Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Books set in Poland/written by Polish authors?

Hello, first of all sorry if this isn't your usual type of posts but I figured who better to ask than the Polish sub itself.

I'll be visiting Poland soon and I'd like to read some literature to really get in the mood. As I'm practically a noob when it comes to Polish authors or even books set in Poland, I'd appreciate some recommendations.

So far the only book I read that's set in Poland was *The Tin Drum* by Gunter Grass (I have mixed feelings about the book as I hated the protagonist, but I definitely want to visit Gdansk because of it).

Some of my preferences:

-preferably female authors (not obligatory, but I do try to read more books written by women)

-I enjoy historical fiction and magical realism

-I dislike books where nothing ever happens, and I prefer an interesting plot to just psilosophising

-I enjoy mysteries/books with eerie atmosphere

They can be new or old, ideally from the 20th century or more recent, but everything works really.

Thanks you immensely in advance!

Local advice

First time in Poland — Solo traveler from Egypt looking for local advice!

Hi everyone!

I’ll be visiting Poland for the first time, traveling solo from August 26 to September 2.

My plan is to split the trip between Warsaw and Kraków, but I haven’t decided yet how many days to spend in each city, so I’d really appreciate some local advice.

A few things I’d love your help with:

- Which neighborhoods would you recommend staying in? well-connected, and reasonably priced — I’m traveling on a budget.

- What places are genuinely worth visiting, besides the obvious tourist attractions?

- Any good local food spots, cafés, markets, parks, or places where locals actually hang out?

- Is it easy to meet people and socialize as a solo traveler, or are there certain places/events you’d recommend?

I’m not looking for a luxury trip — I’d rather keep things economical, experience the cities properly, meet some people, and get a feel for everyday Poland rather than just checking tourist attractions off a list.

Also, if anyone happens to be around Warsaw or Kraków during those dates and feels like showing a traveler their favorite part of the city, I’d be happy to meet some locals.

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to finally seeing Poland

I'm from Denmark and cost of living is quite high. I spend 240 Euro on food. No take away/eat out. Just grocereis. How much do you spend if you do the same like me?

I'm a big man who eat alot and live in Denmark

Cost of living here is kinda high and I spend 240 Euro on food monthly without any take away at all!

What about there if you still want to live as cheap as possible while still getting enough nutrition.

How much Euro would you spend on groceries monthly?

Advice for visit to Poland with my family

Hi All,

Looking for an advice.

We are Bulgarian family.
Usually every September with my wife and daughter we are having a road trip to various parts of Europe.

This year we plan to visit Poland especially Krakow and Warsaw.
In recent months , I have read about various ‘incidents’ / ‘aggression’ towards specific migrant people.
To some people Bulgarian language might sound like some ‘specific’ language.

I know that the media can produce fake news or over expose some of the things.

That’s why I want to ask real people.

Do you think there is any danger for me and my family to spend 10days visiting Poland?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Thanks to all for the comments! We will surely enjoy our trip to Poland.

What do Polish people think of the Scottish?

I've worked, lived and partied with many Polish who immigrated to Scotland. We seem to have a large population here in Scotland, even my neighbours are Polish.

What is the average opinion of Scotland / Scottish people in Poland?

Bonus question: what do Polish people think of the English?

How bad is racism in poland actually?

I'm 100% Polish, but raised outside of Poland. It's my first language, I have polish friends, I worked for a Polish company for 2 years and met hundreds of amazing Polish people, I visit often, and the people in my community - of all ages - are amazing and kind.

Outside of Poland, I grew up around conservative older Polish people and they were closeted racists, but I understood that it was out of ignorance, and they never openly treated people with disrespect, it was just the things they said at home or around other polish people.

The thing is, my husband has a dark complexion and coily hair and I never thought about racism being an issue until this past month.

I guess my social media has somehow reached a polish demographic this past month and hevery single day I have been waking up to death threats, insults, (creative, admittedly) but insane things being written to me and about me, all because they saw pictures of me and my husband?

We were about to travel to Poland for a road trip and I don't know now...I guess all this time I had a good experience in Poland because I'm Polish? :/

I'm thinking of worst case scenarios and I'm imagining myself physically fighting people and I really do not feel like fighting people on vacation, my cortisol levels will be like pheeeeewwww too high.

Moving to Poland?

Hello,
I am 4th year medical student in Bulgaria and a native bulgarian. Recently the political and economical situation hasn’t been good in Bulgaria as it’s becoming unsafe so i have been thinking about moving abroad.

I have travelled to few cities in Poland and i find it very admirable so i have been considering moving there permanently.
Of course i will learn the language but i am wondering how’s living in Poland for foreigners?
Is it difficult to work as a doctor there, is it hard to find a residency program? Also what are polish people views over bulgarians, i know many countries who don’t like us because of politics and gypsies?
Is there any kind of discrimination towards foreigners especially doctors? Also how’s the housing situation?

I want to move with the idea of working and having a family there so i would be very thankful if you can give me your advice.

Looking to relocate to Poland from the US.

Little on my background:

Left my country (I won't reveal it, sorry) to live in the US since the age of 12, I am 21 now, I don't feel like staying here as I don't seem to like life here in general both financial, educational, might as well add social. It is true there were good things here, but in the long run, I would be better off somewhere else.

