I stumbled across this book from another post recently that completely changed how I think about food.

We’re so used to fridges, supermarkets, and next day delivery that I honestly never stopped to think about how people actually ate before all that existed. This book is basically a collection of old recipes that were designed to last months or even years without refrigeration. The same kind of food our great grandparents (and great great grandparents) relied on.

What surprised me most wasn’t even the recipes, it was the mindset. Everything was about making food stretch, using what you had, and not relying on systems that could disappear overnight. Reading it made me realize how dependent we are now compared to even a couple generations ago.

I’ve tried a handful of the recipes so far. Some are definitely outside my normal rotation, but a few were genuinely good and oddly satisfying knowing they’d keep without power or fancy storage.

It’s less of a cookbook and more of a little history lesson disguised as one. Made me appreciate how resilient people used to be, especially when it came to food. I wanted to make this post as a bit of a shoutout to the creators for putting it together and the person who shared it here a couple months back (I couldn't find the old post to go back and comment).

Here's the website I bought the cookbook from, it's a pretty niche book so I don't think it's available on any mainstream platforms - survivalsuppers.com

Hole in the wall needs fixing

Hey everyone, I accidentally ended up with a hole in my drywall about the size of my palm and I'm trying to figure out the best way to deal with it.

Does anyone know how hard this is to fix myself and what materials/tools I'd need? Or rather, roughly how much it would cost if my landlord arranged the repair instead? I'm a student so I'm quite scared of how much it would cost me to pay him if I did let him know.

It's standard drywall/plasterboard and the hole goes through the wall. Any advice or estimates would really help. Thanks!

New to Colchester - beauty treatments advice

Hey Redditors,

I’m new to this town and I am looking for two services preferably if they were in Colchester town area:

- a lash technician that is decently priced and has good lash retention
- nail technician, one you can recommend or if they do gel-x nails that’s a bonus!

There is a ton around but I’m not sure which to go for

Also to add I would love to make new friends in this town I’m in my mid 20s and female. how would I go about doing this? I moved from London and all of my friends are from there. If there’s any events that are happening please let me know!

I love to cook at home, I play video games (solos mainly or sometimes Fortnite lol) and I am trying to be consistent with going to the gym!

Pubs with playgrounds near Colchester?

It looks like it's going to be a great weekend, which means beer garden weather.

Any suggestions for pubs with a playground with half decent food? I know the Swan near Stanway has something but the foods not great, any other suggestions?

Moving to Essex

I’m an Indian currently living in Oxford, and I’ve gotten a job offer from a company in Clacton-on-sea. I was planning to living somewhere nearby like Colchester or Chelmsford but everyone’s been advising me against Essex and I feel like i’m stuck between the safety I feel in Oxford and a job I really like. Any advice?

Gay men in Colchester who like Hiking

Just wondered if there were any gay groups for single men who like hiking within the Colchester area?

Have tried Outdoorlads but didn't like the people.

There is not much for gay men in this area and travelling to London is not always practical.

Board game and puzzles

I'm queer afab, in my late 20s, and I love dice and a slice but I don't really have any friends nearby to go with, or people to hang out and do puzzles with. I have tried going to the queer nights but my anxiety was too high, I got overwhelmed because I didn't know anyone there and I ended up having to leave

So I don't suppose there is anyone in Colchester that might be interested in getting together to play some time?

Opinions on student housing near the University of Essex

I’ll be starting my master’s at the University of Essex this October, and I’m currently looking at a few housing options. I’m interested in a studio or 1-bedroom apartment in a quieter area. Right now, I’m considering The Maltings, Elmstead Place, and Hythe Mills.

I live in Canada so I unfortunately won’t be able to visit in person before signing a lease, so I was hoping you could help answer a few questions:

What are the buildings like overall?

What is the general student mix like (undergraduates vs. postgraduates)?

Are any of these considered party buildings that I should avoid?

Would it be possible to walk to the university from these locations and how close are grocery stores and other essentials?

how responsive is maintenance when issues come up? Are the walls fairly soundproof?

I'd really appreciate any insight or advice. Thanks so much!

Can anyone remember the name of the chip chop on Military Road that was next to J Green Lettings?

Could be a long shot, but I don't know unless I try.

My dad used to live on Military Road from (I think) the late 90's to the mid 00's, and I've been recently reminiscing about places I knew of from that time. I recently found out that The Twist had closed which is a shame, however I remember there being a chip shop practically next to J Green Lettings, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called then. My dad and the owner got along famously, and he used to love seeing me and my sisters on there. If anyone can remember what it was called at that time (maybe from 1999-2004 I'd say) I'd be very grateful.
