Applying to all small market stations in NY state.

I completely realize that the New York City market is completely out of Reach, including NEWS, 12 Westchester, Brooklyn and Long Island and I also applied to broadcasting a city jobs like WNYE at the recommendation of my extremely controlling and ableist and narcissistic mother. Though I’ve been constantly clashing with her about the impossibility of finding broadcasting jobs in New York City and she’s gaslighting me saying that I will knowing she is such a liar.

Right now, I am applying to small and medium market stations in New York, including cities like Watertown, Binghamton, Ithaca, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Albany.

Do I even have a chance at any of those places or because I am autistic and get services from OPWDD am I doomed to be perpetually rejected which is my biggest fear?

The reason it’s such a big fear of mine is because I have a condition known as rejection sensitive dysphoria, which makes me especially sensitive and perceptive to rejection.

The constant expectation of rejection softens the blow when it happens.

Here is a cover letter example that I wrote to the TV station in Watertown. I just submitted this application and several others and I did apply to many places in New York City but all for the most entry-level production assistant jobs. This one in Watertown is for an MMJ/digital reporter position

My legal Name (preferred in parentheses)
August 10, 2026
WWTI-ABC50 Recruitment Team
Nexstar Media Group, Inc.
105 Court Street
Watertown, NY 13601
Subject: Application for Digital Reporter / Multi-Media Journalist (Job ID: REQ-41642)

Dear WWTI-ABC50 Recruitment Team,
I am incredibly excited to apply for the Digital Reporter / Multi-Media Journalist position at WWTI-ABC50 in Watertown. As a recent Broadcasting and Mass Communications graduate from SUNY Oswego, I am deeply familiar with the unique pacing, community focus, and geographical microclimates of Upstate New York. Bringing an innovative, platform-tailored approach to news gathering alongside advanced technical editing skills, I am fully prepared to produce highly engaging, creative, and shareable content for InformNNY.com, social platforms, and your television broadcasts.

Your job description highlights the need for an independent visual storyteller who can shoot high-quality video, edit under tight deadlines, and present news with a highly engaging and conversational tone. My background aligns perfectly with this modern multimedia workflow. Through my work with WTOP 10 TV, I mastered live television studio floor and control room mechanics. I regularly operated studio pedestal cameras under strict director cues, managed physical logistics, and served as live on-air talent. Furthermore, I built my own regional forecasts and independently constructed technical on-air visual assets using the MaxStorm graphics package. This studio-tested experience gives me a sharp, disciplined eye for precise framing, data visualization, and quality control.

Beyond studio floor mechanics, I bring a robust, self-started track record of digital audience growth and video production that satisfies your demand for innovative digital-first content. Since launching my YouTube channel in 2011, I have utilized Adobe Premiere and Camtasia Studios to handle full digital media lifecycles, independently building a combined audience of over 6,700 subscribers across YouTube and TikTok. This training has taught me to monitor real-time feeds, spot viral breaking trends, write creative scripts, and turn raw field elements into clean multimedia packages rapidly. Additionally, my fifteen-year history as a volunteer radio broadcaster for 95.9 WATD-FM, a role I proudly began in November 2010, proves my deep respect for mature editorial judgment, strict deadlines, and rigorous detail verification.

WWTI-ABC50 demands absolute precision, rapid adaptability, and a relentless work ethic. I possess a valid driver’s license with a clean record, the physical stamina required to manage field gear, and I offer complete schedule flexibility to cover shifts across early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,

ON-AIR BROADCAST DEMO SEGMENTS (WTOP 10 TV)

Segment 3: Starts at [8:15]

Segment 4: Starts at [13:02]

Digital Weather Channel: [https://youtube.com/@andissevereweathercenter?si=DUORODX1soFsawWW\]

What is the chance that I will get the MJ position especially with my 16 years of volunteer broadcasting experience for WATD 95.9 and the fact I’ve been editing my own videos for many years now on YouTube?

Advice needed!

So I (25) have been an out of work journalist (freelancing here and there) for about two years. I got this offer that I think I’m going to accept for a newspaper covering politics in a state I’m not thrilled about moving to. My end goal is to live in Chicago or some type of major metro city (preferably Midwest bc that’s where I’m from) covering government or education. Recently got through two rounds of interviews for a suburban paper for the tribune but didn’t end up getting the job. :(

If/when I accept this offer, how hard would it be to transition to/get a job later down the line in a major city/market? This job is great for the type of journalism I want to get into but I don’t want the location to hold me back from breaking into a bigger city. I also just do not see myself living in this location long term.

All that to say, I will probably accept this job offer because it’s best for my career, I’m just worried that it will derail my plans to move to a bigger city in the future.

Hello, Journalism Majors what it’s like to be in that Major?

Context: I am suppose to be a Journalism major before deciding to switch to business, but I decided to major in business anyway and I always have a passion for writing, especially writing short stories, poems, etc.

Common sense that I know it’s mostly writing, but there something that a journalism major can do that I cannot do as a business major.

Why is journalism so underpaid ?

I currently have a fully remote job, that I’m not really happy at. Nothing bad, just realizing everyday it’s not particularly my thing. The plus side is the pay is not too bad for someone early-ish career like me. But changing jobs means either relocating to a place with a higher cost of living and less salary, i just don’t see any remote jobs.

I had a lot of hope graduating college and reality hit pretty hard pretty soon. somehow 40-45k for a full time role is pretty commonplace, even in some places like California?! And 60-65k is considered decently paid? 100k or more is more of a managerial role or comes with years and years of experience so more and more it sounds like to make it in life in terms of money need to change fields entirely. I don’t know if I have other skills for a transition Tbh.

the only way I’m comfortable in life right now is because I have a partner who works in tech. We graduated at the same time but the pay disparity between us is kind of wild to me tbh.

More of a rant, not really looking for solutions but if anyone has any guidance or advice I’d love to hear some.
