A Cool Guide to New Jersey's Hot Dog Styles

Happy National Hot Dog Month!

Over the past two years I worked up the NJ Hot Dog Index to catalog the different style of hot dogs available in the great state of New Jersey, along with representative examples of each.

There's 14 styles in the table including a number which are native to the area (Rippers; Texas Weiners; Hot Onions; Italian Hot Dogs; Easton Dogs) plus more.

Each example is laid out in the style of a periodic table with technical information about each dog (toppings, brand, etc.)

I was flashed - Hackensack - Johnson Park

Hi guys, it sucks I have to write this but I wanted to make people aware of what happened to me today.

Around 1 PM in Hackensack , Johnson park on the Hackensack river pathway, I was walking back from the FDU campus part of the park while I was on the phone with a friend.

I was at the part of the trail where you’re parallel to the building that has the holy name offices inside, as well as Bergen’s promise social work.

While there, I noticed a young man around 27-31 , light skin, black, with joggers on ( I want to say they were light ish colored), with a bucket hat on and a white muscle shirt. He had high cheekbones and some facial hair and his features strongly reminded me of the actor Lakeith Stanfield from Atlanta (obviously it wasn’t him but I want to give people a reference point), who came out of his car and walked straight onto the trail.

I tend to be a very cautious woman around men in public (thanks paranoid Puerto Rican mom) and I decided to walk along the parking lot, instead of walking along the trail.

I made my way further into the parking lot when I noticed that the young man I had seen earlier was standing there, looking through the tree with his penis out.

I started screaming because I didn’t know what to do and obviously there’s a stranger with his penis out. This guy was NOT peeing. He was looking straight ahead with his penis out and when he heard me screaming, he simply turned towards me and reached his hand out and said “wait.”

I continued to make a scene and booked it towards the soccer field, where some very kind bystanders were asking me if I was ok, and called the police for me.

A report was filed but I wanted to make people aware, ESPECIALLY because this is a park that so many children frequent.

Many times I see parents letting their kids ride their bikes ahead of them or run in front of them, and I would hate to have this man victimize a child or anyone else.

Please know that if you see a man fitting this description lingering around this park, to be cautious and know that he is not a safe person. Women, please be careful. I love this park I frequent it often, and have never had an issue. I’ve walked there alone, but knowing this man may come back has changed my relationship with a space that I used to enjoy going to.

I am so grateful for all the bystanders who helped me today and I am especially grateful for the 2 women who were able to corroborate this man’s appearance , and take pictures of his vehicle as he sped away.

Would driving into the city from Fort Lee every day be reasonable?

Been taking NJTransit for almost a year now and decided that I can't do it anymore. Hate dealing with other passengers and idiotic bus drivers who can't drive. Plus, I I really don't like taking public transportation as it always leave me feeling kind of grimy, so I'd much rather drive my Porsche if it's realistic.

Let's say I leave around 6:00 AM and traffic isn't much of a factor. My office is in Chelsea, right off the Westside Highway.. Would that be a pretty stress-free commute, or is driving into Manhattan every day still a headache even if you beat most of the rush?

Would love to hear from people who have actually done it.

Movie theaters with alternate programming

Hey ya’ll, are there any movie theaters in the area that show classics, foreign, or indie films? Basically the new stuff they’re playing at AMC doesn’t interest me and I’m looking to change it up without going all the way to manhattan. Thank you!

Does anyone remember the pediatrician, Dr Hands?

Did anyone else have Dr. Hands (Saddle River) growing up or have him for their kids? I would love to find a pediatrician like him. Old school, been around the block a time or two, personalized relationships with patients. Does this even exist anymore?

How do so many Korean businesses in Fort Lee and Palisades Park stay successful if they're mostly serving other Koreans?

When you walk around Fort Lee or Palisades Park, there are tons of Korean restaurants, bakeries, cafes, salons, grocery stores, karaoke spots, and other businesses. A lot of them have Korean-only signs or menus and it seems like they're primarily geared toward Korean customers. I was just in Pal Park earlier and couldn't help but notice that there was not a single sign in English and besides that one pizzeria on Broad Ave, pretty much all the businesses are catered to only Koreans.

