I’m a 39M Chinese-American who left NYC for Berlin 15 years ago. I’m a city government landscape engineer divorced co-parent by day, and a non-monogamous responsible hedonist by night. Ask Me Anything!

I’ve hit the 15-year mark of living in Berlin after leaving New York back in 2011, and now looking back I could have never predicted how my life would have turned out. I’m a 39-year-old Chinese-American landscape engineer with the city's the parks department. For a while, I lived a pretty traditional life. I met my ex here and we were married monogamously for 7 years. After the divorce we've maintained a great relationship as co-parents. These days ENM is my preferred relationship dynamic (closer to solo-poly/relationship anarchy) and I enjoy Berlin's rave and alternative lifestyle scene (with moderation!). Some things you can ask me about:

  • What it’s like working for the Berlin government as an immigrant.
  • Transitioning from a 7-year monogamous marriage to the Berlin ENM scene.
  • Co-parenting abroad while maintaining an alternative lifestyle.
  • How Berlin has changed from 2011 to 2026.
  • NYC vs. Berlin/US vs Germany culture shocks, identity, or German visa struggles.

Anyone else has issues with cockroaches (Hausschaben)? It seems like our whole house is infested :/

Since about three weeks, they constantly appear in my apartment. All my neighbors have the same issue. I think they’re coming from the bathtub drain in my case. We saw them in the staircase and the bins in the backyard as well. It seems that they have thoroughly spread through the whole building. Does anyone have similar problems? What to do about them?

Should I sign an apartment contract with a Staffelmiete (automatic rent increase)?

Current warm rent: €990

Immediate increase: They want to raise the rent by €80 right off the bat before I move in.

Staffelmiete clause: The contract forces an automatic fixed rent increase every year on April 1st (e.g., the base rent goes up by over €41 after the first 12 months).

Should I be worried about this ? Aparment contract smth in it

I just read the contract and this is what is written about the mold “ Due to the high groundwater level in the area surrounding the rented property and numerous major construction sites in the city, the dampness of basements/cellar floors (Kellergeschossen) in Berlin represents the usual condition and is not a defect. Therefore, no valuable or moisture-sensitive items should be stored in the basement.”

The apartment in 3rd floor.

Looking for Friends

Hey, I’m M25 and looking to meet some new people in the city.

I recently finished my exams and a lot of my friends moved to Hamburg to study there, so I’m trying to meet some new people here in Berlin and get out of the house more instead of just staying at home.

I’m into football, gaming, anime/manga, tcgs, music and just exploring random places in Berlin (cafés, walks, events etc.).

Would be cool to meet chill people for:

- grabbing a coffee

- hanging out / walks

- gaming

- or just good conversations

I’m a bit quiet at first but open up quickly once I feel comfortable.

If you’re also looking to meet new people in Berlin, feel free to message :)

(Kann übrigens auch Deutsch)

Advice for finding a minijob?

Hey everyone,

I’m a student in my mid 20s living in Berlin, and honestly surviving on Bafög here is getting really tough. I’ve been trying hard to find a Minijob, but no matter how many applications I send out, I just can’t seem to land one. It’s starting to get pretty stressful since my bills are piling up and I really need an income soon.

Does anyone have tips, advice, or recommendations for agencies/services that help with finding something? Any leads would really mean a lot.

Oh yeah, I speak fluent German.

Urgent !! help me figure if an appointment has these issues.

I have to decide quickly on an apartment but I am not sure about two things

- sound isolation.

- mold problems.

I had a viewing couple of weeks ago, the apartment is great only two concerns that i mentioned, the tenant said they are no problems… but I don’t want to take their words because they could just say that to their favour.

I asked today for another viewing in the evening, please give me all the tips and tricks to figure it out… I am even thinking of nocking on the neighbour and ask if they have any sound isolation problems..she is an old german lady.

Why am I suspected these two problems?

The building is altbau build between 1890 and 1905, and the apartment is a studio apartment, so most likely a big apartment was divided, and in first viewing I knocked on wall between the two apartments and the wall felt hollow or empty, but when i was there for like 10 mins never heard any thing from any sides.

Other thing that I suspected is mold, not sure about that, but when i got in there was a smell, not bad but there is a smell that a bit strong, but can be the wood smell.. the apartment gets direct sun in the morning.

These two things are deal breaker for me, so I really have to make sure.

Please give tips and tricks for the viewing to figure if these two problems exist.

Is the “long walk first date” a German cultural thing?!

I matched with a German guy and the chat was actually great. We finally met and I was fully expecting the classic first date combo: coffee, maybe lunch, sit somewhere cozy and talk.

Nope.

This man took me on a TWO-HOUR WALK!!

Not a cute little stroll. An endurance test. We walked through streets, parks, side streets, probably crossed into another federal state at some point.

The whole time I kept thinking: ‘Surely we’re stopping somewhere now… right?
Wrong.

At one point my social battery died before my phone battery.

Like sir… I dressed for a date, not for a hiking expedition in the Alps 😭

And the funniest part? He genuinely seemed to think it was the perfect date!

Who actually is employed to clean Berlin? It seems F-Hain has been forgotten. I looked down at the tracks at Warschauer S-Bahn and it looked like a literal landfill! Why doesn't it get cleaned? Is it a money thing?

Conny Scam issue

Hello all,
Conny has threatened me to take legal action and charges for its service although I haven’t signed anything or send any documents, pics for rent reduction.

I got involved with them last year to reduce my rent. But after going through their term and condition I decided not to take their service. They kept sending me letters and emails to sign but I have ignored them till now as they are coming to me saying I have to pay for their service for whatever works they have done. Either I have to continue going for the law suit against the landlord for rent reduction or I have to pay them for whatever reasons.

Do any of you have any experience dealing with this kind of situation. I am not in a very good place financially right now. So would appreciate any advice to save me from the hassles.

Thank you 🙏

English Speaking Jobs in Berlin

Hi everyone, I’m currently looking for English-speaking part-time jobs in Berlin.

I have previous experience working in cafés, restaurants, and retail in my home country. So far, finding work has been quite difficult because many places require fluent German. I’m actively learning the language, but I’m not yet confident enough to communicate fluently in a work environment.

I wanted to ask if anyone here has been in a similar situation and might have advice, recommendations, or suggestions on where to look for English-speaking opportunities.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Looking for Rave Friends in Berlin

Hi, I’m 27 years old "M" and I’ve been living in Berlin for 3.5 years.

I love raving and usually go out alone. But lately, I’d like to make some rave friends and go together because most people usually come in groups, and that can make it harder to connect with others.

So if anyone is also looking for rave friends, we could explore different clubs together. Or maybe you could help me discover new clubs, and we can just have fun and enjoy the vibe.

Gender doesn’t matter to me. I’m simply looking for trustworthy people.

Also, I tend to stick to one club and keep going there all the time. For some reason, I feel like I’m “betraying” the club if I go somewhere else haha. Sounds a bit weird, I know, but of course I should explore more places and experience different clubs.

I’ve been to KitKat many times. I’ve also been to OXI around 5–6 times and a few other clubs too, but those were smaller places and quite a while ago, so I don’t remember their names anymore.

If you’d like to know more about me or ask anything, feel free to message me anytime. I’m usually available.

Thanks :)
