How to stop being afraid?

Hey everyone, I've been n furry for many years now. But literally no one knows irl and I have zero furry friends online. I would like to change that but I'm incredibly nervous about it.

I know there's a lot of judgment and criticism towards the fandom. But how do I just ignore it and be myself anyway? I've always been iffy about being my true self online, as people dont really have a filter online and can say whatever. So I guess I'm kinda scared of the response?

In the past I would have to hype myself up even when just replying to someone else. I dont like this mindset and I'm trying to change it. I wanna express myself and stop worrying. Does anyone else feel like this? Can I get some advice or tips on how to change it? Would be much appreciated!

Eyebrows or no Eyebrows?

I am simply wondering if people prefer anthropomorphic animals with or without eyebrows and why.

I do really like how eyebrows can look on anthropomorphic animals because it makes them look more expressive but i am just not sure if i prefer them with or without eyebrows, and this has been bothering me for a whole year. So im thinking if i get people's opinions on this it might help me form reasons on why i might like or dislike either one.

(Also this is my first reddit post and i did not expect it to be about eyebrows)

Am lost with the labels 🐺🦊🦦🐻

Hi

Thanks for clicking, I was talking to a friend, we met 1 month ago and we agreed to not show faces if we are uncomfortable, but today he said he wants to reveal if I want to reveal too and I said it's okay. Then we showed face and I got the reply:

“Mannn you give so much husky vibes! Grow a beard and never shave your body again!”

Tbh I don't know what are the differences between them, I got called an otter once which was weird to hear that time and the other time I asked another friend if they know where to find furry references for a wolf/husky furry character and he replied back

“Just use your facial features”

The thing is none of them actually know what they are saying 😭 when I ask what does it mean they say, it's just the vibes.

I know I could search on tge web vut highly prefer to contact some guys online and know their opinions too so go on and teach me what are these cute animal tags👀

Should I rejoin the furry fandom?

Long story short I was lurking in furry spaces over the past decade since I was in high school as I liked the concept of anthro animals plus it gave me an opportunity to get out of my human male form which I feel off in. I also have a passion for drawing and transformation stuff and biology. Thing is I have a perfectionism mindset that I needed to have the “perfect” fursona or else it wasn’t valid due to my ocd. I tried making some trans fursonas but they didn’t exactly click either. Alongside not meshing with the furry spaces I participated in plus wanting to get along with family I retreated a little.

This time around I’d like to make a fursona that helps me be more comfortable in my own skin and feel better about myself. I also want to be more mindful in creating and consuming content too; I want to carve a niche in a specific thing and get good at it and find community. I want to chase happiness not perfection. And also I want to accept my autism and my attraction to guys which is just a part of me.

Is having a female version of my human self a valid fursona to have even though she is human?

I know it technically isn’t furry but if I presented as my self in the fandom but as a human woman would I still be welcome? I don’t have the freedom to be myself in real life and the furry fandom is one of the few things that clicks for me socially as an autistic person. Also I like the cute bara stuff here.

Question from a non-furry: Does being attracted to furry characters make you a furry if you don't want to be one yourself?

I had this debate a couple times with people, so I figure I'll ask those who are probably in-the-know.

The debate is the question: Does being attracted to a furry character make a person a furry? Even when that person doesn't want to be any sort of anthropomorphic character themselves?

A major point in the debate is that "furry" is more of a self identity sort of thing, either identifying as or wishing to be a furred being of some sort. And having an attraction to a furred character while wanting to be your normal human self doesn't make you a furry. But the counter point was also said that it's just a different type of furry, that someone is a furry if they're into furry characters, whether they identify as it themselves or not. The people debating this do not personally identify as furries.

Where do you all stand on this idea? Can a person be into furries without wanting to be one themselves and not be considered a furry? Or are they, unwittingly, just another type of furry?

Edit To add context: It came from a discussion with some guys who were talking about attractive fictional characters, such as Lola Bunny, Krystal from Starfox, Gadget, plenty of others. It was very much a "Wait... If I'm into that, does that make me a furry?" Sort of thing, and then my argument was that I think you need to personally identify as a furry, and that just being into furry characters isn't enough, but it's all about your own identity. Others agreed but others said they think that just being attracted to that makes you a furry.

