Books set in Poland/written by Polish authors?

Hello, first of all sorry if this isn't your usual type of posts but I figured who better to ask than the Polish sub itself.

I'll be visiting Poland soon and I'd like to read some literature to really get in the mood. As I'm practically a noob when it comes to Polish authors or even books set in Poland, I'd appreciate some recommendations.

So far the only book I read that's set in Poland was *The Tin Drum* by Gunter Grass (I have mixed feelings about the book as I hated the protagonist, but I definitely want to visit Gdansk because of it).

Some of my preferences:

-preferably female authors (not obligatory, but I do try to read more books written by women)

-I enjoy historical fiction and magical realism

-I dislike books where nothing ever happens, and I prefer an interesting plot to just psilosophising

-I enjoy mysteries/books with eerie atmosphere

They can be new or old, ideally from the 20th century or more recent, but everything works really.

Thanks you immensely in advance!

Final verdict on Missha perfect Cover No. 13? (skin with redness/sebderm)

Hello, so I'm in a bit of a hurry to find THE BB cream as I have an important event coming in a few weeks that I want to look nice for. I was on the verge of ordering Missha perfect cover no13 but then saw the pics/read some more reviews and some people say that it is to orange for them! I did Swatch no 21 from Missha and that one was way too dark for me, so I worry that even 13 won't be light enough. I have cool undertones and a lot of redness in my skin, so idk how well this would work on me considering the gray cast it's notorious for. It's also very important to me that it doesn't split or get blotchy after a few hours, since all BB creams I've used tend to do that. ☹️

I live in a city with basically no shops so I need to order online and I don't have the option to test the shade. 🫠

Dealing with Erasmus depression when you've got nothing to come home to

Hello, so this title is actually a bit misleading since I'm only about to go on my Erasmus. But I've already spent the last half of the year planning, organising, telling all my friends I'm looking forward to it , and now that it's getting close I have this awful fear of what I'm gonna do once it's over.

I already had to make my stay shorter than planned because of visa regulations, and considering that my home situation is getting worse by day and my daily life is so mundane, I'm scared of what I'll be coming back home to. All of my close friends are currently in the process of moving abroad for good, so I won't even have them for support once I come back. I'm currently finishing my Master's degree in my hometown, and the program is so dull and uninspiring and I signed up for it just to please my parents. I just feel like this Erasmus will be a one-time-spark in my life and that I'll just come back home to depression and not even something to look forward to. I really dislike my hometown even now and having compared it to living abroad, it'll probably be even worse. :/

So, for those who didn't have friends back home or an amazing family to come back to - how did you do it? Ideally I'd like to keep traveling and hopefully do something similar to Erasmus in the future, but it takes working a job I dislike and being stuck with my family for a while in order to get the money to travel...

Thank you in advance kind people 🫶🏻

P.S. I'm already a member of my local ESN group, it was amazing in the beginning and really made me want to go on Erasmus. But now it's gotten to the point where it's all about gossipping and competing for foreign students attention, so ESN just doesn't do it for me.

Leaving Erasmus a week earlier, am I screwed?

I'm planning to go on Erasmus to Germany for an internship and I might need to cut my trip short because of visa regulations (my last day of the internship if also my last allowed day in Schengen, so if my flight gets cancelled for another day, I'm screwed).

The thing is, I have already changed my Learning agreement dates and acceptance letter with the German company TWICE because I had to change dates due to personal reasons. The first two times around they were full of understating, but I'm terrified of asking them THE THIRD TIME to change my dates again 💔 idk if I should just wait until I'm actually there to explain the situation and not stir the pot by writing another email. I'm aware it's entirely my fault for not being more cautious and not having thought everything through before confirming the dates. I'm also worried if this will affect my future Erasmus applications and if they'll flag me as an irresponsible candidate...

Schengen overstay by one day due to a cancelled flight, is it worth risking it?

Hi, so I'm about to travel to Poland and my supposed departure date is also the last day of my allowed stay in the Schengen zone (I'm staying visa free in Poland as my stay is under 90 days). However, I'm flying with LOT and that company is notorious for cancelling flights (they have already cancelled my 2PM flight and rebooked me for a 9AM one for the same day). So, now I'm paranoid that they might cancel the remaining flights for that day as well and I wonder if I should play it safe and rebook a more expensive flight for a couple days earlier, just so I don't risk Schengen overstay.

