Recs for a book that's going to make me cackle?

I'm in a little reading slump and I need something that's going to make me laugh so loud I disturb everyone around me. I want to look unhinged.

I loved She's a Lamb! if that helps

Any perfume orders you’re waiting for / considering buying?

I am anxiously awaiting my Sucrerie sample order, and there are a few I’m especially excited about:

Morari - In these Ivied Halls

(Pencil Shavings, Blackberry, Black Tea, Clematis, Ivy)

I love anything with an academia theme and if I like this I could definitely see it becoming a fall staple this year. I know I like the smell of pencil shavings but I never thought about how it’d smell on my skin.

Pearfat - Sister Hildegard

(Blood Orange, Elemi, Flecks Of Dust Against Stained Glass, Bowl Of Milk, Sacred Incense, Old Wood, Cyclamen, Camphor, Spikenard)

I can’t conceptualize how this smells at all but I like the vibes. Honestly I read a book awhile ago that featured Hildegard and that was a big reason why I picked it.

Cirrus - Parakeet

(Fizzy grapefruit soda, freshly picked daisies, tiny forget-me-nots, and the powdery sweet down feathers of a well groomed parakeet)

This just sounds bright and delightful. I’ve had one hit with Cirrus so far and a few misses so I wanted to branch out and try them more.

What about you? What perfumes are you awaiting in the mail or thinking about ordering?

What are your favorite indie cake accords?

In a gourmand-y mood and I was wondering what perfumes you all love that feature cake. I’m pretty sure I’ve only tried one so far: Vampire Wife by Sorce. Still not sure I love it, I need to sample it again.

Of course, any flavor is good 🍰

Give me your room spray recs!

I'm looking for some room sprays so I thought I'd ask here first. Fall themed is fine but I don't really have a preference. As long as it's something you genuinely like I'm good.

Influence Me 👹 (Mooncat Remedy Edition)

I’m about to put in my first Mooncat order. It’s loooooong overdue. Anyway I saw the Remedy collection and I love the color changing thermals!!

What do you have from this collection? Is it nice? Are the thermals difficult to work with? I’ve heard they are. I’m definitely getting Momo Yuyake but want to pick 2-3 more.

When you buy a perfume online, are you influenced the most by the fragrance notes, description, or artwork?

Since my no buy July is (finally) coming to an end, it’s time to decide what samples I’ll be ordering for August. My wishlist is long, so I thought it’d be fun to see how you all decide what to sample: following the fragrance notes, the (often flowery) descriptions, or the visual branding?

I have a pretty unsophisticated nose and I’ve learned that I can’t gauge how a fragrance will smell due to the notes alone. I thought I hated petrichor but turns out I love Meet Me on Sunnyside by Sorce. Sundrunk by Imaginary Authors has all the notes I should love and I ended up scrubbing it. For me it’s a wild toss up.

Artwork is nice, but I mostly just see if they use AI so I don’t give them my business. I like Pineward’s artwork and I appreciate houses like Alkemia and Wick Wish’s use of classic paintings for each scent. They provide immediate visual clues for how the fragrance feels.

I think the most important thing for me is scent names and descriptions. Explaining the time, place, and scenario (mundane or magical) a fragrance is trying to transport me to draws me in. I love clear concepts and flowery prose. I love waking up and looking at my collection and asking: am I in Ancient Greece today? What about New Orleans in the dead of night? Or maybe I’m jumping into a summertime childhood memory.

What about you? What helps you decide what to sample?

Which indies have your fav orange notes?

I have been obsessed with Sorce - Tarot at Tea Time (Wild orange, black tea, cardamom, fresh ginger, violet leaf absolute, smoky Java vetiver, and hints of labdanum and vanilla) for the past month. It’s such a yummy juicy orange and the black tea definitely stands out as well.

The problem is it won’t be available again until January and my travel size will NOT make it until then. So I thought I’d come here and ask what are your favorite orange notes? 🍊

Y’all my organs were stuck together (adventures in lap #2)

A year ago I began to have low grade fevers with the fatigue and body aches you typically get with the flu. After months and hundreds of dollars and several specialists, I saw my gyno and he immediately goes “oh yeah endometriosis can do that. Let’s have another surgery”

Ok cool cool cool

Yesterday I had laparoscopic 2: 2 laparoscopic 2 furious and all went well. Later I saw the clinical notes and we have:

Extensive and severe adhesions in the cul de sac

2 garden variety endometriosis thingies (clinical term) that were not trying to glue everything together

1 ovarian cyst

And a parrrrrtridge in a pear tree!

Here’s hoping this will buy me at least a few months of relief because oh my god! 😃 it’s been very unwell around here!

