Deer Fence Options

We live on a golf course and am not allowed to completely fence our yard with a fence to keep deer out. My wife’s a super keen gardner and the deer are eating her plants, of course. She sprays them with Bobex frequently and it helps - a little. Has anyone had any luck with temporary fencing to keep the critters out? There is an area where we could stretch a netting between the corner of our house and the relatively robust hedge we have. I know they can probably push through the hedge but, like a rat exterminator said to us at our previous home: “I can’t make your house rat proof, but I can make it more rat proof than your neighbours!”

real estate litigation lawyer in Comox Valley?

Hi, I am looking for a lawyer that can advocate for me in a complex property dispute in the Comox Valley area. Not a real estate solicitor that specializes in straight forward paperwork, or a litigation lawyer who is not familiar with property law nuances. Is there anyone or a firm who can do both that someone can recommend? A review from someone who had a complex property dispute and received skilled representation would be so appreciated. Thanks!

Costco does pet prescriptions here!

I just called to confirm at the Courtenay location. You need to go in to do the initial registration, but then simply get your prescription written by your Vet and bring it to Costco to save a ridiculous amount.

Looking for advice as UK citizen

Hello all! I’m sure if this is the right place to be messaging but I was looking for advice on moving to comox valley as a uk citizen? I’ve got my WHV and need to come before may next year, I was hoping to get some help in terms of jobs and work. Besides from looking on indeed and Canadian job bank, what else would be a good way to look for work? I’m a barber, willing to do manual labour, vine yard, dock work, tree planting, anything really! Any advice would be great! Thank you

Just a friendly warning for anyone looking for a rental in Fanny Bay about SOME of the funnies out this way.

🏚️ Slumlords exist everywhere on Vancouver Island, and the housing shortage gives them plenty of opportunities. After my own experience (and conversations with former tenants) at one property not far from the Rosewall Log Sort, I put together this little PSA.

This isn't about shaming anyone. No need to muddy the waters in Mud Bay. It's pretty obvious driving down Island Highway South which property REFLECTS badly on its owner. This is about protecting vulnerable people from explotation, manipulation, and financial, physical or verbal abuse.

Some recurring issues renters should watch for anywhere:

• Broken plumbing, electrical, heating, mold, leaks, and rats. Plus, the expectation that tenants fix everything themselves. Without pay, or rent reduction, and definitely no "thank you".

• Legitimate safety concerns are brushed off with laughter. Followed by a long tale about how much tougher life was back in 'berta and why it's weak to expect basic maintenance.

• "Cheap rent" becomes the excuse for substandard housing, and you're reminded daily what a "deal" you're getting. The landlord WILL constantly be hanging around, burning the wood he sold you, suggesting you spend your own money on repairs. But he WON'T fix things or give notice before entering. He's more of an awful roommate than a landlord.

• Rules? They don't apply because "it's a rooming house." Building standards, tenancy laws, and eviction timelines don't matter, despite the lack of business license a rooming house requires.

• Anyone who questions unsafe conditions quickly becomes the problem. Intimidation, harassment, and pressure to leave seem to be the preferred conflict resolution strategy. If you speak up, you get kicked out.

• Repairs are the cheapest temporary fix imaginable. If proper materials cost money, there's always a piece of scrap nearby that will do.

• Utilities paid by tenants power the landlord's projects too. When the water system failed from filling up large totes the tenants got to spend a week hauling buckets of water to flush toilets. No showers, no laundry, just a burned out pump because the landlord lives "off grid".

• Appliances that die become yard décor because "a fella might find value in the metal someday."

Even longtime tenants who quietly pay bills, keep tidy, and help neighbours with grocery rides eventually become targets. I've experienced and heard similar stories from enough former renters to convince me to post this.

The sad part is many tenants are vulnerable or have few housing options. Good people live in the area. The problem might be nepotistic needs or substance soaked seekers enabling the person responsible for the property.

I'd hate to see someone else end up in the same situation simply because they didn't know what they were walking into.

Take care of each other, and our beautiful community. ✌️

Cumby sh*t heads

Hey dude. If you bought your kid an 80 cc dirt bike (green) and your pride and joy is 14-15 years old, im sure you did a fine job raising him. Because he's trying to threaten a 6'2 , 240 lbs trades man for "cutting him off" in cumby. Kid has no insurance and no lights on his dirt bike. Hes also speeding and trying to fling rocks at my truck. What a little tool. Im glad he ran away, once I got out to see why he was following me and yelling it was apparent what an a hole dad you are. Rant over. Any one else deal with these little shits ?

Kids Haircuts

Where is the best place to get a haircut than isn't purely with clippers for an 8 and 11 year old boy. We've tried a few places and either the atmosphere is off or the cuts end up looking hacky and weird a week or so later

Love the new bridge

Royston to Comox for lunch today. Before this bridge it was hard to get a good 20-30 km ride in without doing laps. We tried crossing at 5th once but getting onto the bridge on the west side is hair raising. So instead of riding the greenway loop or QB-Parksville-Coombs-QB today we had lunch in Comox. Really looking forward to seeing what's next for active travel in Courtenay.
I would really like to see that unused rail line made into a trail from Parksville to Courtenay. Keep up the good work Bob Wells & Council.

Looking for ideas

Valleyview/Isfeld vs Brooklyn/Highland neighborhoods

My family and I are planning to move to the valley to be closer to my partner’s office. Our kids are young, but I’m thinking about what elementary and high schools might work best for us.

We’ve done some chit chatting with people we know who live in the Valley, and we’re hoping to move to one of these neighborhoods:

Near Valleyview elementary/ Isfeld high school
Near Brooklyn elementary / Highland high school

Being close to our kid’s schools is important for us. We would love to be able to either walk or bike when the weather isn’t stormy. And then let our kids walk to school solo when they’re in high school. It seems like the neighborhoods near either Isfeld or Highland high schools would be best for long term.

I’m curious if anyone has any experience about the difference between your kid’s experiences at Isfeld and Highland. Isfeld is larger and seems like it has more academic and sports opportunities. Highland is smaller, so maybe that would be better if you have a more reserved child who gets easily overwhelmed.

Any thoughts or suggestions about those high schools?

Do the students at those high schools walk to get lunch at any of the nearby shopping centers?

In Campbell River it seems like the high school students at both schools are always flocking the nearby stores over their lunch period, so I wanted to see if it was the same in the Valley.

I went to a smaller high school that seems similar to Highland, and I loved it for the most part. The only downside was my school wasn’t close to any restaurants, so my friends and I had to wait until we had our licenses to go anywhere fun for lunch. My partner went to a tiny small town high school. So having our kids attend a larger school like Isfeld feels different from our experiences. But different doesn’t always mean bad.

I think we probably should tour both schools before we house hunt haha!

Over the air antenna

Does anyone use over the air antenna any more? We no longer have tv subscriptions and I was thinking about this option. I know it's available, but not how well it works here.

Half Rounds

Hi all,

Was hoping to pick up some half rounds of wood with bark still on for a project at MARS wildlife rescue. I tried Thompson’s lumber mill and they don’t have any, and they recommended Dave Green but it says his yard is no longer operating.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks
