iuoe or college

I am a sophomore in college studying construction management. I live with my wife and can really only work in the summer. should i continue my degree a become a superintendent down the road? I already applied for local 18 and got past test and interview but did not get selected for most recent pao. wondering is becoming an operator is worth it or if the superintendent route is better long term?

Local 793 OETIO Trade Entrance Exam

I’m getting ready to write my local 7930 ETIO trade entrance exam number two. I need help with the formulas. I need help with like a cheat sheet with all the formulas and link any links on that would be helpful to help me study from without taking into over information or too much information which I find I’m doing now and I’m losing what I need to in the mix so I need a more direct help like Chi cheats with all the formulas, you know, and all the breakdowns and for the maths and the trade sciences, and the spatial relations is another animal entirely. I got no words for that one if anybody can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Traveling as an operator

Right now I am an apprentice just looking around to see what other people’s experiences are. On the pace I’m at right now I should be finished with my apprenticeship in about a year give or take. I’m in the northeast right now. What has your guys experience been in traveling south getting on the travelers list for 4 months out of the year? Is it difficult to find union work in southern states being that they’re typically more red? Any advice or input would be appreciated. Thank you

Stationary Engineer/HP in NYC

Good Morning. Im looking into pursuing the high pressure operating engineer certification in NYC. Currently, I hold FDNY COFs: Q01, F60, G60, A35, P98, P99, S12, S13. I hold a bachelors of science in mechanical engineering and Engineer in Training certification so my understanding is my time to HP is shorter. The only situation is getting a position at a plant under an engineer.
Ive been working as an RSOE for 3+ years now.

Please give me any advice feel free to PM. I would love to chat with someone who has experience especially anyone who has recently entered.

Thank you

Heading to Crosby in june for the Level 1 Crane operations.

I've been an oiler and running excavator for 6 years... I miss the crane classes at my local every single year!

Well tli pulled the trigger and requested for the class.

Only problem is I have no experience with cranes.... I know basic hand signals and have been around a few cranes ..

I know 0 terminology, I've never been in a crane... Got me a little nervous over here.

Gonna go make myself look like a DA

( I didn't think I would get in the class) 💀

Any tips , YouTube links , drop some knowledge on me 🤘 ,

I'm gonna go to the library and and at least learn some terminology over the next month.

2 problems

How did u guys call off work for the 1st and 2nd week of apprenticeship evaluation? I had to call off work with only a couple days in advance and they were not happy (it's an asphalt company, I'm a truck driver, and I just started working for them). Idk how I'm gonna call off if I get called in for the 5 day evaluation of the apprenticeship. I just don't want to quit before knowing for sure that I will be accepted into the union. Also, today I flipped over the excavator during the simulation and it flagged me for a major violation. How screwd am I? Thanks

Help get into apprentice

I have my Class A CDL and would like to become a heavy equipment operator or mechanic. I have applied to a ton of apprenticeships but do not get selected. What is the best way to join for an apprenticeship? I thought having my CDL would get my foot in the door but I was wrong, lol.

Testing

I want to apply to some apprenticeships and most you need to take a mechanical aptitude test. Some require a workkeys test for math, literacy, and workplace documents. I have been out of high school for 7 years so definitely a little nervous. What are the tests like and what are some study guides? Appreciate any information!

Is joining worth it

Hi there, as the title says, I’m wondering if you feel this career is worth it. A little background on me, I’m 21M and I’m in college right now. I’ve struggled in college and I’m starting to have doubts that I picked the right career choice. I know about IUOE because my dad is an Operator in the union. However I want a completely unbiased opinion. I want to know if there is good job security, if it pays well (I’m in the Northeast if that helps). What operating in severe weather is like. How the apprenticeship process is and any other details you can provide me. Thank you

Any October testers been getting calls??

I tested in October of last year. I got a 87. I know it’s kind of low and a lot of people said expect to retest. It’s kinda hard to get in with a score low like that so has anyone gotten any calls yet and what was your score?

Has anyone been sponsored in by a signatory contractor?

If so, what was the process? Do you still need to test and wait?

Question for your oilers out there.

Journeyman here just made the switch from the dirt side to cranes. Got my first job as an oiler back in March. I've been looking for some good long lasting work pants or coveralls. On the dirt side as an operator I never had to do much of my own greasing and what not because we had an oiler come out every morning to fuel and grease all the equipment before we started. I want to get other oilers opinions on work pants. Since I am the one doing that now my pants are covered in oil and grease all day pretty much from the minute I start work. My work does not provide coveralls or anything along those lines. Just want to know what works best for you. I am up and down the crane all day, something that would protect the knees.

Best regards,
Local 701 Brother.

Inquiring about work in Alaska

I was just curious what the current work situation is in Alaska for 302. I am currently already a member in 302 in Seattle and have my class A CDL with no restrictions, OSHA 30, qualified rigger and signalman, and lift director. I am currently working but am looking for lots of hours to stack money to purchase a house. I’ve heard stories of 12 or 16 hour days 7 days a week which is enticing. I do have a family and am working so I only want to pursue it if the hours are worth it.

Question for the PAO classes, how long do you have to wait for your results from your urinalysis? I know if you’re positive you’ll be dismissed, do they wait until the end to tell you?
