Want to hitchhike but not allowed to

It really sucks because it something I really wanted to do for a while but my family won't allow me. I don't want to run away and scare my family or make them extra worried. How do I convince them to let me hitchhike? At least for a week or something. I think my family would be too worried but I want to do it so bad. How can I convince my family to let me live my life? They only started letting me out of the house by myself at like 14-15 then restricted me abit more, then around 19-20 they let me go out by myself but they have a tracker on my phone and I must tell them everywhere I go.

Any advice?

Where do I best sleep for little money?

Hey hey, I’m starting my hitchhiking trip tomorrow passing through Trieste - parts of Slovenia - the Croatian coast and ending in Montenegro, maybe even going to Albania if I have time (one month).

I have a hammock and a good tarp with my and was planning on paying camping spots when in big cities and just putting the hammock up in the mountains or on hikes, while also asking people that take me in the car if I can put my hammock on their ground. I’m realizing now that maybe there is some better ways I haven’t thought of, and that the internet could now!

So if anyone has any tips on how to sleep best in those countries it would be greatly welcome!!
Thanks a lot

How long does it usually take to get where you're going?

Hey all, thinking about trying to hitchhike up to NC from central FL, really want to get up there but don't have a way rn. Anyone have any advice or know how long I should expect it to take? It's a 10ish hour drive sure but obviously I have no control over who, when, or where exactly.

N'hésitez pas à me contacter !

Anchorage to Denali NP

Im possibly planning on a trip from the airport in Anchorage to denali NP and back. Sometime in late august

What do I need to be wary of on the trip, any tips from those that have done the route before? I dont see a lot of things written about the trip online but Im having a hard time believing there arent a lot of people that have done it.

I have a fair bit of experience hitchhiking but only shorter point to points around the east coast, and I am very comfortable in all aspects of backpacking.

Edit- I would like to get it done in 2 weeks but Im fine walking stints of the highway in-between rides.

Looking for tent/hammock advice!

Hey everyone,
I'm a beginner hitchhiker and have only ever done short-distance trips that didn't require improvising a place to stay, however this summer I decided to take on the challenge.
That being said as well as the designated date to set out onto this adventure closing in, I still find myself having a very hard time deciding on what shelter option to pick.
This is going to be a serious investment and the multitude of options has me constantly dreading I might regret buying any specific model I end up choosing.
That's why I come to ask you, the more experienced hitchhikers, for your personal recommendations on tents, hammocks and other shelter equipment you have found useful on your trips.
I am very much open to other general hitchhiking tips as well!

EDIT: I know it's fairly late but some I wanted to make some clarifications:
- I am based in Europe
- my budget isn't the biggest

Need onward ticket out of Panama – nothing works, need help

Need onward ticket from Panama – tried everything, nothing works

Flying Wingo Colombia to Panama. They're strict about proof of onward travel. Need a real ticket I can cancel and get actual cash back. Here's what I tried:

Tica Bus – terms say "no reembolsable." Non-refundable. Dead.

Bookaway – found a "Refundable" bus ticket for $322. Support confirmed refund is voucher only, not cash. Dead.

Copa Airlines – Economy Full fare says "REFUND ANYTIME, NO CHARGE." Sounds perfect until you read reviews. People say they deny refunds if you're not a resident of the departure country. Complaints everywhere. Don't trust them.

LATAM – zero passenger flights out of Panama. Checked myself. Dead.

OnwardTicket dummy ticket – Reddit says Wingo actually verifies if it's a real paid ticket. Too risky.

What actually works? Budget: zero loss, or max a few bucks. Anyone got a proven method?

±10.000km trip around Europe as a first solo experience

Hello all. I want to do a round trip around Europe hitchhiking/backpacking and the route I made looks like heaps of fun. I would cross most European countries, but I'm inexperienced in solo travel and I'm wondering if it's feasible. Right now I'm working 4 days a week with 1 day of school, and the work is needed for my study. The contract ends in August and I'll finish my study in July. I want to travel with everything I have on my back, hopefully around autumn, but I don't really have a clue what I need, what to expect for distance travelled a day or really anything. I came to this subreddit looking for advice. I have been watching YouTube videos about life skills, but never put them to practice. Could anyone help steer me in the right direction for the journey?

Zagreb to Belgrade today

Average waiting time, 50 mn to go from Zagreb to Slavonski Brod, then around 30-40 minutes to ask people around for a lift to Serbia or Belgrade. Most cars were full so that's why it took so long.

Will stay a day to explore Belgrade then moving to North Macedonia and Greece.

I hitchhiked to travel across America at fifteen in the early 1970s ( the tail end of the counterculture era)

I’ve been writing about those years recently, but I’m just as interested in hearing from others—what was your experience like back then, or what stories have you heard?

