Japanese futon upgrade vs continuing to use backpacking nemo pad with comforter fluff?

Hi all,

I have been sleeping on the ground on a NEMO pad that I used for thru hiking. I put the pad on the ground then I put a comforter folded over it and sometimes add my down sleeping bag under me as well if I want more warmth. I was thinking it might make more sense to "upgrade" to a Japanese futon that I can just fold up and is one thing but I am worried it might be "too soft" and not flat enough compared to how I normally sleep now.

For the record I am not uncomfortable at all in my current set up and have no pains or issues, the whole thing is probably thinner and less fluffy than a Japanese futon I would guess?

Any thoughts on this? I do think having the whole thing in one fold up is nice to have, but I don't want to add too much fluff.

Thanks

Anyone else just sleeps on cold hard floor. Nothing in between?

I tried it for a day. It was hard to fall asleep but my posture has been top class after that ✨

Curious to try, but small space?

Hello! I've recently been thinking about what it'd be like to have a sleeping solution which I can roll up, easily take out to air, and so forth. I've also been having troubles sleeping onto my budget ikea slats. So I'm looking to try out floor sleeping with my normal (already rather thin) mattress, and see if I truly vibe with it.

My main issue is that my room is pretty small. I'm in the middle of decluttering, but I still find it though to find a space in which to comfortably lay out something.

The last couple of nights, I simply moved my bed framw to the side, threw an old blanket onto the floor, and pushed all of my mattress onto it. I definitely feel like I had less trouble sleeping, but you can image how messy and cramped a small room looks like with a bedframe shoved in the middle of the way, as my head almost lays down under my desk lol.

I was wondering, do you think I should try an MDF base for my bedframe, as an alternative to slats? Or should I just look into eliminating it eventually?

Issues after a week or so floor sleeping with pain when walking due to anterior pelvic tilt

Hello. I have pretty bad anterior pelvic tilt to a degree that I can feel a lot of pressure on my tailbone once I lay on my back on a hard surface like the floor. If I flex my abs down I can make my back be even all across the floor, but obviously that isn't sustainable.

I've tried floor sleeping around 3 different times, and all 3 times after 1-2 weeks I start getting very annoying specific pain near my tailbone whenever I walk. It's not constant pain, but if I lean or angle myself in a specific direction it will hurt very bad.

I've even tried putting pillows under my feet, back, etc and everything and softening the carpet I sleep on, etc. But it still appears eventually. Is this something that I will have to just "get used to" and fight thru until my body fixes it or do I have to work on my anterior pelvic tilt for a few months and fix it before floor sleeping? Thanks.

Ok, this is actually insane

This was my first time sleeping on the floor (and basically raw dogging it, slept on nothing more than a thin blanket).

All major health metrics are through the roof!

Is this a common experience?

Transition question! And recommendation please

So ive started out on my journey with an IKEA 4 inch futon and did that for quite a while then found this sub and invested in a zonli 2.5 inch i was on that for a while probably a month and through the month having a hard time getting used to the hardness (i already struggle with sleep issues sometimes and im a sidesleeper) also i realized that these things must be maintained i freaked out thinking it had mold or something.. now im sleeping in a conventional mattress in the interim but i dont want my body to get used to it.

Ive been doing some research on the used marketplace and found a futon by the company called karup and this futon is 5.3 inches. I also am looking into a FULI futon but this one is 2 inches and i fear that ill have the same issue so i was thinking i can put the fuli on top of the zonli? Will that be hard to maintain them both?

I need help deciding what to do if anyone has any recommendations please ! Or some advice?

Is one thats 100% cotton very necessary? I really wanna make a good investment Im in NYC btw so the market is pretty good for this

Is this futon really 100% cotton?

Hello, after watching a few YouTube videos, I decided that I want to try sleeping on a futon mattress, so while scrolling on Amazon I found this one. It claims to be 100% cotton, but it doesn’t have any reviews and its price is only 80 euros… has anyone tried it?

Can anyone recommend any futon under 100 euros that is 100% cotton and delivers to Italy? (Single bed size)

My mattress is on the tiled floor: how to avoid mold, cold, and pain?

It’s been about a month since I got a new mattress. I happen to spend a lot of time on it. The problem is that I can't stand my current bed base, so I put the mattress directly on the floor.

I'm realizing that the cold comes up a lot from the tiles, even now in May. I tried putting cardboard and blankets underneath, but it's not ideal and the cold air also seems to get in from the sides. On top of that, since I spend my days on the bed, the mattress is never aired out from underneath. I'm really afraid it will end up molding because of the moisture and the lack of air circulation, but I refuse to go back to my uncomfortable bed base.

To make things more difficult, I like to sleep on my side. I feel like if I buy a thinner mattress to deal with the floor issue, it won't be very comfortable because my hips and shoulders will hit the hard floor, which will make me hurt even more.

I don't know what to do for now. How do you effectively insulate your mattress from tiled floors, block the cold, and prevent mold without using a traditional bed base, while still keeping it comfortable for side sleeping?

Is Zonli the same or different than a general memory foam mattress topper?

Hello, I have been looking into trying out Zonli and am wondering if it is any different from a memory foam mattress topper? I spent months sleeping on the floor on a memory foam mattress topper and it was horrible. I have seen some pictures of the inside of a Zonli showing that it is egg crate foam. I am wondering if there is something different about Zonli that makes it better for floor sleeping than a general memory foam mattress topper?

