did and like it, but I really don't want to offend anyone and I'm scared of backlash. Publishing it without disclosing the role of AI would be easier but I would never do something this awful and disrespectful toward real writers... What should I do?
UPDATE: Thank you everyone, you were actually kinder than what I feared. I came to the following decision: I'll leave on ao3 only my old works (the ones I actually wrote), I'll probably post on tumblr a version of the summary so that if someone is curious they can use my idea. As for the AI fic, I'll keep it for myself until I'll find a place on the internet dedicated to only AI assisted writings, so that it will be clear from the start what it is without offending anyone.
So. I have just finished a purely self-indulgent fic that I never would have thought so many readers would enjoy.
Long story short, I’ve been approached about both beta reading and translations.
The thing is, five years ago I would have said yes with no thought of it at all, I'm all in favor of community projects. But nowadays... I'm not so sure and part of it is "the tech that must not be named."
Look, I'm not proud of the spelling mistakes I make because English isn’t my first language but... I don't know, at least right now I'm not being accused of using this tech for writing.
I can't help thinking my imperfect English is protecting me from all this witch-hunt around this new tech.
Also: what if the people offering to translate or beta my fic do use this tech? They might say they aren't but... How can one be sure?
What would YOU do?
EDIT: After reading your opinions, I’ve decided not to have a beta reader or a translator. As many of you have pointed out, my writing could already be fed into any LLM, but I don’t feel comfortable facilitating that myself. Thank you for the kindness and patience in your replies. <3
Hello! I'm sure much of us are familiar with the recent drama over a bunch of fics being exposed for using Claude AI, due to a Claude-specific html tag being embedded in their code. For those out of the loop, here's a link to a masterpost on the heated rivalry fic subreddit which explains it and links to the document with details on the methodology. Most notably, the document provides a site skin which automatically turns a fic red when the tag is detected.
Inspired by this methodology, I did some digging through the properly tagged AI fics, and have identified two more html tags left by different AIs. I will note that these have the same limitations as the original one -- It only identifies fics which have been directly copy-pasted from the AI text box, so it is quite easily evaded. Still, I thought it worth sharing the tags I identified.
The tags:
PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer
is left when copy/pasting multiple paragraphs from ChatGPT into the rich text box.
ds-markdown-paragraph
is left by AI models which use the ds-markdown React component, which is a typing animation tool designed specifically for use by LLMs.
To add these tags to your site skin: open your site skin, copy/paste the filter provided in the document at the bottom, and then replace each instance of "font-claude-response-body" with the tag you'd like to filter -- you'll have to do it twice, once for each tag, to filter both of these.
I am intentionally choosing not to link any of the fics which contain these tags, after seeing the harassment directed at the authors named in the original document. I'm sharing so that you can curate your own reading - not to call out any individual author or fic.
I have two WIPs to finish, a short to get on with (I'm close to the end of it now) and another story just marches in, demanding to be told. I was a sane and normal human being until I discovered AO3. And that's it, back to scratching the irritating itch in my brain. Arghhhhh!
In the past week I have seen multiple fanfic authors say a character handled a bad situation by diffusing it.
Please don't have your characters diffuse things unless they're adding sugar to their coffee or putting a toxic gas in the ventilation system.
I see a lot of people posting negative “things I don’t like” or pet peeve posts, so here’s a nicer post for us all to engage in!
I’ll go furst :3
I love when people research medical terms and/or research the main parts of the fic. It makes me respect them greatly, and I love supporting authors who put genuine care into the accuracy of their fic.
What the title says, basically last night at 1 AM i decided to add that "do not feed my work to AI" tag because I didn't want that to happen, and so I did, right? But I went on "edit my works" on my profile, and then it just deleted all additional tags for my fics. I've written some potentially triggering content under anonymous so I'm worried that someone might accidentally get triggered because I haven't went back to manually retag them, I've already retagged around six of my works(?) Mostly ones I'm currently working on/ explicit oneshots and my most popular fics but I don't really have the motivation to do it to the rest and I was wondering if there was a way to fix this without manually retagging them, especially considering a lot of them had MANY tags and i'd rather not stay up till 3 AM trying to retag them again because I'm also horribly sick
TLDR: i was sick and accidentally deleted all the tags on all my fics at 1 AM. How do i fix this without manually retagging all of them?
Thank you in advance! ♡

This is our dedicated megathread for the twitter thread (and document) from John Doe that outlines a new signal for Claude AI use in fic. This document includes what the signal is and how it makes its way into fics. It includes as well a list of fics where this signal was found.
As a mod team, we were able to recreate this specific signal within a test fic using the Claude web app and AO3 as of evening 26.06.29 EDT. This is a signal that Claude was used in the author’s writing process in some way, as the signal is a part of an HTML tag embedded in the text copied over from Claude.
All other posts regarding this topic will be removed and redirected here. This is a developing story, any updates will be added here, and additional mod posts may be made as needed.
Per Reddit’s rules, do not leave Reddit to engage with anyone mentioned. Per our sub rules as well as the document (see below), do not bully or harass any authors listed in the document.
Verbatim from John Doe:
Thank you
Hi, not sure how to word this well, but does anybody know of any AI detectors for fanfiction that aren’t faulty? I tried one on my own work (unpublished) and it came back 71% chance of AI usage. I have never used AI when writing, nor have I even used things like ChatGPT in general, so I’m unsure how the result comes back so strongly. Just wanted to know if anybody knew of any AI detectors that worked well for them when posting fics? I don’t want to post my work and be accused of using AI when I know I haven’t with no physical proof to show otherwise.
Genuine question, do people not read WIP fics as much anymore? I just posted the first chapter for my Heated Rivalry Hollanov fic (it’s finished and I’ll be posting a new chapter weekly), but it’s only gotten 24 hits and 2 kudos. I posted a photo above for reference.
I know it’s still very new so things can change, but I just found the lack of engagement a little surprising because I wasn’t used to it.
I haven’t posted a wip in years since I’ve mostly been writing one shots, so I was just trying to figure out if this was standard or if I should maybe try and tag better.
Thoughts? Do you read unfinished fics?
I write a Lord of the Rings slow burn that's still in progress (over 150k words at this point). It's not a popular fic, it doesn't even have 200 kudos, but a handful of people comment chapter by chapter and keep coming back.
Today I found out one of them printed the whole thing and bound it just to have it on paper. They even posted the whole saga of fighting their printer for fifteen minutes to get it done — ink-stained hands and all. I literally cried.
I know kudos aren't everything, but it's so easy to feel like no one's really reading when the numbers are small. This was the reminder I didn't know I needed. Happiest thing that's happened to me all month 💚
Hey y’all. I was reading a funnybunny fic called “Your Stupid Face” the other day and was really enjoying it! But now, when I revisit that tab on my phone, it’s marked as a “Mystery Work” and can’t be read. It also says it’s a part of a challenge and that’s why its status changed? I don’t know. I was hoping someone else out there had more info. I was really hoping to continue reading it!
Someone called John Doe has created an AI detection skin for ao3.
