Hitchhiking across main europe countries
Good afternoon, everyone. I’ll be arriving in Lisbon on July 13 and plan to spend three months backpacking through Europe. I’ll start in Lisbon and plan to travel to Prague, passing through Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Germany, ending my trip in Prague. I’ll be hitchhiking most of the way and taking a few bus or train trips when I can find good deals, since I’m on a tight budget. I plan to camp in the small towns I pass through and spend 2–3 days in hostels in the big cities to explore them before continuing my journey. Any recommendations, warnings, help, tips, or opinions are very welcome and will be a great help. I hope to meet other travelers and enjoy the European summer. Thank you all!
Girl we gave lift to had to sit on my lap
This is being going on my mind from a time Me and my friends (4 male) went to Munnar from Kochi, while coming from the top hill point it was around 11:00 PM at night , we were in a car (i20), 2 of my friend at the driver and passenger seat, while me and my friend at the rear seat, we saw some people standing at the corner of the road and park to next was a jeep which appears to have been not starting, usually we won’t stop but my friend saw stopped because he saw some girls there. There jeep had some issue in the engine and there would be no tow facility and they had a booked a villa in the main Munnar town, and they won’t find any other vehicle as well because it was around 20 KM, from the main town. They were 6 people 4 female and 2 male (they were office colleagues/friends), 1 male decided that he will stay at the jeep only meanwhile if we could offer other lift to the Munnar town the other boy can come up with some mechanic or someone to get the other guy. They seemed genuine and well off and the girls in their group was quite good looking, but we said we don’t have much space but we can adjust, so at the back seat me and my friend were already sitting, the male guy sat at the back next to me and next to him sat on the rear end another girl so we four people sat at the back seat and it was quite congested, now one girl (most attractive and hot) sat on their male friend lap, the other girl sat on the female friend lap and their was one more girl who was not that attractive she was left, now i thought she will sit on my lap (it’s better than no one sitting on my lap) but since she can’t come in between the girls who were sitting on the laps had to adjust and shift one next to their seat right and the girl I was eyeing on the most, the most attractive girl among them sat on my lap, I still can’t forget the moment, in the next 2 minutes. I had a boner which I definitely know was too hard to not notice but the girl on my lap kept straight face, I started talking to her slowly (in seducing voice) like were she’s from and what she does and she had to keep a straight face and answer, I would say the best 45 minutes of my life. We reached and as soon as she left my lap there was a huge visible boner (probably one of the biggest of all time) on my pant. I tried to hide it and get away with it, My friends teased me and I kept saying I was just being helpful.
Ahh I miss that time. I didn’t asked her insta, later I sent that girl LinkedIn request because I knew her college (she told) and she accepted but nothing after that.
How is the Caucasus region for hitchhiking? Particularly Georgia and Armenia.

Hitchhiking Paris to London
Will it work? Not sure how the ferry/tunnel works or how strict they are about car passengers. It will be my first time hitchhiking because I need to get to London on tuesday and prices for everything else are too much for me. Thank you!!
1000+ Official Hitchhiking Spots
Building up on my earlier post. Thanks to adoption of the tagging by French municipalities we hit above 1000 of signed hitchhiking spots on OSM.
In France they often come in the form of Rezo Pouce signs.

Biggest personal hitch
Think I’ve mentioned it before here but I’ll be heading from Scotland down to Thailand come the start of August.
Been hitching for a while solo but it’s always fun to have a friend, just if anyone was heading that way.
Will be the biggest hitch I’ve made, hopefully can get there by the end of the year.
Been at it for a while now
Questions about my 1-2 week hitchhike in July. (Odense, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris)
I have a week or two to hitchhike from Odense in Denmark to Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris and back in mid July. I have a few questions about it.
- Is it realistic for me to sleep overnight with my tarp and my sleeping bag and pad, if I find myself at night outside the cities / on the road?
- Is there a chance my things get stolen when I sleep in the wilderness, and how can I make it so they don't get stolen?
- Is it realistic to actually go see all these three cities within one week? If not, how long do you think it will take?
- Is it possible to find hostels on the day I know I will arrive in the city?
- Is there anything else I should think about before going?
First time hitch hiking today!!
