Help don't buy the wrong futon/tatamis.

Hiii I’m adhd and super sensitive, and I’ve realized that I hate sleeping on foam mattresses, even if they’re firm. They make me hurt all over, and besides, a bed takes up too much space in a bedroom: I need room to jump around and dance!

So I thought to myself, “But in Japan, don’t they all sleep on tatami mats? And that works really well, right?” But as I’ve been doing my research, it seems like there are tons of brands making “Westernized” futons that are really soft, whereas I want the real ones : the ones you roll up when you’re done! Could you recommend some good brands where I can order online? And also, any advice? Do I absolutely have to put a wooden base underneath? I already have hardwood floors at home. And how do you wash them? That’s it ^^ Thanks for your advice!

Recommendations for queen size bedframe

With the floors in my apartment, I’m gonna have to have my tatami mat on some kind of slitted bed frame so it can breathe.. anyone have any recommendations shipped to the states for under $200? Hoping for something like this but I see just crazy reviews and it looks like a lot of duplicate products are under different names

Anyone ordered Shiki from JP to US lately? Any idea on rough import cost. They are using UPS I think.

I can not figure this out. If it is under $100 that is fine I guess.

Tried it for the first time 2 days ago and the difference is night and day.

SERIOUSLY! I've been struggling with finding the right bed for a while for my posture. I lost my last mattress and have been sleeping on a leather loungue chair you can convert into a makeshift bed. I keep falling asleep on my arms or sleeping in very fucked up shoulder positions that give me a lot of back and arm pain when I wake up. I wake up all stiff and need tons of stretches to feel better.

I have been toying and experimenting with floor living for some time now and decided to take a risk last night and give it a shot. Following the advice of a youtuber called motivationaldoc, I used a rolled up towel for my head, and a pillow for my legs, and fell asleep on the floor with just a thin blanket underneath. Nothing else. I quickly fell asleep on my back.

It's amazing. Much less pain and my body feels like it has more mobility and I feel more refreshed. I understand some of the pain and waking up at night is my body not being used to it yet, so I'm going to keep practicing and researching different types of materials. But it's crazy how much different it is and only after 2 nights.

Western Mattress

I want to sleep on a futon but my husband doesn’t. He thinks it will be uncomfortable. I really want to sleep on the floor so much that we compromised when we moved to a new room.

Right now we put our western mattress on the floor. We stand it up every three days to air it out. We live in dry Southern California. Is this sustainable to prevent mold or am I deluding myself?

One month in - sleeping on the floor

Now that I have my futon for approximately a month, I thought I would share the little story behind.

I had a sofa-like bed for a while (since I moved in to this apartment 20-ish years ago). It served its purpose, but it was getting old, and had to be replaced. I grew liking the thought of getting a futon. I thought that sleeping on a harder surface might worth it on the long run, plus it would allow me to pack away my bed during the day, freeing up space. So I threw out my old bed (among other stuff), and ordered a foldable tatami and a queen-size futon from Japan.

Now I live alone, but I thought it could not hurt, just in case someone wants to sleep with me. I was not expecting it to be this warm. The first impressions were: it's super cozy, super inviting, and super warm. It took some time to adjust to the harder surface, but now that I have it for a month, I believe I can confidently say that I am really happy with the switch. I sleep well, my room is more tidy, and now that it gets freed up every day, my floor is much cleaner (easy to clean up, and no more dust bunny party under the bed).

My main difficulty was the "how to air out" part, because I have no balcony, and all my windows are on one side, so opening them helps nothing. Still, I got a blanket hanger, so I can air it out once a week.

I also managed to get a futon dryer. I do not know if it is allowed to put pictures in comments, but if yes, I will add a photo to the comments too. That one I also got from Japan. There might have been products for European voltage, but I could not really find any, and I somehow trusted better the ones they are using in Japan, so I ordered one from there (of course getting a transformator to convert the European voltage to Japanese was again an extra cost).

Overall, what can I say? Switching to floor sleeping and getting an authentic futon was one of the best choices I made in the past couple of years. I am really happy.

