Ahh the joys of being a leader of a band…a venting post

My singer, as good of a guy as he can be, isn’t the type of guy to assert himself.

We’ve been together for almost a year and when we started, I made it clear to him that if we have problems with bandmates or with me, while I’m open to him or others venting to me, if it becomes problematic and it continues, I will move to have it on the floor and addressed.

For the first time in this band, we had a bad practice session. Things didn’t sound right, we couldn’t get the sound tweaked in, and while we were tracking a new tune, the guitarist got frustrated and got kinda snappy with the singer for not understanding what he wanted. He is introverted and a closed book. He’s also still grieving over his dad’s passing a few months ago. My singer deals with his own mental hang up, as we all do, but for me, I don’t let it deter me from doing what we need to do.

Singer stepped away which I commended him for and he vented to me and I thought I had diffused the situation until he was posting about his issues with him in social media. Had to put on my leadership at and told him to remove that post and that’s not what we do. He apologized and removed it. He didn’t think anyone would see it. I was patient yet assertive. I told him i understood how he felt but I told him that I expect opennesss and honesty from all of them and myself. That were not going to do this. Signer said he’s going to detach and distance himself from the guitar player to make it work.

I told him I can’t stop him and to do what he feels is best for now to cool things off. But I made myself clear that if this becomes problematic and causes unnecessary tension and friction, I’m going to step in address this and discuss this between those two and I will moderate. He refuses.

So now because of one bad day for the first time in this band. his whole perception of the guitarist changed. I don’t see him in the light that he does. And honestly, I don’t think the guitarist is even aware that the singer is upset with him.

Our guitarist is out of town for two weeks. While I hope things cool off, I’ve made myself clear. He can say he’ll separate himself from him to make it work like his last band, but I’m ready to make a change and cut him loose if I have to.

Being the leader comes with responsibility, I can understand and be empathetic towards everyone’s personal hang ups and such, but I won’t let it destroy what we’ve built so far. I won’t nuke it.

I’m grateful to our singer and his contributions, but I’m not going to have hidden grudges and resentments. If he refuses to work this out with the guitarist simply cause we had the first bad band practice since its inception, then I may have to replace him. I have no issues with the guitarist and I know how to deal with his personality. But in a band, people need to be open and honest about problems and issues with others and myself. I’ve been in too many bands where pent up resentments results in unnecessary blow outs or friction. Yeah it’s a band sure but I have a vision and I intend to see it through. If you refuse to work it out with the person you have issues with, then this band isn’t for you.

Band

I’m 18m in the midst of learning bass and I’m somewhat okay with vocals but I would love to make a bank with genres like pop, indie alternative 4-5 people max between 17-20 and it doesn’t have to be a everyday thing let’s all just make music and enjoy it and test out the waters. Roles for vocals drums and guitar are open feel free to reach out gender and all that other stuff doesn’t matter 😎

Any band directors or does anyone know band directors who need a job?

Hi, I know this is probably not the best place to put this but I’m desperate. I go to Pensacola High School and our band director just said that he has to quit due to personal reasons. He is leaving the school on Friday next week and the position was only recently posted. I, myself, and others want the band to have a full season with as little issues as possible, but without a band director after next week that will be difficult. Especially now finding a band director will be difficult due to the school year already starting so fewer people will be looking for the job.

So anyway my question for all of you is that if you yourself or someone you know is a band director please consider applying to be one at Pensacola High School, all of the students would greatly appreciate it.

If you have any questions I’ll try to anwser them, thank you all.

Band needs guitarist PAID GIG

Since nobody will do it for the passion anymore. I'll pay someone 10$ a month (or 5$ a song) to chug and play over some tracks and actually be a part of the band. Serious inquiries only, must use discord for communication and paypal or cashap for payment.

Thanks https://youtube.com/@hardmuzik23?si=bxy1ugiy2ULqEhEb

I need opinions

Hey so im the leader, vocalist and guitarist for my band and need some opinions on some band troubles. My bassist wants to sing a song and his voice is alright but my concern lies on whether or not its stepping on toes especially considering certain aspects with the bassist. He doesn't really contribute much other than playing the bass in the band. We have to pick him up and drop him off any time we go anywhere because he doesn't have a car and doesn't want to learn how to drive as well as doesn't help pay for anything like helping gas or merch because he doesn't have a job. He still takes a portion of the gig money and the rest goes toward funding the band. I feel like it's becoming a bit of a hassle to work with but im not sure if its just my ego being out of whack or not.

Edit: Thanks everybody for helping me out with this! I wanted an outside perspective before bringing anything up with the rest of the guys so I could have a fair unbiased conclusion and decision. He'll be singing the song and ill have a separate conversation about the other concerns one on one with him

Why Marching Arts Need Unionizing not Competing or Complying.