Looking for a new backpack. Is AtomPack any good?

I've been looking at buying a new backpack for a while now, mainly because my current one doesn't seem to be big enough to fit me properly (had it quite a few years and the hip belt doesnt seem to go low enough).

One brand I've been looking at is AtomPack, I know these are mainly targeted at through hiking, which is something I want to try some day when I have time, however in the mean time are these good backpacks for general travel? Are they durable? Don't want to spend that much money on something that won't last long.

Feel like freedom

Some of you might remember riding in the back of a pickup truck on the highway. But then they outlawed it. Sadly some will never know the sweet spot behind the cab where wind swirls around you.

What's the most danger you've beenin while HH or vagabonding?

I've asked people the weirdest but I feel like most dangerous would get some good stories too when I was camping on the outskirts of Marseille I left a pizza box near my hammock and at 3AM I woke up to hear this deep grunge the exact opposite noise you want to be hearing I shuffled around trying to get a look and that's when I realised there were three wild boars one of them was massive and when I moved around they started getting all pissed off and jumpy running around almost roaring I tried staying as still as possible trying not too piss them off I was trying too ask my ai what to do but I had no uses left until I got premium so I used the free duck duck go one and it was telling me the worst advice possible telling me unzip the hammock get out and crawl away on my stomach I was think that's gotta be the stupidest shit I've ever heard why would I get on there level and move really slowly I just tried sitting still till they went away 2 of them left after a couple hours but the big alpha male one was right next to me I was trying to breath as quiet as possible but I think it could hear me because I had a blocked nose eventually it charged at my hammock but went underneath my feet because the hammock was curved more than it should have been but if he charged a few inches left I would have probably been crippled I can't lie it had me feeling like a pinyatta just swinging there most vunrable I've ever felt but also the most alive I've ever felt but I don't think having adrenaline for 3 hours is very health tbh

Hitchhiking in Italy : my experience

Following this discussion: https://www.reddit.com/r/hitchhiking/comments/1ta8jcy/hitchhiking\_in\_italy\_this\_week/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=mweb3x&utm\_name=mweb3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button

I did Milano/Bergamo to Trieste : 370km in one day

I don't want to "ragebait" but it was actually really easy in comparison to what most of the people said ! Honestly everything went so smoothly ! I know a lot of people here had bad experiences in Italy but I want to cheer the Italians because they were actually so cool with me. I had one of my most beautiful hitchhiking day in a country I was really scared to hitchhike. I just hope people can understand it's not impossible and it can actually be fun to hitchhike in Italy.

Few things to consider :

_I speak Italian

_I never used my thumb or the sign on the highway (I always talked to the people)

_I didn't see one single police car in all the stations I went to, and if they were here, what could they do? I'm just standing with a backpack talking to people calmly. They wouldn't even notice me.

_I might look like a traditional european guy with a moustache and a nice hat 🎩 look is important especially here imo

GETTING OUT OF MILANO

I started today from Milano, a friend from this sub suggested to hitchhike from Orio-al-Serio airport near Bergamo. It's 12€ to go there so it might not be interesting for some people (it's literally the price to take a bus to Venezia e.g.) but I wanted to stick to the hitchhiking plan lol. I just used thumb and board VERONA/VENEZIA. It's not on the highway so not illegal.

I was stubborn because I wanted a ride directly to Verona so I can go directly to Venezia after (I was kind of stressed to go on the highway so better to just be there one time) but I have been offered 4 rides to Brescia, the first one after 15mn. So it's not even a matter of speaking Italian or not. People did stop. I struggled more in Romania which was known to be a paradise...

TO VENEZIA AND TRIESTE

There is not much to say : I talked to the people nicely and the people were nice with me. I talked to a lot of people, everyone was cool with me, really. I usually waited around 20-30 minutes. I have stick to the highway all along.

First was an Indian (thumb and board) but all the three people that stopped before for the same destination were Italians.

Second was Italian, looked quite fancy and not the guy who would usually take hitchhikers.

Third was Italian, also a bit fancy but quite normal guy.

Fourth a Slovene guy in a cool vintage van

Fifth a Ukrainian family that dropped me directly in the city center of Trieste despite they were going for Rijeka.

LANGUAGE

My golden phrase was :

Ciao, scusa il disturbo. Per caso saresti andando in direzione di [town]?

Hey, sorry to interrupt you. By any chance are you going to [town]?

And then, I explain quickly my travel project.

IMO it is necessary to learn some Italian if you want to hitchhike in Italy, considering : talking to people = no problems. If you speak to the people in English I think most of Italians just don't want to understand. Italians actually really appreciate when you speak or try to speak their language.

Anyway, I hope this can help some people. Again I don't want to make it sound like it will be always easy, but IMO it's far from the hell people described