How to make friends in furry fandom

I’ve been part of the fandom for a long time, but I’ve mostly been inactive. Recently, I’ve started feeling like I’d really like to join or create a small group of friends with similar hobbies who are also into the fandom.
I tried finding people on Discord or Telegram, but huge group chats just aren’t for me. They feel like constant spam, and it’s rare to actually get a response. I also find it hard to catch up with the conversation and jump in.
I want to start going to conventions too, but probably not until I have some kind of mask at least. So yeah… ;_; I don’t really know where to start. Maybe you have some tips on how to make friends in the fandom?

Anyone else use furries as a litmus test?

I just finished my freshman year of college, and from day one of classes in the fall, I was pretty open about being in the fandom (furry pins on my bag/hat, in a campus furry server, saying yes if anyone asked, etc). Though I’ve noticed I also do something else as well:

When I’m meeting new people in queer/nerd spaces, I’ll casually drop something about my fursona in conversation (usually if pokemon is brought up, since his design is partially inspired by vaporeon). I use it as a sort of litmus test to see how socially chill someone is. Like, if they’re not at least tolerant of something as tame as the average furry, then they’re probably not someone I want to hang around willingly

Anyone else do this?

The reality of building a furry browser MMO on a tiny budget (and why we need a social media manager)

Hey everyone!! :D

I wanted to ask everyone how they believe new furry social spaces should be run.

A small team of us is working on a comfy, browser-based, (adult only)), 2D social sandbox game called Furrytopia! The idea is to reproduce the memories of sites like Club Penguin and Animal Jam, where you can travel around biomes, decorate "Dens," and trade stuff. :)
In order to provide communities their own rooms, we are also incorporating Discord-style themed servers into it.

We are a small team with a very limited budget, which is the biggest reality check for us. It's gonna be a huge challenge to balance asset moderation and community safety on a tight budget because we want to let users upload their own unique art and fashion files using "Biscuits," an in-game hard currency.

I'd love to know what makes you think that a new social space is genuinely secure, friendly, and well-run. And maybe also what you think are the most common mistakes made by indie devs when creating a platform (or game)?

---

Also!! We are searching for a Social Media Manager:

We are currently lookin for a Social Media Manager who is a member of the furry community to join us because we are small and totally focused on getting the engine operating! To manage our public roadmap, provide updates, and influence how our community develops from the start, we need someone who enjoys these kinds of games.

You can apply or check out our progress here if you're interested in community management or want to see what we're creating:

What do you think about some artists becoming affordable to only wealthy commissioners?

The longer an artist makes art, the higher their prices raise over time. Either because they keep getting increasing bills, medical costs, inflation and higher cost of living, because of the calculation of years working + time spent learning + hours put in = price, or all of the above.

If an artist has been working for a long time, and has honed their craft a lot, they usually become exorbitantly expensive and not at all affordable for the average person.

I'll see commissions of digital art go for around $2k, YCHs where some spots are around $1.2k, and short looped 5 second animations for $2k.
Some are even crazier and have prices like 5k for a full body, 3k for spots in a YCH, and 6k for a short looped animation.

A lot of artists eventually end up opening only around 3-5 slots a year, auctions for those slots that only go to the richest and highest bidders.

The only people that end up paying for these eventually are popufurs and those that commission TONS of art and have a massive amount of money for this kind of thing. They'll even bid in the comments against each other and when you look, they're all recognizable people that get tons of art all the time because they're rich.

Do you think this is right? I know art is a "luxury item", but do you think it's correct that lots of artists will go from being affordable to everyone, to being only affordable by the wealthy?

Pup mask at a furry convention?

Hello! I don't have the money for a fur suit but I do have a pup mask. Is it appropriate or common to wear a pup mask at a furry convention?

The harkness test is invalid to use.

The harkness test if you don't know, is an image showing that if an animal is an adult, can speak English or has the brain capacity to consent, it's okay to have/make NSFW of the animal. HOWEVER. There is a lot more than just those 3 that make it okay to draw or have the NSFW of said species.

My rules for if it's okay to have NSFW of a species is if it's on two legs, speaks any human language, can consent, is above 18 years, has human genitalia (knots and such ARE borderline zoophilic, you can hate me all you want but having an animals genitals on your phone no matter if it's on a fursuit or on a drawing of a fursona, is borderline zoophilic.) and acts more human than the species it represents. However I am okay with nods to the species' origin species in SFW art of the character.

