Ahh the joys of being a leader of a band…a venting post

My singer, as good of a guy as he can be, isn’t the type of guy to assert himself.

We’ve been together for almost a year and when we started, I made it clear to him that if we have problems with bandmates or with me, while I’m open to him or others venting to me, if it becomes problematic and it continues, I will move to have it on the floor and addressed.

For the first time in this band, we had a bad practice session. Things didn’t sound right, we couldn’t get the sound tweaked in, and while we were tracking a new tune, the guitarist got frustrated and got kinda snappy with the singer for not understanding what he wanted. He is introverted and a closed book. He’s also still grieving over his dad’s passing a few months ago. My singer deals with his own mental hang up, as we all do, but for me, I don’t let it deter me from doing what we need to do.

Singer stepped away which I commended him for and he vented to me and I thought I had diffused the situation until he was posting about his issues with him in social media. Had to put on my leadership at and told him to remove that post and that’s not what we do. He apologized and removed it. He didn’t think anyone would see it. I was patient yet assertive. I told him i understood how he felt but I told him that I expect opennesss and honesty from all of them and myself. That were not going to do this. Signer said he’s going to detach and distance himself from the guitar player to make it work.

I told him I can’t stop him and to do what he feels is best for now to cool things off. But I made myself clear that if this becomes problematic and causes unnecessary tension and friction, I’m going to step in address this and discuss this between those two and I will moderate. He refuses.

So now because of one bad day for the first time in this band. his whole perception of the guitarist changed. I don’t see him in the light that he does. And honestly, I don’t think the guitarist is even aware that the singer is upset with him.

Our guitarist is out of town for two weeks. While I hope things cool off, I’ve made myself clear. He can say he’ll separate himself from him to make it work like his last band, but I’m ready to make a change and cut him loose if I have to.

Being the leader comes with responsibility, I can understand and be empathetic towards everyone’s personal hang ups and such, but I won’t let it destroy what we’ve built so far. I won’t nuke it.

I’m grateful to our singer and his contributions, but I’m not going to have hidden grudges and resentments. If he refuses to work this out with the guitarist simply cause we had the first bad band practice since its inception, then I may have to replace him. I have no issues with the guitarist and I know how to deal with his personality. But in a band, people need to be open and honest about problems and issues with others and myself. I’ve been in too many bands where pent up resentments results in unnecessary blow outs or friction. Yeah it’s a band sure but I have a vision and I intend to see it through. If you refuse to work it out with the person you have issues with, then this band isn’t for you.

Would having an in house kit attract a drummer?

Everyone’s been through it. Finding a good drummer sometimes can be like finding a Unicorn.

We’ve been searching for a drummer for a while now with really no luck. We’ve been discussing possibly buying either cheap e kit or a beater kit to see if that might entice someone a little more since they wouldn’t have to haul all their kit except maybe some hardware to a first audition.

Thoughts ?

Should finding a drummer be a team effort ?

So my band has been together almost a year, we still don’t have a drummer, we had three flake outs and a guy who just wasn’t going to work. We have been writing, recording and practicing to drum tracks during all this time though.

I feel Ive been doing alot of the legwork to recruit one (social media, flyers, gigs, open mics, etc) and it feels like my bandmates aren’t putting in the effort like I am.

A couple of guys in the band aren’t big on the social media thing and don’t use it much or one of them is introverted.

Should I show a little assertiveness and encourage them to look as well ? I know finding a drummer for metal is like finding a unicorn. Just wondering if I speak up and it’s team effort, it might bolster our chances.

Playing live to drum tracks..

Any one else do this ? We all know a good drummer is like finding a unicorn …the four of us have been rehearsing and recording to drum tracks our other guitarist programs (he has experience in recording)

We’re having a heck of a time finding a drummer, so we’re accepting the fact that we may possibly will have to play live to drum tracks. It’s not ideal, but we want to play and make our music heard, and who knows ? Maybe we’ll attract a drummer ?

Any of you play live to drum tracks ? Just curious.

Why do people do this ?

Had a drummer message my band via facebook with real interest in playing with us.

We corresponded for a few weeks, sent him the songs to learn, and we set up a date to try out.

Reached out to him this week and it’s like he’s not reading our messages (it’s showing as sent, not seen)

I don’t know if something is happening in his personal life or if he simply changed his mind. Both are totally understandable and it would have been nice if he would have just said something come up to hey I’m not interested anymore and there’d be no hard feelings.

Probably should just move on I guess, huh ? 🤷‍♀️

Anthrax -The Grand- NYC 5/24/93

Day before SOWN was released. They did an instore at Tower Records after the show. First time I ever heard Frankie flub Got The Time and interesting hearing Bush when doing the intro to Room For One More saying it’s probably going to be the next single. Love Black Lodge but I kinda think Room was probably a better choice. Maybe some of you were in attendance here ?

Check out that dude’s channel ! Got lots of cool Anthrax stuff …even when they showed up to a fan’s house who won the Headbanger’s Ball contest.

Sound Of White Noise turns 33 today !

I know we’re all pumped for the new album, but SOWN will always be my favorite album from them ! Not a bad track from start to finish !

I know there’s some that don’t like it and only prefer Joey, and that’s okay. Happens anytime a popular lead signer gets replaced. I like Roth Van Halen over Van Hagar but I do dig 5150, so I get why people aren’t into it.

Saw the Bush lineup in 2003…such a killer show !!

Why is finding a drummer so difficult ??

For real ?!?! I’ve posted in numerous classified, Bandmix, Craigslist, attend gigs, and crazy how drummers are so difficult to locate. Sadly in my area there’s not a lot of open mics to attend.

Suggestions ? We already play to drum tracks our other guitarist programs. And, while we could realistically play live with them to tide us over, I personally prefer the swing and flow of a human drummer. 🤷‍♀️