Influence Me 👹 (BPAL’s hair gloss edition)

I…still haven’t actually tried any BPAL scents yet. I’m thinking I’d enjoy the hair glosses:

We have combined Tahitian monoi, camelina oil, argan oil, and karanja oil to give your mane a gleaming finishing shine without leaving it gloopy, weighed-down, or greasy.

Your hair will be silkier, shinier, glossier, more vibrant, and frizz-free.”

There are too many to list so I’ll just link here:

What hair glosses do you love? Which do you want to try? Do you feel like you have to coordinate them with your SOTD or do you not worry about scents clashing?

Christmas in July: what are your fav Christmas themed perfumes?

Before all of our favorite houses come out with new holiday releases, I thought it would be fun to have a little Christmas in July post. What are your all time favorite Christmas (or winter holiday) scents?

I….don’t have any yet because I only got into perfumes this past spring. But I’d love to know what to look out for! 🎄

Travel Series: Scents of Mexico 🇲🇽

Here are a few indie perfumes inspired by the history, food, and nature of Mexico. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to try any of these yet, so please let me know below if you have!

Monstera by Xinu

Monstera fruit and leaves, Datura, Bull horn orchid, Moss

Monstera is inspired by the jungle, the green leaves of the monstera deliciosa plant, the narcotic perfume of the datura flower, the subtle and magnetic honey of the torito orchid, and the smell of moss over exotic woods.
Monstera is astonishingly juicy and lush, like a leaf that has been snapped open, allowing droplets of the plant juice to seep out. Supported by a damp earth accord, bitter moss, and the sharpness of a pineapple-like note from the monstera fruit, embraced by a creamy white floral tone, with a hint of bitter cocoa and vanilla. Technically impressive !

*Xinu is a Mexican company

Bosque Místico by Nopalera

Hibiscus, Pepper, Citrus Zest Honeysuckle, Orris, Cashmere Woods

Sweet and inviting, Bosque Místico eau de parfum captures the allure of Mexico’s mystical forests with notes of sweet hibiscus, spicy pepper, and vibrant citrus zest. Honeysuckle and orris bloom at its heart, while cashmere woods wrap you in a cozy embrace. The perfect scent for tender days and nights.

*Nopalera is a Mexican American company

Frida by Immortal Perfumes

Black Jasmine, Musk, Cactus, Tonka Bean, Black Leather, Vanilla Bourbon, Smoked Sandalwood, Black Orchid

Frida Kahlo was one of the greatest painters to hail from Mexico. When she was impaled in a bus accident in 1925, she was bedridden for a year. Her parents put a mirror above her bed and gave her an easel. During those long hours in bed she taught herself to paint by painting the subject she knew best - herself.

Her favorite perfume was Shalimar by Guerlain. This perfume was inspired by her signature scent and her colorful life.

Mayan Chocolate by Aether Arts

Chilies, green jungle and orchid, rich chocolate, exotic woods, incense

A chocolate perfume like no other, Mayan Chocolate will transport you to the lush green jungles where the Cacao Tree grows and blooms. Mayan Chocolate pays homage to the origin and source of chocolate within the many cultures of Mesoamerica. Bright, green, vegetal notes are paired with the chilies and spices used to make Xocoatl, a traditional, unsweetened, chocolate drink beloved by both Mayan and Aztec cultures. The scent of exotic orchids drifts through the humid air. Nearby, an altar smokes with an offering of sacred Palo Santo and Copal incense thanking the gods for their gift of the cacao beans. Woven throughout is the rich, dark scent of chocolate and for a moment you are there, sipping your cup of Xocoatl amid the verdant vegetation.

Flan by RDZ Parfums

Coconut milk, caramel, vanilla orchid, cinnamon, musk, pastry cream

Today, flan is a universal symbol of celebration and family across many Latin cultures, each with its own twist on the classic recipe. This universal appeal makes RDZ Parfums' "Flan" a fragrance that resonates widely, offering an aromatic tribute to a dessert cherished from Mexico to Argentina and beyond, making it a perfect embodiment of shared heritage and personal memories.

Coyoacán by Fantome

Desert wind, sweet nectar, cool stone, Mexican vanilla, creosote, hibiscus, sage

Coyoacán is a warm, atmospheric fragrance that blooms on the skin much like desert air  warming cobblestones in the morning shade. The stone note provides a contrasting anchor to the warmer aspects of the fragrance, and seeks to evoke the cobblestones lining the art-filled streets of Coyoacán. The Mexican vanilla is a rich, dark vanilla absolute, which deepens the sweet nectar and lightly floral hibiscus. There is a complexity to this fragrance that creates the full impression of the district's atmosphere, rather than a series of individual notes.

