Tips for a meet and sniff?

I may have found a couple of local people interested in having a meet and sniff to experience each other’s collections! But I’m having trouble finding a good list of best practices. Here’s what I’m thinking so far:

 1. Outdoor space is best so as not to bother others

 2. Limit to 6-10 scents to minimize olfactory fatigue

 3. Provide testing strips, pens, and plastic bags so folks can take dry, labeled strips home if they want (I often sniff testing strips for days)

 4. Provide water and coffee grounds to help clear olfactory fatigue

 5. Having food is good so people will linger and chat — but only after the sniffing is finished

 6. Bring some samples to swap or share?

What am I not thinking of?

Has anyone hosted a very small informal group like this? How did it go?

We have got to move away from Fragrantica

Hello fragrance folks and fiends. I have been around the fragrance subs on here for several years now and recently have began to see a concerning trend regarding the use of the fragrance site Fragrantica. People have been using it to post their recommendations, SotD, and to look for fragrances.

I thought I would take a moment to highlight some information about the site to allow people a more informed look at what fragrance sites they choose to use, especially as newcomers arrive all the time.

First, Fragrantica is run by extreme right-wing conservatives who use the site to push their political ideology (ie. posting and promoting fragrances created by Trump, posting about the death of Charlie Kirk on their main page, and their outspoken anti-Ukraine, pro-Russia sentiment.) By using their site, you are providing them with ad revenue.

Speaking of ads, Fragrantica’s site is so heavily bogged down by them the page will have trouble working properly. The layout is messy and not as professional as others. I have not had this problem on other fragrance sites.

Lastly, and probably most directly associated with fragrances, Fragrantica FREQUENTLY has incorrect information about fragrances such as incorrect notes and notes added that do not exist in the fragrance description or on the manufacturer’s site.

Of course there are other options. I am not representative of any fragrance site or app.

I would recommend Parfumo; their site and app look much cleaner and I have never encountered an ad. It’s easy to use and has a variety of features such as adding your current and prospective collections, wish-lists, etc., searching fragrances by note and olfactory families, adding your SotD, and even a profiler for quickly analyzing the notes or fragrance types you have most in your collections.

I’ve heard many people say Parfumo doesn’t have as many perfumes or reviews, but I’ve never had trouble finding what I needed. At the same time, more reviews will be added as more people use the app or site.

Just wanted to post a PSA for anyone who was unaware so people can make more informed choice for finding fragrances.

Exciting news from Crow & Pebble - sale and a new collection!

Not affiliated with C&P, just a fan ☺️

From the email:

Hi there! It's been a little while since I last posted - sorry about that! We underwent a little move and were very busy catching up on orders after that move.

And now, we're taking a break! For the first time in a few years, the studio will be closed as we take a vacation. During this time, orders will not be processed and will begin their 14 working day turnaround time when we return. Orders made up to the 20th of August are guaranteed to be processed and posted before closing, and we will make every effort to get those made up to the 22nd completed beforehand, but cannot make any guarantees.

The online storefront will remain OPEN during our holiday and for those willing to wait on their order for the extra time, we offer a thank you for your patience in the form of a sale code! From August 25th at midnight to September 18th at 11:59pm, UK time, you can take 22% off your entire order with the code JETSET22 ! This code will apply to all orders valued over £10 to any destination. Our regular free shipping thresholds will still apply on the discounted order value.

During this time, I will be checking e-mails intermittently and will prioritize any urgent customer enquiries, but please bear with me if you are waiting a little longer than usual for a response.

Our regular seasonal rotation will still happen on September 1st, so the Fall Scents will come back into stock and the Summer ones will go out of stock partway through the sale, so please keep that in mind!

FURTHERMORE, we are excited to announce that a new collection of perfumes will be released just prior to the holiday begining. These WILL be available in the sale as well. More details to come in the next few days!

FOR EU27 CUSTOMERS: I know we had closed shipping to the EU temporarily when the new rules came into force. I will be able to reintroduce shipping to many, but not all EU destinations. For these countries, we will be able to offer Tracked Shipping only, but we will be able to collect the VAT, and the new small order duty on your behalf, therefore avoiding the enormous handling that are often incurred in order to clear customs. So the shipping costs and upfront prices paid will be rather higher, but it should save a lot of hassle and unexpected fees. More details on this also to come very shortly.

What are your favorite indie cake accords?