The harkness test never was and never will be fully valid to be used truthfully, if you think otherwise, then go relearn everything about it and what makes up an actual humane/ethical NSFW art of a furry.

Thank you, don't send death threats to me please.

I tried to tell my mom about my furry side

I was very vague about it because i was very scared of her possible reaction. I told her that i want to live in the US (told her that mutiple times already) and that i have a secret: The reason why i always felt like a fish out water. I don't hide anything from her and she always does her best to understand me but this time was different. For the first time in my life i don't trust her and i'm scared of her. I'm from south italy (27 years old). I know that there are furries in italy too (very few however) but i find US furries more interesting

Edit: I told her in the end and everything is fine now. So no need to give me a dislike, thank you.

2xEdit: Thanks to all of you for the advice. Sorry if i had inadvertently offended some of you guys about US furries being more interesting that european ones. I thought that furries weren't doing so well in europe but apparently i was wrong. I also have horrible memories of my birthplace that's also why i wanted to move in the US. I'll start by meeting italian furrries.

quick question.

if animals could speak and talk, y’know Animal Farm style, do you think they would like furries? I personally think they’d see it as Animal Blackface. What’s your stance? (This is not attacking anyone don’t be soft.)

Is there such a thing as “fur death”? Asking as a 30yo who fell out of the fandom

I’m a 30yo gay fur in Croatia and I haven’t really been active since my mid-20s. These days the only furry stuff that reaches me is the pop furs on IG, the muscle ones with the big followings, and whenever I scroll through chats and groups I just feel out of step with all of it.

The fandom used to be the one place where being different was fine. That was the whole point, and I got accepted for it. Now I look at the younger furs and I can’t tell if I’ve aged out or if I’m just the guy who’d show up and accidentally make everyone cringe. My local scene feels mostly dead, and what’s left seems to skew really young (or am I wrong about that?).

And the thing is, it’s not like I have a fallback. The gay community here in Croatia was a pretty rough experience for me, honestly less accepting than the furry one ever was, so it’s not as if I drifted off into some warmer place. I just drifted.

So here’s what I keep coming back to: we joke about twink death, but is there a fur death too? And if there is, what does that make me, a gray fur?

Anyone else hit this in their 30s? Did you find a way back in, or a different corner of the fandom that actually fit?

Hello, I’m not a furry, but I am curious about all of you.

Why are you a furry?

What do you like about being a furry? How has being a part of the furry community benefited your life?

I ask, because I tend to frequent a lot of fandom spaces. I read fanfiction, look at fanart, and listen to fan songs on YouTube. I’ve been in the Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, and Undertale/Deltraune fandoms. I feel like there is a lot of overlap between us and you all.

I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and I know a lot of you are too. I think I ended up in these spaces as an awkward and shy kid who didn’t yet know she was queer and had trouble making friends. I would come here, because it allows me to see stories I couldn’t in mainstream culture and gave me more of the things I loved.

My first fandom was Harry Potter. As a child, I was often lonely. Therefore, the Harry Potter books were my friend. Wasn’t I excited to learn that I could engage with the thing I loved beyond books and movies. Fanfiction, of course, and fandoms in general tend to be seen as cringe. I think you can relate to the feeling.

We just have a lot in common, I think. However, I never ended up as a furry. I wonder why. One of my favorite movies as a kid was Zootopia. I just liked the world-building of the city. It felt lived-in and like the creators really thought out what it would be like for such a diverse population of animals to live together. It felt like a sandbox where a million stories could be happening all at once. I heard that an attraction to anthropomorphic animals often gets people into being a furry. I kinda have a thing for Nick Wilde, but I think that’s mostly his voice, lol.

I guess the point of this post is that I could easily see me in another life, if I went down a different road, being a furry. It just kinda makes sense. I wonder why I didn’t.

So why are you a furry? As a kid, I was taught that being a furry was weird and cringe, but as I got older I let it go. They‘re not really hurting anyone, so what’s the problem?

What was your experience with becoming a furry, and how has the community impacted your life? Please feel free to share your experiences. All of them are much appreciated. Thank you!