I would like to one day invest in an authentic shikifuton but for now can go only try out an entry level option.

Also, would love to hear of anyone’s experience comparing Zonli with Fuli, Emoor, or D&D? They’re not as expensive as an authentic shikifuton, but I am wondering if they are worth the higher price than Zonli as an entry level option?

Thank you!

Experiences with Zonli?

Hey everyone, I’d love to hear of your experience with sleeping on Zonli please! I’ve been very interested in floor sleeping since seeing Natasha’s videos. I was looking into purchasing from Futonbedsfromjapan or FutonTokyo but the wait times are long, and I don’t know if I want to invest that much in it right now.

I’m tired of my regular mattress. I’m interested in floor sleeping to help relieve back and neck pain/stiffness/tension. I’d like to try Zonli, but there are many bad reviews. Years ago I spent many months sleeping on the floor on a memory foam mattress topper and it was horrible. I’m wondering if Zonli would be no different than that? I know it’s an egg crate foam.
I’m interested in the 4 inch, aware that it is not truly 4 inches.

Want to take the plunge, I like that Zonli is quicker and way more affordable. I just wonder if it will be so low quality that it’s not worth it.

I cosleep with my child and so whatever I get will be a queen size.

Would love to hear of experiences with Zonli please! Or other alternatives like Fuli, Emoor, D&D, which all have very mixed reviews as well. It would be good to hear if those options are worth the extra cost compared to Zonli or if they’re really not better than Zonli. Thanks!

So Futon Tokyo is the goat?

Finding an authentic japanese futon seems to be pretty controversial, but the consensus Ive gotten from this sub is that Futon Tokyo is the best? Can anyone experienced in the futon lore confirm before I drop a grand on this?
Thanks :)

Anyone tried Cocoon Company kapok mattresses?

Heya,

Cocoon company is a European company that sells kapok and natural latex mattresses. It is time for me to replace my old mattress, and I have one of their showrooms close by. A lot of their marketing revolves around mattresses for babies, but they also have adult sizes. I've been down their and tried both their mattresses and topper and quite liked how they felt. I haven't really been able to find any long term reviews of this brand ans wondering how kapok holds up over time?

I read their mattresses are overstuffed so they hold their shape for longer. Downside is that their 11 cm thick base mattresses aren't foldable and I'm unsure how to air them out in an apartment.

I'm currently sleeping on wooden floor on my old foam topper that I have folded in half. I let it air a bit in the morning and then pack it away in the closet. I still have my old bed and mattress for when my boyfriend comes over and sleeps at my place.

Folding mattress

I have been lurking here a while and learned so much about different options. I will be moving and will need a nee simple setup because the place is small. I already have a folding exercise gym mat with 2inch vinyl enclosed foam that is pretty firm and can be used as a base. I have used it with just a thin cotton bedspread on top but would like a little support since I do side sleep half the time.

I looked into latex- too heavy. Cotton- gets flat quickly. I looked at some folding mattresses on A-mazon but the reviews seemed paid for. I like the idea of something that can be made into a floor couch during the day.

Any suggestions? Something for Florida climate and not too expensive since this is a trial phase.

Trauma-related floor sleeping: How to properly insulate against a freezing tile floor?

TL;DR: I have a phobia of bed frames due to trauma and can only feel safe sleeping on the floor. However, the cold tile floor is draining my energy and ruining my recovery. I need advice on DIY or professional insulation (cardboard, mats, tatami) to stay warm all year round.

Post:

I'm feeling incredibly frustrated right now because I've hit a breaking point. I woke up at 4 PM today, completely exhausted, because I spent the entire night shivering. This happens way too often and it’s stalling my recovery.

I struggle with CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), and I have a deep phobia of bed frames/springs because of past trauma. The floor is the only place that feels "immutable" and safe to me. It’s where I feel grounded. But right now, my setup is just a mattress on a thin plastic mat on top of a tile floor. In May, with the rain and temperature drops, the tiles act like a heat sink and suck all the warmth out of my body.

I need to make this work long-term, even in winter. I’m thinking about using layers of cardboard, thick blankets under the mattress, or maybe investing in a Japanese tatami or a professional thermal mat. I also need to get better at preparing my "survival kit" (clean warm clothes and extra blankets ready) so I don't have to think when I'm crashed at night.

Does anyone have experience with permanent floor sleeping in cold/uninsulated houses? What are the best materials to create a truly airtight thermal barrier between the mattress and a cold floor?

Best way to sleep inclined on the floor?

If we can combine floor sleeping with inclined sleeping that would be a great combination. I would like to sleep on the floor, but I also believe in inclined sleeping 7 inches for better glymphatic drainage and reflux prevention etc.

Does anyone know any equipment that is non-toxic to sleep inclined on the floor or closest thing to sleeping on the floor? I know there are foam wedges, but I'm a bit concerned about the chemicals in those. I was not able to find a simple way to elevate a minimalist surface.

Need Recommendation for Latex Topper Floor Sleeping

Can anyone please tell me what latex topper works well for them for floor sleeping? I would like a specific recommendation of the topper that works for them. If not the specific topper then the specifications like ILD etc. would be helpful. I want to make sure I get one that works well for the right firmness for the floor that won't bottom out and is not for on a bed. Thank You. Anything else you can tell me about what good habits would be helpful. Such as picking up the topper and hanging it up during the day to keep it dry. Need for tatami matt under it.