In a gourmand-y mood and I was wondering what perfumes you all love that feature cake. I’m pretty sure I’ve only tried one so far: Vampire Wife by Sorce. Still not sure I love it, I need to sample it again.

Of course, any flavor is good 🍰

Any perfume orders you’re waiting for / considering buying?

I am anxiously awaiting my Sucrerie sample order, and there are a few I’m especially excited about:

Morari - In these Ivied Halls

(Pencil Shavings, Blackberry, Black Tea, Clematis, Ivy)

I love anything with an academia theme and if I like this I could definitely see it becoming a fall staple this year. I know I like the smell of pencil shavings but I never thought about how it’d smell on my skin.

Pearfat - Sister Hildegard

(Blood Orange, Elemi, Flecks Of Dust Against Stained Glass, Bowl Of Milk, Sacred Incense, Old Wood, Cyclamen, Camphor, Spikenard)

I can’t conceptualize how this smells at all but I like the vibes. Honestly I read a book awhile ago that featured Hildegard and that was a big reason why I picked it.

Cirrus - Parakeet

(Fizzy grapefruit soda, freshly picked daisies, tiny forget-me-nots, and the powdery sweet down feathers of a well groomed parakeet)

This just sounds bright and delightful. I’ve had one hit with Cirrus so far and a few misses so I wanted to branch out and try them more.

What about you? What perfumes are you awaiting in the mail or thinking about ordering?

Maison Des Animaux - 20% Off Sale

FYI for all you indie perfume folks… Maison des Animaux is currently having a 20% off sale right now!

They are also including samples of upcoming releases in every order. Getting a chance to try upcoming scents is always fun for me!!

The upcoming releases are:
Bossa Nova - fluffy tobacco marshmallow
• Cult of Kindness - Lemonade, white chocolate, orange blossom
• Plus maybe some others including champaca and carrot that have been teased??

I’m going to be THRILLED if they release a champaca scent! I’m a big champaca fan and would love to see more of it in EDP indie releases.

Just wanted to share in case anyone else has been wanting to try Maison des Animaux or is interested in what they have coming up! I find they’re a very likeable and approachable house which means they’re my go-to for gifting.

Beltane is probably my favorite bolder scent from them. It’s a really dark and smokey vanilla rather than airy and sweet.

I made a previous post about all their vanillas if anyone is curious: https://www.reddit.com/r/Indiemakeupandmore/comments/1s3n25p/a_notso_authoritative_guide_to_maison_des_animaux/

Olympic Orchids Tucson

This one was earlier known as Arizona. It opens dry, piney, almost medicinal. The opening might remind one slightly of Eucalyptus. After 20 mins it moves to dry woods, the woods feel like the bark of a tree. I love that texture and ruggedness. It's an intimate scent, non-intrusive to those around u. The drydown is piney rugged resins. Longevity isn't the best, probably 5-6 hrs at most. But damn I love that textured wood.

A Fist Full of Fyrinnae (A stumbling review of the August 2026 scents)

A Santa sized sack full of savory scents just hit my mailbox today, so keep that in mind as I go through these! Also keep in mind that I’ve never done a full review like this before, so be kind!

A little about my perfume preferences before we get started:

Likes: Gourmands, but not too sugary sweet, paper, citrus, realistic aquatic or ozone notes, potting soil, and a banging atmospheric (which is why Fyrinnae is one of my favorite houses. It is witchcraft how they can create a whole tapestry of memories with just one scent).

Dislikes: Not really a super, heady floral girlie. Incense is an occasional friend. Licorice, anise, blood, and I do not get along. Super resinous scents and anything heavy on vetiver, patchouli, labdanum, or benzoin will have me sending them straight to the other side of the bed.

Equinox (Soft amber [pinus succinefera/oleum succini], Himalayan cedarwood, labdanum, frankincense, ambrette, and mimosa)

 • Bottle sniff, this is dank for me as a gourmand girlie. The labdanum and frankincense are dutiful brothers holding the hand of their sister amber, who is casually following along. Take those three and pour them over the most beautiful cut of fresh cedarwood that has been pulled out from under a pile of pollen. The cedar tries its best to bring attention to its rich, dry woodiness, but by the finish everything transforms into this balsamic, resin-glazed piece of wood.

Glass Noodles (Stir fried glass noodles and vegetables, browned tofu, ginger, lemongrass, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Alternatively, this is close to Tom Yum.)