I've been meaning to try hitch hiking for a little while now. My dad told me I'd be out there all day and never get picked up. I am really tall, pretty fat, and kinda ugly, so I believed this too. Today, I had ridden the bus to cracker barrel about 11 miles from home, and had to wait 40 minutes for the bus. I figured that since the on ramp for the interstate was right by the bus stop, I would try and get a ride for 30 minutes to the bus station, and if I didn't get a ride, I would just ride the bus home. I didn't think I would, but I did get a ride very quickly. In the span of 4 minutes, a car drove by me and honked their horn at me, someone stuck a peace sign out the window, and then a guy picked me up. I was just gonna try and ask for the exit right by the bus station, but this guy asked where I lived and offered to drive me the whole way home. It went very smoothly, and I can definitely say I am pretty confident. I've been thinking of hitch hiking across the country, but I think I need to get in better shape first. It was a lot of fun and hell, I might even hitch hike some more tomorrow just for fun. It felt like gambling almost. Told my dad I didn't get molested, and he told me to show more leg next time. But yeah, pretty stoked about that today.
Crazy and spontaneous HH subreddit meeting in Georgia 🇬🇪
A French guy commented on my previous post saying he's in the same place so we met ! Kinda crazy thing! He's now hitchhiking all the way back to France! Good luck gros!
Even more crazy with low probability: Dutch guy came to the hostel and after having a good talk he said : "Wait, aren't you the hitchhiker guy on Reddit with a broken arm?" It blew my mind hahahaha
All in the same day !!! This is like really crazy
First solo hitchhiking trip: Berlin 🇩🇪 → Tirana 🇦🇱 (~1,850 km) with €0 transport budget – looking for Balkan advice!
Hey everyone,
This summer I’m attempting something I’ve wanted to do for a long time: my first ever solo hitchhiking trip.
The plan is to get from Berlin to Tirana (around 1,850 km) almost entirely by hitchhiking. Once I arrive in Albania I’ll spend about a week exploring the country before flying home. I also already have a return flight booked for about two weeks after my departure, so the timeline is fixed.
Current route:
Berlin → Prague → Budapest → Belgrade → Niš → Prishtina (Kosovo) → Tirana
The challenge I’ve set for myself is simple:
Reach Albania without spending any money on transportation or accommodation. The only things I’m planning to pay for before arriving are food and other essentials. Once I’m in Albania, the challenge is over and I’m happy to spend money on accommodation, buses, activities, etc.
For accommodation on the way, I’m planning to sleep in a hammock with a bug net and tarp whenever possible, using hostels only if something goes completely wrong or the weather makes it necessary.
I’m 20 years old, traveling solo, and this will be my first hitchhiking experience. I’ve spent weeks researching borders, safety, gear, insurance, and Hitchwiki, but I know that nothing beats hearing from people who’ve actually done it.
A few things I’d love to hear your thoughts on:
- How difficult is Serbia for hitchhiking these days?
- Would you recommend going through Kosovo or North Macedonia, and why?
- Are there any roads, border crossings, or areas you’d avoid?
- Is sleeping in a hammock a realistic plan along this route?
- What’s one mistake you made on your first long hitchhiking trip that you’d warn me about?
- Is there anything you’d definitely add or remove from my gear?
Current gear:
- Backpack
- Hammock + bug net
- Sleeping bag
- Sleeping pad
- Rain poncho
- Water bottle
- Headlamp
- Power bank
- Small lock
- Dry bags
- Money belt
- Mosquito spray
- Offline maps & translator
- Basic clothing for around two weeks
And some more small stuff…
I’m also considering bringing a small souvenir from home with me for drivers or occasionally offering to buy them a coffee at a rest stop. It’s not something I see as a “payment,” more just a gesture of appreciation. That said, I’m still unsure if this is actually appropriate or even practical while hitchhiking, so I’d be curious how others handle situations like this.
One thing I found during my research is that some drivers in the Balkans are reluctant to take hitchhikers across borders, so my plan is to get dropped off before the border and find someone who’s already crossing legally. Has that matched your experience?
I’d also love to hear your best hitchhiking stories from the Balkans whether they were amazing, hilarious, or complete disasters. Those kinds of experiences are honestly one of the main reasons I’m doing this trip.
Thanks! Hopefully I’ll be able to come back here afterwards and share how it went.
Official Hitchhiking Spots in the Editor
We have signed hitchhiking places in the OSM editor now. This is great for making hitchhiking more visible and help map those locations :)
Wanna hitchhike from California to Louisiana somehow
But I’ve never hitchhiked , any advice?
What's the likelihood of having to do sexual favors hitchhiking from Tennessee to Phoenix?
I'm looking to hitchhike to Phoenix from near Memphis, but I've not done any hitchhiking before. I know the saying "ass, grass or cash" but not sure how literal it is and if it still applies these days. I don't have any money (which is why I'm planning to hitchhike). Is there going to be an expectation of sexual favors along the way? How would I know if someone wants that (or something else) versus someone just lending a hand?
I'm a 40-year old guy, by the way. I'm sure there are considerable gender differences. I'd say I'm about average looking.