MAASIN is a group in the marching arts that wants to make DCI and BOA diverse and inclusive, even though both monopolies, which are 501 (c) (3) s, will never do so out of profit. It's akin to Big Bird walking into a KFC and applying for work, only to find out they are killing chickens on a massive scale at a factory farm. DCI and BOA are the factory farms of the performing and marching arts, with a record for hiding abuse, assault, and neglect of well-being under the rug, all for the goal of transforming students into traumatized people who will never pursue music as a study or play music for their own enjoyment. No Music Teacher or Educator should invest in DCI or BOA stock or charity because if you do, blood is on your hands of music students who are abused for the profit of a band director wanting to win. The Cadets have not folded; they are now the 1934 Foundation, which is also a 501 (c) (3) organization carrying on the same goals George Hopkins wanted in the Cadets.

Public Schools need to be fully committed to the full abolishment of DCI and BOA organizations from public school property and in bandrooms to protect music students and fight the for-profit cult of Drum Corps International and Bands of America. Band directors who are affiliated with such groups need to be held accountable in mass public school trials to end their abuse, hazing, grooming, and assault of children as young as 10-13. No auditions for DCI corps in public schools. And protests at NAMM and other music expos must make people aware of how corrupt DCI and BOA are for pubic schools and how they pay no taxes to keep abusing students for a trophy. Without DCI or BOA, school music programs can flourish, accommodate, focus on well-being, and be creative without having to compete or worry about winners or losers. They will force bands to cooperate with local charities and programs that need help, and give money back to smaller music dealers who need to sell their instruments to schools anyway.

Seeking Guitarist for Newly Formed Band (Spring Branch)

We are a fledgling band, looking for the right people to start something from the ground up.

We have rehearsal space in the Spring Branch area of Houston, Texas. We would like to accomplish the following:

  • First and foremost, have fun playing with like-minded individuals
  • Rehearse weekly
  • Work toward performing live every 1 to 2 months
  • Be open to learning and covering songs suggested by each member and potentially playing original songs written collectively. In other words, we will try to learn the songs you want to play if you also try to learn the songs we want to play, so long as no one absolutely hates the song and it is within our abilities.

Beyond that we are flexible. We currently do not have a concrete style, genre, or setlist, but are gravitating toward 90's and 2000's era rock, grunge, and alternative.

For more information, including examples of our work, see the link below:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XGmpb2v-mI73SnBN8H_MBxVjnAQbNyjLTEN8OAVz1Bs/edit?usp=sharing

We invite all to apply.

Our ideal lineup would include rhythm guitar, lead guitar, and possibly a keyboard. If you can do double duty, such as rhythm guitar and keyboard, even better. Can you sing backup? Awesome! You can't, also fine.

Please try to be descriptive in your reply. If you have any, please include examples of your playing. Here are some traits we would like to see:

  • Stable and dependable
  • No hard drug users
  • Well maintained music gear

Lastly, we are respectful and tolerant of those who show respect and tolerance. If you have extremely polarizing political views, please seek elsewhere.

Does anyone know how to make your first ever band? I really need some advice.

For context, I have been making music for at least two years now, and 6 years of experience with the violin. The only problem is that I am NOT popular at my school. Nor do people enjoy my company. It's simply homophobia, I think.

Trying to start a band but it’s a mess

So I’ve been trying to start a band for the last couple years and it‘s been all over the place. I had 3 friends in mind-a drummer, guitarist, and bassist. (I’m a guitarist). What I wanted was to play progressive instrumental music and both me and the other guitarist are both proficient players. We both know theory and it’s really easy for us to communicate ideas with each other. The drummer is mostly a heavy metal drummer, and it works good with what we do. The bassist I had in mind didn‘t join. The first few jams were awesome, we were firing off ideas left and right and making good progress. But after a while the guitarist started being inconsistent and not answering texts. And my drummer keeps inviting new people to play bass but most of them don’t know notes and just don’t know what’s going on. And now my drummer thinks we should get rid of the other guitarist, but honestly without him what I had envisioned just wouldn‘t work. The last few jams have just been me and the drummer and it‘s difficult for me to write music like that because I can’t play rhythm and lead without looping stuff so it’s hard to tell what works. I just needed to rant for a minute lol

We’re researching the biggest challenges musicians face finding collaborators. We’d love your input!

Hey everyone!
My friend and I are researching the biggest challenges musicians face when trying to find bandmates, collaborators, and people to create music with. Before we build anything, we want to make sure we’re solving real problems—not just making assumptions.
If you’re a musician (whether you’re a beginner, hobbyist, or professional), we’d really appreciate it if you could spare 3–5 minutes to fill out our survey.
Your feedback will directly influence what we build, and we’d love to hear about your experiences—good or bad.

Thanks so much for your time, and if you have thoughts beyond the survey, we’d love to hear them in the comments!