What pushed me to look into leaving this country was discovring the stupidity of worldwide income tax that I won't escape as a US citizen or a permanent resident, food that is being questioned regarding if it is organic or no, how far I would be living from my income in the US, how far will the country turn out like in the long run.

I went to look for a country which would be better in terms of life quality and grants citizenship, and Poland turned out to be the best choice based on what I have been reading such as how far Polish people are returning willingly due to the improvments in the quality of life which is to be honest the greatest sign of how a country is doing well.

Now:

I am still a college student but I am looking to relocate after graduation, I have heard what the Polish government does to foreigners especially from friends from my country, but they all said the government does nothing as long as you act within the law, all of them are happy in the country, never heard a single complain and minorities have no issues there.

I know that despite the good things about Poland, there are still downsides, it doesn't mean that people live like rich people, and compared to all of Europe, Poland is the most stable, has low taxes, has good life quality and good education.

  • How is the job market for foreigners even with weak Polish language skills? I just started learning but I am doing well, still not in big conversations.
  • How is the job market for those who are public health graduates?
  • How is naturalization? (Ignore the language and the residency period as the difficulty) I heard it takes 7 years to naturalize. 5 to become a permanent resident, naturalize after maintaining permanent residency for 3 years.
  • How is education for foreigners both public school and university?
  • How would healthcare work for foreigners?
  • What are the pros and cons when it comes to life in Poland?
  • Anything more I should know?

Moving to Poland for love – experiences with finding a job & learning Polish? 🇵🇱❤️

Hi everyone!
I’d love to hear from people who have moved to Poland for their partner and what their experience has been like.
I’m Austrian and my boyfriend is Polish. He has been living and working here in Austria for the past **4 years**. We’ve visited Poland together many times, so I already know the country and really like it.
However, he misses his family and his home in Poland more and more. Because of that, I’ve been thinking that I’d be willing to **give Poland a try for him** at some point. Of course, I know that I would also miss my own family and my life in Austria, so it would be a big decision for both of us.
I’d especially love to hear from people who have been in a similar situation:
Did you move to Poland for love?

Were you able to find a job where **English and/or German** was enough?

Did you move there **without speaking Polish**?

How difficult was it to find a job and build a social life without knowing Polish?

Did you eventually learn Polish? If so, how long did it take before you felt comfortable using it in everyday life?

And most importantly: **Are you happy with your decision to move, or would you do things differently today?**
I’d especially love to hear from foreigners who moved to Poland for their partner and managed to build their own life there.
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! 😊

Questions about work/life Poland

Hi folks,

I'm an Indian, been in the UK for close to 3.5 years did my masters there and worked for a decent bank. I relocated to India late 2025, due to spending some time with family. Unfortunately my dad had a heart attack so he's no more and it's just me and mom. I work for a US Bank remotely in India but the issue is I moved back from the West to spend quality time with family, now that's reduced to 1 person only and indian society is judgemental. Being an Indian it feels bad as to why people judge everything and no one values the skills.

My line of work is credit risk strategy and modelling across IRB/IFRS9 and Basel 3 frameworks and driving portfolio growth and reducing losses.

Anyways, I've been trying to secure a job in Poland targeting close to 14/15k PLN month gross so I can start my life fresh there. I've travelled to Western Europe and it doesn't feel safe with ☪️ refugees, hence poland is appealing to me as I can contribute and feel safe.

A snippet of my CV, open to suggestions and guidance, all I want to do is get a decent work, have a quality work life balance and enjoy clean air with fresh water. Polish is tough it's going to take 2-3 years for me to reach B1, I'm up for the challenge. Also it's the right time as the Polish economy is on the boom. Thanks in Advance !!

Why does Poland spend so little on R&D and science in general?

There must come a time when Poland will need to innovate because in my opinion the current economic model won't last forever. Poland should strive to become world-class in a lot of scientific fields, but that won't happen if the government is penny-pinching.

Looking for where my family used to live?

Hey everyone I was told to post this question in this sub reddit about trying to find where my family used to live which is now modern day Poland. My family used to own a farm between 1892-1945. The farm was in a place called Groß Schönbrück which today is the village of Szembruk near Grudziadz. I was hoping anyone could tell me who I need to contact to find out this information. Whether that might be churches or government offices etc.

Venezuelan looking for info about migrating to Poland to study

Hi, im Venezuelan and i recently absolutely fell in love with the country, it might seem weird for some but I feel like we share so many similarities and ive found that out of most of Europe, polish people always seem to be more friendly/warm than other countries in the region (at least in my experience)

I've been fantasizing a lot about going to Poland to study, specifically Graphic Design or just overall Design or arts degree, how realistic would that be? Are there options for scholarships for my situation?

Things have only gotten tougher and tougher in my country and I've been thinking lately about where I'd like to go.

As context, I'm 24 yrs old, I studied graphic design here and ive worked as a graphic designer for 5 years at this point, id love to learn the language as i really really do love the culture and enjoy learning. Im not sure if it would be like a lifetime stay, as i still hold onto hope that my country will get better at some point, but id love to at least experience what it's like to live there for some time and study/work.

Any advice?