 • This scent leaked in my package, and let me tell you, the force is strong with the lemongrass. A bold, aromatic broth kicks things off, an umami queen strutting Tyra Banks-style down a runway. Pan-seared tofu has soaked up the nuttiness of toasted sesame oil and the salty richness of soy sauce; the three combined create an intimacy that pulls you in for a deeper inhale. Ginger is right there too, adding its signature bite while the lemongrass remains firmly in the forefront. In the bowl, glass noodles form a slick, translucent mound, surrounded by thinly mandolined vegetables and little beads of oil shimmering across the broth. By the drydown, a noticeable saltiness lingers on my skin. The only thing I'm wishing for is a few fresh stalks of cilantro to scatter about.

Hotter Chocolate ((Xocolatl) A hot drink of slightly sweetened dark chocolate with a few slivers of dried chili pepper (does not contain actual capsicum/capsaicin) and tiny pinch of ground vanilla bean.)

 • Here little gourmand, gourmand. Gremlin bottle sniff, mmmmm, this is Willy Wonka level perfection. One of those fancy Whole Foods dark chocolate bars you chopped up and melted earlier. I could honestly just sit here and sniff the bottle. On skin, that initial dark chocolate shifts into fatty, buttery cocoa butter, losing most of its dark chocolate signature and becoming noticeably creamier. The vanilla never really separates itself as vanilla extract or vanilla bean, but I think it's quietly helping round everything out and pushing that creamy cocoa butter impression. There is a slightly powdery feel, almost like the texture of a finely ground seasoning, but I'm not really getting the dried chili pepper yet. No noticeable peppery contrast or little flash of heat against the chocolate. This is fresh out of the mail though, so that may change after it has had some time to rest.

Inferno (Thai Basil, Thai Peppers and Bell Peppers, Vegan Oyster Sauce, Tofu Cubes, Sesame Oil, Brown Sugar, Hint of Garlic)

 • Hot Ones? Am I gonna be able to hit this one without crying tears of pain? Despite the name Inferno, there is no need for a mouthful of ice cream here, Benito. This is what should be in one of those little bottles you turn upside down and tap a few drops from onto the Glass Noodles, like reaching for the sriracha or hoisin to doctor up your bowl. YESSSSSS! Layer these two up to level up, my friends. I am about to DoorDash some Thai tonight. I am a hoe for oyster sauce, and it is rolling around with the Thai peppers, basil, and garlic so damn well. The Thai basil has that big, leafy, pungent smell I love, with a little licorice underneath. There is an urgency you come to expect from the Thai peppers, but as they meld with the milder, watery flesh of the bell peppers, our Girl on Fire is effectively doused. As everything settles, the brown sugar that was there all along finally gets a little room to show itself. Savory sisters, unite!

Lantern Light (Dark Bittersweet Labdanum, Frankincense, Cool Earthiness of Wet Clay, Slightly Burned Sugar, Patchouli, Oud, Bitter Orange, Cypress Wood)

 • We are finally out of the kitchen. I don't like to sex fragrances, but this initially has a cool, more masculine feel. Fyrinnae has a way of blurring those lines so well though, that it quickly comes back around to unisex for me. That intro of subtle citrus and cypress wood gives me the toe tingles. Labdanum and frankincense are distant, twice-removed cousins from our Equinox pair, but these two are Southern genteel gentlemen, keeping things much more restrained. Heading into the middle, things get a little Ghost. We are at the pottery wheel, hands deep in wet clay, damp and slightly salty. Molly, you in danger girl! And apparently Salt Bae has joined us, because into the clay pot we just made goes an aggressive amount of raw sugar, landing helter-skelter on the now-softening patchouli and oud.

Maple, Aspen, and Oak (Hinoki wood, caramel, oakwood, copaiba balsam, vetiver, patchouli, bergamot, and benzoin)

 • No, ma'am. Vetiver, patchouli, balsam AND benzoin. Y'all know that's my separate side of the bed crew. Anticipating this to go left real quick. Wait. Annnnnddd...... bursts through the door like a woman in a Mexican telenovela {gasps in Spanish} ¡Quéeeeee bueeeeno! I let that list of notes send my imagination barreling in the wrong direction, but instead, we are in this lovely forest. Not a realistic forest per se, more like Disney's Flowers and Trees, where the trees are moving, singing, dancing. It's the fantasy fragrance version of trees rather than literal bark and lumber. Once dry, my separate sides of the bed crew finally shows up, with caramel silently slipping in beside them. It's less a noticeable sweetness and more a thick, viscous texture, acting as the pillow for this crew, if you will. Thankfully, everyone knows their place, staying close to skin in their room of darkness. I'm holding off on a final verdict with this one. Right now it feels a little translucent, and I have a strong feeling some rest will whirl this into a whole other beast with more body and definition.