Strolling through serene Coyoacán on a balmy spring day was the inspiration for this fragrance, intending to create a small snapshot of the incredible beauty of Mexico City. Known as the "land of many coyotes," Coyoacán features a fountain in the heart of the city with two bronze coyotes watching over the square. In this flourishing art district, the stone streets are lined with carts of fresh flowers and fruit, sprawling urban gardens, and Mexican baroque architecture. Coyoacán was once home to Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and their influence can still be seen in the original murals and street art tributes that adorn the bright orange and indigo buildings of the area.

Wedding in Oaxaca by Kismet Olfactive

Pink Pepper, Ginger, Coconut Milk, Geranium, Gardenia, Violet Leaves, Osmanthus, Musk, Sandalwood

Wedding in Oaxaca is the story of two lovers bound together in a mystical Mexican city, surrounded by a parade of local music, dance, and friends in wild celebration. A playful fragrance, Wedding in Oaxaca fuses smooth lactonic notes of coconut milk and tuberose with fresh floral violet leaves and woody undertones of vetiver, musk, and sandalwood. May this scent always remind you of a memorable moment in time.

Quetzalcoatl by Arcana Wildcraft

Omani frankincense resin, bright passionfruit, pink grapefruit, sweet coconut, organic lemon essence, warm, woody Sylvamber, and the rays of the sun

Quetzalcoatl: The essence of sacred joy. As the feathered serpent god of life, peace, dawn, and the creation of the world, he is the compassionate savior of mankind, and his skin smells of sunshine.

*discontinued. Get decants from sucrerie.com

Conchas by Fyrinnae

sweet yeast bread made with quite a bit of milk & cream and topped with sweet streusel containing just the barest hint of vanilla

A distinctive pan dulce throughout Mexico and much of the US, concha breads are made to resemble the shells they're named for. Whole milk, and often cream, enrich the flavor of these fluffy, sweet little loaves, usually topped with a sugary streusel frosting in various colors.

¡Viva México! by Pulp Fragrance

Arroz con leche, blonde wood, & Mexican vanilla.

5 Imaginary Authors Reviews

Here are five Imaginary Authors Scents I’ve sampled recently. I gravitate towards citrus, fruits, florals, and gourmands. I chose these specifically because I thought I’d like the fragrances based on the notes.

0/10=ew no, had to scrub
5/10=it’s okay, I’d recommend it to someone if I thought their tastes would match
10/10=I’m foaming at the mouth and ordering it right now

In Love With Everything

Neon Raspberry, Citrus Pulp, Coconut Palm Sugar, Sandalwood, Tropical Punch, Stardust

This is not what I expected! I thought this might be loud but it really isn’t. It’s a grounded but unmistakably tropical scent. The raspberry is bright but then quickly fades to the background in favor of the sandalwood and tropical punch. Extremely wearable

Rating: 7/10

Saint Julep

Sweet Mint, Tangerine, Southern Magnolia, Bourbon, Grisalva, Sugarcube, Crushed Ice

It’s okay. Bourbon comes out a lot and the Grisalva. I was hoping for more mint and ice.

Rating: 4/10

Sundrunk

Neroli, Rhubarb, Honeysuckle, Rose Water, Orange Zest, First Kiss

I do not like this. We start with a neroli and orange cleaning solution smell and then it dries down to…more cleaning solution. This one is actually a scrub.

Rating: 0/10

Fox in the Flowerbed

Jasmine, Tulips, Frankincense, Wildflower Honey, Pink Peppercorns, Silver Thistle, Alpine Air

This is heavily jasmine and frankincense. I am not a fan of this combination. It goes from that sharp alcohol smell Imaginary Authors tends to have then quickly settles into a funky jasmine and frankincense soup. Disappointed more of the tulips and honey aren’t coming through tbh. Oh god yeah I need to scrub this.

Rating: 0/10

Falling into the Sea

Lemon, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lychee, Tropical Flowers, Warm Sand

This really is walking past some citrus trees and tropical flowers on the beach. I love how accurate the “warm sand” accord feels. The citrus isn’t sharp at all and so there’s a softness to the fragrance.

Rating: 7/10

Travel Series: Scents of Japan 🇯🇵

Here are some unique perfumes inspired by the environment and culture of Japan. I haven’t tried any of these (yet) so please let me know if you have! And of course, share the Japanese inspired indies you love!

Tatami by Fantome

The welcoming and familiar scent of a Japanese temple. Tatami (rice straw mats), warmed in the sun, with soothing temple incense.

The singular scent that can evoke the time spent in Japan by any traveler is that of the iconic tatami mats that line temples, restaurants, and homes. When tatami ages and warms, it creates a pleasant natural aroma in the space. There is no way to naturally distill the scent of the rice straw of which most tatami mats are woven, so we sourced a cypress that has undergone the same treatment process as tatami and painstakingly recreated the scent of rice straw tatami in a temple. Due to our sourcing of these unique ingredients, initial application may be strong before it warms and deepens, similar to that of the life cycle of tatami.

