Höchst · Rundgang durch die alte Stadt am Main, 2019 und 1966

back in 2019, i picked up a photobook published in 1966 that happened to include a photo taken from the same perspective as one of my first shots from my days in frankfurt. thought i'd try to recreate a few others..

1 · the old rose alley | die alte rosengasse (rudi angenendt, 1966)

2 · castle square with stair gable of the old town hall | schloßplatz mit treppengiebel des alten rathauses (r. angenendt, 1966)

höchst's picturesque castle square is the centerpiece of its old town and one of frankfurt's treasured public spaces

3 · former guesthouse "the carp" | das ehemalige wirtshaus „der karpfen“ (r. angenendt, 1966)

4 · north portal of saint justin's church | nordportal der justinuskirche (r. angenendt, 1966)

st. justin's church, c. 830, is frankfurt's oldest building and one of germany's oldest churches with nearly 1200 years of continuous service. it is also recognized as one of the few exisiting early medieval churches and for its pointed-arch doorway featuring paul of thebes and anthony the great, considered one of the region's finest works of sculpture dating from the 15th century

5 · house entrance on wed | hauseingang an der wed (r. angenendt, 1966)

6 · between justinuskirchplatz and schloßplatz | zwischen justinuskirchplatz und schloßplatz (r. angenendt, 1966)

7 · main gate with toll tower and castle tower | das maintor mit zollturm und schloßturm (r. angenendt, 1966)

höchst's city walls and main gate were built between 1396 and 1460 in order to protect the city, belonging to the electorate of mainz, from the neighbouring city of frankfurt and other threats. behind the wall, the 14th century "old castle" originally served as the keep of a toll house

in the second world war, höchst was largely spared from air raids with only four houses destroyed beyond repair. after the war, american soldiers occupied the castle following orders to use the property as the new european headquarters for the american forces radio service (..which might explain why a book from this period doesn't include any photos of höchst's crowning piece of architecture)

8 · wheel of mainz | mainzer rad (r. angenendt, 1966)

although its origins are unknown, the wheel of mainz likely refers to st. martin, the patron of both the city of mainz and mainz cathedral, whose archbishops were said to be the "charioteers of the church of mainz"

Neue Koalition in Frankfurt: Bleibt Dezernentin Eileen O’Sullivan trotz Volt-Sonderrolle?

Frankfurt Airport - Lounge Access Question (T1 to T3 and back to T1)

Hi all,

I heard about Frankfurt airport recently opening up the new Terminal 3. All the nice lounges have moved there including the new one that is after security and passport control. I will be flying in from Austria to Terminal 1 (still in Schengen) to catch a flight to the US (non-schengen) that is also in Terminal 1. My layover is long and so I was wondering if I can get to Terminal 3 to use the lounge first and then come back to Terminal 1 to depart the non-schengen flight. Would this be possible if my flight departs in Terminal 1? If anyone can provide advice on how to navigate the airport that would greatly be appreciated. I wonder if they will let me through security and passport control in Terminal 3 if my ticket has a gate in Terminal 1.

Advise on Parking situation in Frankfurt

I have a sticky situation. We just bought and moved to a new appointment and I have a covered garage in the common courtyard (second from last). The last garage belong to a neighbour who is not a resident of the building. He used to rent the garage, but had to buy it since the developer was selling the whole building. He has an XL van, which he anyway cannot park inside the garage, so he uses another parking lot.

But he constantly has visitors who will park in front of the Privatgrundstück marked area in front of his garage, and ofcourse the car blocks my garage. I have left notes on the cars saying you are blocking my entrance, and its illegal. Today throughout the day whenever I tried to take out the car, there was one car or another blocking my exit. At some point I was really pissed and had to report to the Ordnungszamt, and take a taxi since I was late for a meeting.
This guy came to me couple of weeks back quite aggressively asking, 'Und warum blockierst du jetzt meine Garage?' when I had to park there, since there was a Handyman's car parked and I didnt have the maneuvering area to put my car into the garage. After I left the note, he met me on the street and was acting all apologetic yesterday, but today when I needed to take the car out his visitor was blocking again.

I have reported to the Hausverwaltung, they are a bit slow - but they told me they cant really do anything against illegal parking. I can take my car out and just park in front of my garage, blocking the whole area (kind of a dick move), but this is the only way I can ensure that I can take my car out whenever I want. I even put up a new Ein/Ausfahr frei halten, auch gegenuber sign yesterday, and ofcourse car was parked this afternoon.

Being new to the neighbourhood I dont want to go all guns blazing yet, but I also dont want to handle it softly. There's a clear boundary, and ofcourse the guy is pushing it around. What are my options here?

Edit: We are all owners. The garages are all from the residents of my building, all owners except the last one is owned by a neighbour from another building. The common areas are all covered under the Teilungserklärung - its mentioned that the neighbour has Sondernutzungrecht of the last garage and this should be kept free at all times. Which he himself violates and blocks my garage.