From a business standpoint, doesn't that limit your potential customer base? Koreans are only a small percentage of Bergen County's overall population (and I think smaller than the Hispanic population), so I'd assume expanding beyond one community would make more financial sense.

Yet many of these places have been around for years and new ones keep opening. There are cafes and restaurants that have been there for over a decade, possibly even longer

Is the Korean population in this area just large and concentrated enough to support them? Or do a lot more non-Koreans visit these businesses than I realize?

Why does Bergen County feel so much less liberal than NYC?

Whenever I'm in across the river in Manhattan or Brooklyn, it feels like progressive politics are just the "default" Then I come back to Bergen County and the political vibe feels noticeably different. Not "deep red" or anything like that, because I know Bergen still votes Democratic, but people seem a lot more moderate, centrist, or just less politically outspoken in general. The thing that surprises me is how close the two are. You can literally cross the bridge or tunnel in 15–20 minutes and it feels like the political atmosphere changes pretty noticeably.

One example I've noticed is that NYC seems to have a much bigger LGBTQ+ presence, with Pride events, community spaces, and businesses openly catering to that community. In Bergen County, you don't really see that nearly as much. I'm sure those communities exist here too, but they just seem a lot less visible.

Is there some historical reason the county developed a different political culture despite being right next to NYC? It's no Sussex County but it's no NYC either (at least that's what it feels like)

Why is the Edgewater portion of the waterfront so hostile to pedestrians compared to Weehawken and West NY along the same road and geography ?

Around port imperial you get a lot of mixed use mid rises with businesses and decent viewing spots along the Hudson River while Edgewater has taller one use buildings and much wider roads and most disgustingly strip malls next to the river . You can’t even have a comfortable walk along the river up there, is so backwards. Is like the planners went “fuck you and your river views peasants” lol

Overpeck County Park 4th of July?

It’s gonna be my first time going to Overpeck County Park to see 4th of July fireworks. Just wanted to know a few things

What is the best time to get to the park? I was thinking arriving at 6:30.

How’s the traffic like around that area?

I was planning on parking at the garage in 349 Frank W Burr Blvd, anyone know how fast it fills up? How’s the traffic around that area when getting in?

My biggest concern is just the parking situation, so anyone have advice on that or possibly the best place to park?

Thank you and I hope to see you all there 🙏

Why are Hudson and Essex counties much more liberal and LGBT friendlier than Bergen

Yes, Bergen is split into two distinct parts of the county North and West being more rich suburban while south of rt 4 and 80 and near the Hudson more dense. But even densely populated areas like Rutherford, Garfield and a few more tend to be more conservative. For example , I don’t think Analia Mejia would have won in the districts covered by Gottheimer and Pou in Bergen

Hackensack hospital for L&D

Can anyone give their experience good or bad for Hackensack Hospital L&D if they had a baby there recently.

I had a horrible traumatic experience at pascack on Monday with nurses that had no idea what they were doing and I’m worried I’m going to encounter that again now because pascack is under Hackensack and it’s going to be a bad experience.

Thanks

Rock climbing at Gravity Vault on July 17?

Anyone interested in going rock climbing at Gravity Vault in Upper Saddle River on Friday, July 17?

They have a Friday happy hour where day passes are $14 after 5 PM.

I'm 37M and live in Nyack. I used to climb fairly regularly (around V3/V4 bouldering and 5.10–5.11 top rope), but it's been a while, so I'll probably be easing back in around V2 and 5.9.

I'm mostly looking to meet a few local people to climb with from time to time, so all experience levels are welcome.

If you're interested, leave a comment or send me a DM!

anyone work as a 1:1 aide at Washington School in Paramus for Bergen County Special Services?

The benefits seem great so wondering what the work day is like for a teacher assistant or 1:1 aide for autism program if anyone has worked any of those positions for the school. Is it a sustainable career or do you get burned out quickly? Thank you.
