ASL 21 Finals Tickets

Hi all.

My partner absolutely adores StarCraft and by knowing FlaSh will be there we got our tickets to go to Seoul this weekend. We got tickets for the PlayX4 convention in advance. However we failed to get seats for the finals.

I have heard online that you can still go and stay standing near the end of the arena, according to the official statement:

  • Non-Ticket Holders: If you do not have a ticket, you will not be allowed to enter the designated ASL seating area. (However, standing viewing from outside the arena perimeter is permitted).

Is that confirmed? Any way we can still see the finals? Any tips?

A question I had regarding Tastosis

It seeped through their casting many times in the past and now it feels official to me that they enjoy broodwar so much more than SC2, which is of course fine but did they ever state a reason for that?

I remembered Artosis saying that he thinks SC2 is more balanced than Broodwar so it shouldn't be balancing. Is it just nostalgia/being invested in the one game for longer than the other or are there other advantages that I don't quite see?

[BSL] The difference in views between games with Artosis and without is a literal order of magnitude.

Kinda makes me feel BSL lacks starpower. Korean pros are also heavy streamers. I'm sure one hand washes the other, but I wonder if there's anything foreign BW players can do to increase their draw? Obviously, Artosis and his stream is exceptional in many ways, but the lack of views is disheartening.

I guess it doesn't help that BSL production values are significantly lower.

Noob Journal - A Return

I don't know if many of you remember me, but a couple years ago I started documenting my learning journey in Brood War including all of my terrible decision making and skills haha. A lot of you were really kind and helpful, and some people didn't like how often I posted which is understandable.

I have been on and off playing the game and recently I've finished my junior year of college, and with all of this free time on my hands I figured I'd pick the game back up and finally figure this game out.

I've been playing mostly Zerg at a low E rank level, and I've been really struggling with Terran Bio and Protoss after I defend the first push. I know my mechanics have a really long way to go, but I figured I'd post a replay here and see what you guys think are my most glaring problems. I really appreciate you guys!

Trying to watch old brood war - Where and how?

Hey there!

I watched a lot of SC2 basically from the start of it until now with some years off. I just played a bit of SC1 and have a grip on units and general strategy now, so I wanted to watch some brood war. I know of the whole history, Flash, Jaedong, savior, Bisu, NaDa, etc. but I don't know where to start, both from a time perspective as well as from a ressource perspective.

Are the old BW tournaments on youtube with english commentary? Is there a special channel I can visit and with which year/tournament should I start?

HAve you noticed how Flash seems to sit and look to the side while he's playing in ASL?

What kind of setup is he using? I have never seen any pro sit to the side like that...

Flash is not human...

He is god. We can not compare him to goats of other esports or sports. He is above everyone...

Often a question is asked if aliens invade you need to pick 3 humans to beat them in the selected sport or the earth is destroyed. But the aliens actually ask if Flash invades which 3 aliens will we pick to beat him?

This isn't normal...

Jaedong's mental

One of the things I love the most about BW is how much focus we as a community have developed around a good mindset and proper mental.

Out of all pro players, I feel like I connect with Jaedong the most, because it reminds me of how I felt when I came back after my first long break. I started playing WoL in 2010 and played it a lot for about 2 years and I developed a pretty strong mental and this "I can win any game" mindset like Jaedong talks about. But when I came back after my year-long break, it was like the units weren't the same. Obviously there were patches in SC2, but even more than so I was not as good. And that disconnect between "how good I am" in my head and in my hands was basically impossible to overcome for me. It used to be that if I had 20 supply and a good angle, my micro was simply good enough to defeat any opponent, and I'm sure you know the feeling yourself.

I wonder if Jaedong has a similar mental block (but more extreme of course), in that 2008-2011 he was the best, and could defeat anyone in a Bo5, creme of the crop, king of the hill, part of Taekbangleesang, untouchable. And now that he's back to BW, all these years later, he still sort of instinctively remember "my lings simply do more damage than the opponents lings" you know, but his hands can't simply do it anymore. He himself is used to thinking that "if I can sneak in 2 lings into the enemy base, I just win. I just win." or "if I get 1 control group of mutas, I just win. I just stop anything terran can throw at me." And now, while he is still a top 10 player in the world, he's not a top 2 player in the world, and his lings are not simply better than other players lings etc.

It's sort of a curse for those who have been at the very top, and then taken a break, and when they come back, for whatever reason, they just cannot get back to the very top.

These are the sorts of things I think about, and it's part of Brood War imo, and I love it. Obviously I'm a huge Jaedong fan, and I've talked about him as an inspiration to my friends plowing through university and at work and I just talk about him all the time lol.

What do you guys think?
