Does anyone know if the city of holland is planning any watch parties/get togethers for the world cup? I know the curragh has announced they will be having the games on, but are there any other places planning and organizing community events?
I’ll be in Holland for a few days in July, what do you think of the list of restaurants I’ve put together. What am I missing that’s a must try?
-Bowermans on 8th
-Douglas Root Beer Barrel
-Good Time donuts
-Boatwerks
-New holland brewpub
Willing to travel outside of just Holland for good restaurants - GR, Saugatuck, Douglas, etc.
Looking for artists to participate in the next art melts ice artist market at Bluestocking! Please note that artists are donating their full sales to anti organizations (lighthouse and the lakeshore rapid response), so you will not be making money but rather fundraising. Feel free to message me for any more info and if anyone is interested in donating their time that would also be an option. Thanks!
Looking to buy our next home and currently in a Sable house.
The area we are looking in has a ton of new construction from Eastbrook, Interra, JTB, Buffum, Bosgraaf, Curt Moran, Baumann, and AE. I’ve seen reviews from several years ago on many of these builders, but looking for more up to date feedback. In all I just want to put my family in a home that will last. Who do you recommend for quality, safety and efficiency?
I recently visited Lazy Cat Lounge (6674 Blair Lane) just 5 mins north of Holland, and I wanted to put the word out about this place. Wendee, the owner, needs our help. She’s not getting nearly as many visitors as she needs to keep the lounge funded. There’s also lots of very friendly and super loving cats there that would love to go to their forever home. I know Harbor Humane is the top dog around Holland for adopting from a shelter, but let’s not allow Lazy Cat Lounge to fall through the cracks. It’s only $10 to visit and it’s not for just an hour, you can stay as long as you’d like. Every dollar helps Wendee to help these wonderful cats.

My husband and I (27F, 26M) are considering a move to western MI in the next year and hoping to find our forever spot. We will be visiting next week to scope it out (flying into Chicago, staying in Grand Rapids). We've lived in Minnesota and Texas and are really hoping to find somewhere that has a great balance of city amenities and access to nature (similar to the outer Minneapolis or Duluth area). Ideally, we would be within a 2/2.5 hour drive of Chicago or Detroit and in a town/city between 20,000 and 60,000 population with a good public school system. We want to be involved in our community and not too isolated. We sit in the middle politically. We both work in healthcare with a household income around $300-400k with an eventual house budget of $600k-1m (more interest in having land than having square footage fwiw). We’re really interested in Holland itself, but want to know where you would recommend in the surrounding area!

Anybody interested in sandlot style wood bat baseball? A couple months back I tried to start a 40+ baseball team which did not work out. Much of the feedback I got, especially from my own friends, was that people haven’t played in years (or at all) and didn’t feel confident or comfortable. I also had several people in their 30’s (or younger) say they’d love to play. So I started looking into ways to make that all possible.
That led me to the sandlot revolution movement (https://sandlotrevolution.com).
Basically people are putting together laid back baseball clubs that are welcoming and inclusive to all skill levels. Some are big enough to have multiple teams to play each other, some just have one team that plays other clubs and some just have pickup games or get together to hit and play catch.
I’m trying to put together something like that here on the lakeshore. I’m calling it the Broken Crown Baseball and Social Club. I have no expectations of it being anything more than a social club of people throwing and having bating and fielding practice or scrimmaging if we get enough. Just a way for people to just have fun and hang out. Open to adults of all ages and skill levels. Really the only requirement I have is not being a jerk and being open to helping those who might need help. I’m a bit rusty as it is so we can help each other.
Since my post a few days ago I got in contact with the recreation department of Holland. I’ve been working it out to tentatively use one of the fields at Matt Urban a few times this summer. I’m also under the impression that the field at Schultz Park (and maybe Beery Field) down in Douglas is first come, first serve when it isn’t reserved. So between those options something should be able to be figured out.
Some links which make this seem way more formal than it actually is.

1870: Construction begins on the wooden beacon light with a $4,000 appropriation from Congress.
1880: A vicious storm (the same that sunk the Alpena) damages the pier and shifts the beacon light.
1902: A new 42-foot tall steel beacon is erected in place of the wooden structure. The new height increased visibility of the light from 11 to 13 miles.
1904: December 22, Pier and beacon light damaged in storm. The tower was dismantled and stored, and then erected on a temporary wooden foundation the next spring.
1907: A 2-story, steam-powered fog signal building, with quarters for two assistant keepers, is erected adjacent to the steel beacon as an audible navigational aid. The building was used to generate steam for a 10" diameter fog whistle. Sixty-nine-year-old Keeper Van Regenmorter was still serving as keeper during the construction of the fog signal building, but he apparently decided to end his thirty-seven years of service rather than learn to run the new equipment.
1932: The beacon light and fog signal are electrified, and the following year an air whistle replaced the old steam fog whistle.
1936: A tower is added atop the fog signal building to consolidate the light and fog signal into one building, creating the Holland Harbor South Pierhead Lighthouse. The metal pierhead tower was shipped to Calumet, where it is still in service on the south end of the breakwater.
1956: The lighthouse is painted red to comply with new regulations designating red navigational aids on the right side when entering a harbor.
I am spending a solo trip in Saugatuck in the near future and was looking for recs for : coffee shop, bar, a good dinner spot, best hike around the area, and best beach to pop up for the day and watch the sun come down.
Any help is appreciated. There's like not a solid Saugatuck sub reddit 😞
Free flower shop is up! Also some free hyacinth plants if anyone wants them. Located on Burke Ave, the side street where EVCC/old north side family video is.
My husband and I are looking for a place to rent in the Saugatuck/Douglas/Fennville area this summer and thought we’d see if anyone has leads, recommendations, or creative ideas!
We need to be in the area July 3–6 for a family birthday celebration, but we’re flexible and open to:
• just those few days
• a week
• a month
• or even something longer-term
We live in Chicago and both have the flexibility to work remotely, so we’re open to unique setups — guest houses, cottages, farm stays, cabins, carriage houses, month-to-month rentals, etc.
We also have 2 nature loving dogs, so pet-friendly is important.
Ideal areas:
- Saugatuck
- Douglas
- Fennville
…but open to nearby hidden gems too.
If you know of anything available (private rental/sublet etc.) or have suggestions, we’d really appreciate it. Thank you!