Crochet workshop maybe?

Hey everyone

Bit of a random post, but would anyone in Frankfurt be interested in a super beginner-friendly crochet workshop?

I recently left my corporate job and before starting my next role, I wanted to spend some time doing slower and more meaningful things, meeting people, being creative, etc.

Crochet helped me through some rough periods in life and I’ve always loved how calming and grounding it is. So I thought maybe it would be nice to share it with other people too.

Absolute beginners are welcome. Like “I have never touched yarn in my life” level welcome 👶💗

I’d provide the yarn and hooks. The fee would be very small/symbolic since I’m mostly doing this for the community aspect and to see if people would even enjoy something like this.

Minimal means around €10 including materials. If you already have your own crochet materials ( hook and yarn) then honestly just pay whatever you feel the session was worth and whatever you feel you learned !

Also, I’m currently learning German myself, so no pressure language-wise. I speak English and Arabic, and my German currently survives mostly through vibes and confidence 😂

Would anyone actually be interested in this?

Everyone is welcome ofc💗

(Extra discount if you’re C1 German and willing to emotionally support my grammar 😂)

RMV KombiTicket Question

Hi! I am visiting Frankfurt for the Metallica concerts this weekend, the 2 day show tickets (Friday and Sunday) came with a RMV KombiTicket, on the KombiTickets it seems to list the valid dates of the ticket from May 22nd until the 25th at 3am. My question is, is it really only valid for the show dates (22nd & 24th)to get to the show? Or would I be able to use transportation on Saturday the 23rd with it as well? Thank you in advance for the help!

1 Woche parken in Frankfurt?

Servus Leute,

Why can’t I book train journeys to/from Frankfurt in the future?

I’m trying to book international train journeys involving Frankfurt Hbf/oder for future dates, but a lot of routes seem unavailable or impossible to reserve.

For example:

  • Frankfurt → Kraków
  • Milan → Frankfurt

What’s strange is that other routes seem bookable, but anything involving Frankfurt either shows no trains, no prices, or no reservation options.

Is this because of:

  • construction works at Frankfurt Hbf?
  • timetable changes?
  • delayed international ticket releases?
  • or something else?

I checked DB and other apps/websites and get similar issues.

Has anyone else noticed this or knows when these routes usually become available?

Thanks!

Does anyone train at MMA Spirit or has been there? Looking for feedback and your experience. I am considering joining them for Grappling or BJJ

As the title suggests. Have you or anyone in your circle trains at MMA Spirit or used to go there. How’s your experience been? How are the trainers?

How much do they prioritize safety and right technique?

Any pointers or input are welcome.

A place to get some humble chicken shawarma around bockenheim / kirchplatz / northwester part of the city?

Hi there. I am visiting over the weekend and i crave for some shawarma with pickles and stuff since weeks. I hoped to pick some up on my bike ride.
Where could i get some good and affordable? So general 'Imbiss' frame, not some restaurant or something.
I think of the area around the Leipziger Straße maybe, idk.

Comfort zone vs moving abroad - Frankfurt

Hi everyone,

I’m a 32F from Czechia and I’ve just received a job offer in Frankfurt for 60k EUR/year. I’m super excited, but also honestly quite nervous.

The biggest thing on my mind is whether such a huge life change is actually worth it. Right now, I have a very comfortable life at home and even a slightly higher net income, so financially it’s not necessarily a big upgrade. But I feel like this experience could really shape me as a person, push me out of my comfort zone, and maybe help me grow professionally in the future as well.

I’d love to ask people living in Frankfurt a few questions.

First, is 60k considered a good salary for a single person? And is it difficult to find a flat for a foreign women with such salary? I don't mind the flat share either. The company address is on the North of the city.

I don’t drink much, party, or smoke. I mostly cook at home and live quite simply. What I really enjoy, though, is sports, nature, hiking, and long-distance trails, so I usually spend my weekends somewhere in the woods. On Google Maps, the surroundings of Frankfurt look surprisingly green, but I’m not sure what the reality is like. Are there good places nearby for hiking and nature escapes?

One thing I’m slightly worried about is how Czechs are perceived there. In the past, I’ve occasionally experienced some weird prejudice in Germany, so I’m curious about the general atmosphere. I’m also quite introverted, and being shy already makes communication difficult sometimes, especially when you feel like people may already have certain opinions about you.

I’d honestly really appreciate your thoughts, especially from people who moved to Frankfurt alone or native Frankfurt residents. It would genuinely help me decide whether to stay in my comfort zone or just go a little wild and try something new :)

Thank you! And if you’re from Frankfurt and would maybe like to grab a coffee or go for a walk sometime, feel free to DM me :)