Need purchasing help on next floor mattress/futon - TFS or bust?!

My husband and I have slept on a floor mattress off and on since 2018 and were exclusively on a traditional 3” futon (a very cheap one though) and a tatami mat on top of hard wood floor from 2018-2021, so we’re not foreign to the practice! We then switched to a sleep number traditional bed because well we got older and “thought” our sleeping on the floor life wasn’t as “adult” completely ridiculous, but such is life.

Now we really want to go back but get something quality. I’m still leaning towards a futon on a platform bed with thicker tatami mats to raise off the floor a little.

There are a million comments on this thread hating The Futon Shop but they seem to be the only one that supports a traditional king sizing with quality materials. So if you hate them please elaborate on why and what a potential solution or alternative is!

Need advice on my first floor matress, very likely a MAXOYO

Processing img dmy75zeld6ah1...

I want something fairly good for my back/posture (i'm a side sleeper, 176cm, 72kg). Coming from a very soft bed, way too soft. Been sleeping in soft beds almost all my life as a 41yo man.

The one on the screenshot above costs about 135$, hardness = medium soft/plush. Is that too soft?

Budget is quite tight, preferrably max $150.

Any advice appreciated.

I live in a super small appartment, 18sq2 or so, no balcony to air anything out so plan is to just roll it up after each morning, and eventually get a futon dryer or something similar.

YOUR WET DREAMS WONT STOP UNTIL YOU SLEEP ON THE FLOOR

As the title says your wet dreams wont stop until you get rid of that soft mattress which is sagging your spine how do you expect your life force to travel if your spine is blocked and to the people who also use pillows its even worse also on mattress your muscles work all night making you groggy in the morning and to those who have lower back pain like me you should absolutely sleep on the floor every night of mattress sleep is ruining you on the floor your spine is straight to the tailbone to the neck dont use any pillow it was hard at the start but i got used to it now i wake up without alarm clock before sunrise i dont know why this is but it works and also i wake up fresh and rested just get a thin cotton blanket lay it on the hard floor and lay down on your back all night and watch your presenc, posture energy all increase also your kundalini has a open path to rise

Floorsleeping for heavier people

I have been toying with the idea of switching to a futon or similar for sleep for some time now, but do have a concern about how comfortable this would be for a heavy/overweight person.

I weigh in at 170kg/340lbs-ish. Not horribly unfit as I am a smallholder doing most things without mechanisation.

I have been having issues with regular pocket-sprung mattresses over the last 10 years. Even though I have bought ones rated for my weight I sleep terribly and wake up with more hip and knee pain than I went to bed with. I do like a hard mattress hence I thought a futon directly on the floor might offer better support without the pain. In discussing this with my family, they have brought up the possible issue of weight vs such a thin mattress.

So, I am asking here, just in case anyone knows. Thank you.

Transitioning to futon - Can I use bedframe for a bit?

Hey all-

Please don't hate on me - my back is killing me and I live in a small apartment. We are looking to switch out our old mattress and replace with a futon (taking recommendations - but looking at futon tokyo / futonbedsfromjapan). Just getting rid of the old mattress is going to be a bit of a pain in my back and I don't think the local pickup will take our bedframe.

Long story short - my frame is a lightly padded but firm - has a little give, airflow, etc.. and will get us about 12inches closer to the ground.

Has anyone done this?
Is this a bad idea?

I think we will eventually get rid of it - but just looking to take care of things slowly vs having to do it all in 1 day (we don't have the space for a staging area) as well as buying some now, and more later.

Thanks in advance!

Shikibuton directly on hardwood is becoming flatter in the middle, would a foldable tatami help?

We have natural hardwood floor and our shikibuton is becoming a bit flat, I can feel my hips against the hardwood. We are only 2 months in.

Would a foldable tatami help? If so, which material would you recommend. Based in EU.

Zonli Wheat mattress (new) or used(FB marketplace) Avocado Latex topper?

If you could only spend $100 ish which one would you pick? My set up currently is mat on the hardwood floor, wool rug underneath. But I’m thinking of switching to a single instead of full since my new room is small.