If my flight was to be cancelled/if there was a strike or another situation out of my control that caused my Schengen overstay, would I have any chance of avoiding pentalties or even a total Schengen entry ban? I'm terrified of forever having that "stain" of having overstayed in Schengen on my traveling portfolio.

Career redirection as a failed linguist - what are my options?

Hi, I have a MA in English Lit (not my first language) and I'm slowly starting to realize that I chose a major with one of the fewest career opportunities. So far it seems like my only job options are either being a teacher, working for a publisher for a couple dollars or working in customer service. I really dislike teaching and especially the fact that as a teacher working with little kids, you're expected to blow their noses, help them to the toilet etc. while also teaching them English. It's really humiliating and I don't want to compensate for the fact that most schools don't have enough professional caregivers so they have to use teachers instead. I also live in a country where state schools are controlled by the govt to the point that you may risk losing your teaching licence if you don't obey the directive (and don't even get me started on parents threatening me and my colleagues having crab mentality about anyone who tries to leave the profession...).

Translation honestly sounds interesting but I'm deeply concerned about the future of it with the frenzy regarding generative AI (whose harmful effects I won't even begin to get into here), as well as the fact that translation, unless you're a professional, is a generally very low-paying job. That's still an option for me but I'd like to also gain some skills in something more secure first.

And I don't want to risk everything in the hopes of maybe getting into academia work and being accepted to work at an university, which is what a lot of Lit majors are competing for.

Right now I'm trying to see which career (doesn't have to be strictly related to linguistics) I could sort of redirect to while also hopefully staying in the humanities field (I can't do IT to save my a##). Mainly I'd like to expand my options on the international market for aforementioned reasons, so a career that would serve that goal would be great.

Thank you immensely for any advice/shared experience!

I don't listen to enough music - can you recommend me some new artists based on my taste?

Hello, my friends in general tend to "shame" me for not listening to enough music because I really don't listen to many popular artists/bands. I guess my problem is that I tend to focus on the lyrics a lot and I need to look up the lyrics before I listen to a song and that's very time-consuming; also, I can't listen to music that's depressing or that's too superficial (has barely any lyrics) and a lot of music seems to be either or both. To give you an idea, I like songs that are upbeat and lively (NOT suicidal and depressing), and/or subtly sexy, but also have clever lyrics that's aren't too philosophical (basically I like Arctic Monkeys).

Some of music that I do like: Arctic Monkeys, ABBA, MIKA, the Beatles, Lorde (Melodrama album) David Bowie (mostly his Ziggy Stardust album), Leonard Cohen (his first two albums; the later ones are too depressing for me), Noah and the Whale, Olivia Rodrigo (yes I do love me some white girl music).

I also enjoy a few songs from 1960s boy bands like the turtles, as well as some 1950s Rock'n'Roll. I do enjoy a good power ballad as well (Winds of Change by the Scorpions is one of my faves).

I guess my genres would be mainly rock/pop rock. I dislike rap, techno, heavy metal or anything that's too hard on the ears, and country.

Also, I'd prefer recommendations for bands/artists that are still touring, because I'd really like to go to a concert some day and experience that feeling, but most of the bands I like aren't touring anymore or are dead 😭

Hair dried out from dying it - is there still hope?

Hi, I've been dying my hair ginger for about 2,5 years now (before that I had virgin hair and since my hair was naturally light it didn't require bleaching). However, I notice that my hair is very dry to the point my friend was shocked when she touched it (I was so jelly of her glossy virgin hair lol). To complicate the issue, I have seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp and occasionally need to use anti-sebderm shampoos that seem to dry out my hair further. I apply argan oil several times a week but it does nothing. I have tried a coconut oil conditioner (putting coconut oil for a few hours , then washing as normal) but it's SO hard to wash it out and I just end up applying more shampoo and scrubbing so vigorously to get the oil out, that it negates any nourishing that coconut oil might do 😭. I do blow dry my hair, esp in the winter/autumn (I live in a cold country and am prone to colds so air drying in winter is just a no-no). I have tried some "fancier" conditioners and even they don't seem to work on me; my mother who's been bleaching her hair blonde for 20 years has better hair than me and all those products seem to be working on her hair whereas mine just stays dull and lifeless. To be honest, I think my hair was dull even before dying it (tbh I never put any special care into it - embarrassing) but dying just made it worse.

I get my hair colored at a salon (never dyed it myself) where they usually use olaplex, & my hair feels nice when I leave the salon, but as soon as I wash it myself it goes back to being dull. I'm open to paying for a deep conditioning/hydrating treatment at a salon if it will really work long term.

P.S. I intend to keep dying my hair as it's some wonders for my confidence, I just want to minimize the damage done by dying it 😭

Cracking sound at the back of the head/head pounding when doing physical exercise

Hi, I know this sounds scary, but I've had these issues pretty much since childhood so I never gave it any special thought. The thing is, whenever I don't move my head for a while and move it again, I get a weird "cracking" sound (it's usually not very loud and I think others can't hear it), it's in the back of my head. It's not the usual joint cracking sound you get when you stretch your neck, legs or arms, but rather it feels like it's inside the head. This isn't usually related to headaches.

Secondly, whenever I do hard physical exercise like jumping, running, or even walking too fast, I feel like my head is pounding inside (like I have a heart pounding inside of my head xD). That's why I'm mostly scared to jump or run for prolonged periods and why I had to quit the gym (esp. jumping jacks 😫).

Should I be worried? I reckon it might be related to high blood pressure, even though my blood pressure was normal when I measured it, but then again maybe I should measure right after doing physical exercise.

Experiences similar to Erasmus available for non students?

Hello, I've recently gotten my Masters degree and have decided that I want to put the academic life on hold for a while before I really decide what I want to do with my life. During my studies I had the opportunity to do an Erasmus funded internship abroad, but it makes me a bit sad that these opportunities (at least for Erasmus) are mostly only available to students. So I'm curious, are there organisations similar to Erasmus (or even within Erasmus) that over non-students a possibility to work/volunteer/do projects abroad? I'm undecided about what I want to do with my life and feel like it would greatly help me to move away from my country for a while and get some international experience, especially since it might also look nice on a CV when I start looking for jobs or continue my education.

I know about AIESEC but have heard too many horror stories about them (might just be the people I know), and European Solidarity Corps as well, but I'd like some more recommendations about more "career oriented" possibilities that also help you to gain new skills.

Essentially I'm looking for work, but while also gaining international experience and possibly while having a guarantee that the companies are verified (because just applying for jobs in a different country on LinkedIn seems scary). I'm in Humanities but am also open to working in other fields if it requires no special university training.

P.S. I'm based in Europe but am also open to possibilities that aren't limited to Europe.

Question about memery shoes

Hi, I'm sorry if this isn't related strictly to historical costuming, but I reckon that some people on this sub will have had experience with Memery shoes. I'm currently ogling their Esther Suede Pumps (pictured below), and it would help me if anyone could tell me if their sizes are normally narrower/wider than regular shoes. I have a narrow foot and never order the wider size when I shop for shoes, but reading some reviews it got me thinking that Esthers in particular are narrower in size and that I should size up :(( to be specific I'm EU size 39 and my foot is around 9cm wide (I'm sorry if that's TMI lol).

Thank you immensely in advance!

PhD or a second Masters Degree when you've messed up your career choice?

Hi, I'm 24 and I'm currently doing my Masters degree in English Lit, after having finished a BA in the same field. I signed up for it because of family pressure and the fact that I felt like the only thing I was good at is languages and writing, but I am now figuring out that the only viable career options for me are either a) be a school teacher (which I really dislike) b) be an university professor (which is highly competitive and even if I succeed, idk if I would even like it). My parents are academics with very high expectations and are pressuring me to do a PhD right after my Masters, "while the professors still remember me" so that I can secure a job at the university later.

But truth be told, I live in a small town which I hate and am just trying to get out of here, and would definitely not want to do a PhD or work at an university here for the rest of my life. The truth is, I don't know if I even want to build a career in English Lit (the job market is oversaturated, and most of them are teachers). I'm toying with the idea if doing a second Masters in a different country and a completely different field, but I must admit, that kinda sounds like a waste of money and time. I do love academia though and would probably like to do a PhD somewhere down the road, but that would also probably be in a field that isn't English Lit. I'd also love to get some international experience as I don't necessarily want to limit myself to my country.

The thing is, doing my BA and Masters (so far) has really been easy and, since my university isn't very highly rated or good, I really didn't study all that much. I feel like I didn't get the "true" university experience where you actually learn a lot of things and that I somehow got away too easy, and a part of me wants to take an opportunity to gain some actual knowledge at a better university.

My dilemma is, should I try to get some more work experience (I already worked as a teacher for 1,5 years & have an internship coming) before I settle on a viable PhD/Master's degree? Because my parents claim that any time spent not chasing my academic goals is a waste of time and that it'll only get harder with age. But I genuinely have no idea if I made the right choice with my career and want to find out what I want before I start another degree.