Phở Chay (Vegan pho with a mushroom-based broth and seitan slices, seasoned with star anise, coriander, ginger, cardamom, and onion. The mushroom note is subtle and does not dominate.)

 • The star anise is straight twerking on this one, watch out. Drop it like it's hot, drop it like it's hot. MMMMM. Gia Vị Nấu Phở in its cute little cloth satchel, simmering away in the broth pot. I have never eaten seitan, so I can't help you guys out there. The Phở broth is on fleek though, fully committed to expressing its inner child, authentically and unapologetically. I'd love to see a challenge of someone wearing all the kitchen scents at once. In an elevator. With other people. Preferably coworkers.

September Morning (Tuberose, oakmoss, linden blossom, red apple, jasmine sambac, myrrh, juniper wood, tonka, and sandalwood.)

 • Continuing our outdoor adventures. Inhale, floral. Inhale again. That's rain for sure. Plot twist, after all that food and forest, we're taking this adventure inside. This is some Caress-meets-Calgon goodness, slipping into a bubble bath for some me time. Tuberose, jasmine, and linden blossom float up around me like I'm some floral goddess as I soak. I rough myself up with my favorite apple-scented scrub, while the smell of rain and the outdoors drifts in through the cracked bathroom window.

Steamy (Freshly steamed basmati rice. Pure hot basmati. Designed to wear on its own or layered with other gourmand fragrances.)

 • Hear me out. The rice has that slightly scorched quality from the bottom of a rice cooker, toasted and crisp around the edges. There's something special here, though, and I'm curious to see what a little rest pulls forward.

Other New Scents

Taqueria Enceladus (Crisp Shredded Iceberg Lettuce, Cilantro, Diced Fresh Tomato, Taco Seasoning, Warm Crispy Corn Tortilla Bowl)

 • Straight from the bottle, that crisp, crunchy smell of a tortilla bowl, with that baked corn underneath, dusted in taco seasoning. On skin? Taco Cabana. Cilantro, fresh tomato, taco seasoning, iceberg lettuce doing whatever iceberg lettuce does because let's be real, it doesn't really have a smell, and that warm crispy tortilla bowl holding the whole thing together. This is a taco bowl. On period. And this is what I mean when I say Fyrinnae excels at atmospherics. You aren't smelling something inspired by a taco bowl. Your ass is at Taco Cabana.

 • Jimothy (Limited edition. No sample size available.) Fir needles, spruce needles, summer dry grasses, dirt, peeling bark, and a mild sweetness.

And finally...the one y'all have been waiting for. Drum roll, please...

JIMOTHY.

You're a dog living your best life, rolling around in a slightly raised bed of brown, dusty, dried dirt with a tinge of old mulch. The mound is courtesy of your hooman, who raked the yard but apparently had no intention of actually picking up the pile. There are fir and spruce needles mixed in, some already on their way to death's door, while others are still sharp, pungent and GREEN. Lean in for a sniff and SLAP, needles to the face. Scattered throughout, dried grass clippings add that vegetal, straw-like je ne sais quoi to the pile. There is a little sweetness here too, peeled bits of bark still tacky with sap, getting all up in your fur as you roll about. And just as the commitment to really piss your parents off has you getting deeper into those rolls, Jimothy high-steps through an adjacent pile, trotting across the yard before beelining towards the fence line.

---

In order - Most Favorite: (Would shield these with my body if a bomb went off): Inferno, Steamy, September Morning, Jimothy and Lantern Light.

Like, But Not Love: (Would call them, but secretly hope they don’t pick up the phone so I could send text messages instead): Maple, Aspen and Oak, Glass Noodle, Pho Chay and Taqueria Enceladus.

Not Friends, but Acquaintances: (That shirt in the back of my closet I can’t destash, but I would have to run through my entire closet before wearing it again) Hotter Chocolate and Equinox.

Give me your room spray recs!

I'm looking for some room sprays so I thought I'd ask here first. Fall themed is fine but I don't really have a preference. As long as it's something you genuinely like I'm good.