*part of Fantome’s Japan collection

Bathhouse Mishap by BPAL

White tea, golden pear, Himalayan cedar, and eucalyptus blossom.

From the Shunga Series: A limited edition Salon series celebrating the joy, humor, playfulness, and thrill of sexual intercourse through scent interpretations of Edo era Japanese erotic art.

Shirin Yoku by Alkemia

Bright rays of bitter orange, Japanese grapefruit, black geranium, black pepper, and spicebush filtering through a forest of green cedar tips, alpine conifers, green patchouli, vetiver root, accompanied by gently flowing stream water, wet clay, and the waiting stillness of dark loam.

Shinrin-Yoku: The medicine of simply being in the forest. Shinrin-yoku means "taking in the forest atmosphere" or "forest bathing."

Okinawa Emerald Beach by Cocoapink

Fresh crisp ozone tempered with salty sea air, branches of weathered driftwood, blue kelp, Japanese gold osmanthus over a sensual base of myrrh resin.

Matcha by Osmofolia

Nutty, seaweedy, grassy, powdery, and green. A non-milky, non-sugared matcha single note.

Kiyohime by Fyrinnae

Sweet white peaches, almost overripe, drizzled in sweet vanilla creme, with a couple singed marshmallows on the side.

Amaterasu by Poesie

golden sandalwood incense, rice milk, bright cardamom, amber, dry wheat, and sunflowers

The Shinto goddess of the sun and the universe and mythical ancestress of the Imperial House of Japan, Amaterasu illuminates all things and oversees the movement of day into night. Just as the rising and setting of the sun give order to the day, she rules the heavens and gives order to the universe.

Tale of Genji by The Little Book Eater

Cherry Blossom • Sugar Cane • Litsea • Bamboo

This fragrance is inspired by the 11th century classic by Japanese noblewoman, Murasaki Shikibu. Made with the scents of cherry blossom, sugar cane, litsea, and bamboo. The perfect combination for royal and complicated romance, and long-winded poetics!

Bakeneko by Nui Cobalt

Spiced plum wine, molten caramel, blood orange marmalade, crimson musk, and warm fur accord.

The shapeshifter cats of Japan whose appetite for human blood belies a protective love of their guardians. When one's keeper meets a wrongful death, tales describe the Bakeneko’s sophisticated venture of intrigue and revenge.

3 Greek Mythology Themed Reviews from The Little Book Eater

I bought 3 perfume oils from The Little Book Eater a month ago and I have some thoughts:

Helen of Troy

Apple • Honey • Pear • Sunflower • Sea Spray • Honeysuckle • Vetiver

The apple scent of my dreams. Seriously, I’ve been looking for a nice apple that’s suited for summer rather than fall, and this is it. Apple and honey are the star of the show; it’s very sweet which I love, and the other notes keep it juuuuuuust from becoming cloying. The dry down has a muskiness to it, almost powdery. Lasts a good 5 hours too.

I think it would be more apt to call this The Judgment of Paris since it conjures the image of a golden apple perfectly. It’s that tantalizing prize being dangled before Paris by the three goddesses. The moment before he ruins everything.

Rating: 10/10 golden apples

Medusa

Water Orchid • Sea Salt • Bergamot • Narcissus • Jasmine • Bamboo Leaf • Lemon • Green Vetiver • Sea Moss • Musk

A refreshing watery green floral. It’s consistent in that the dry down is pretty much the same as the opening to my nose. The florals give it a pleasant sweetness.

This is not the intense scent I assumed based on the name. This is Medusa chilling on her day off in her lair, which she keeps neat and tidy, thank you very much. It’s sitting by a pool filled with plants and flowers and taking a much needed break from turning men to stone. Nothing intimidating at all.

Rating: 8/10 snakes

Goddess Aphrodite

Pomegranate • Apple • Rose • Orchid • Sea Foam • Cashmere Musk

Oof. I only get rose from this. So much rose. There’s the briefest hint of a pomegranate floating by when you first apply it and then it’s ALL ROSE ALL THE TIME. And I like rose! But I wanted to smell the other notes too ya know.

I don’t even feel the Aphroditiness here. It’s just smelling a rose oil.

Rating: 3/10 roses, would not buy again

Had to stop a workout because of cramps 🥴

Sitting here at the gym waiting for my friend to finish so we can leave. Only got to do squats before my body was like “nope”

Anyone else have times where exercising causes cramps to start like instantly? At least I’m getting laparoscopic excision next month…this sucks
