Namie Amuro has returned (in limited form) to streaming!

Her Sweet 19 Blues album has appeared on Qobuz, the French streaming service. Why that specific service and not Apple Music or Spotify, I have no idea but let's take our wins where we find them.

Why Zenbu Kimi no Sei da's "whiny melty whiny" is much darker than it sounds

“whiny melty whiny” is a pleasant EDM track by Zenbu Kimi no Sei da, perfect for chilling on a warm summer evening… until you look at the lyrics and realize the girls are singing about a “trauma best left untouched,” a life spent hiding from people, and a belief in one's own defectiveness that goes so far as to compare oneself to household chemicals ☠️

Here’s my analysis of one of Zenkimi’s harshest and most depressing songs. Among other things, it contains a whole range of interesting nuances that are very difficult — or even impossible — to fully convey in translation, yet they significantly amplify the already powerful emotional impact the song is capable of creating.

“How much longer do I have to suffer before I change?
How long do I have to keep crying before I can be saved?
I don’t even know where I belong,
And the only thing that keeps growing is the pain.”

The pain isn’t simply getting worse. It is the only thing that is growing at all.

“Come to think of it, I can never forget
That contemptuous, disdainful gaze —
Just like Medusa’s.
A trauma best left untouched.”

It’s interesting that the song specifically invokes the image of Medusa Gorgon. That means this contemptuous gaze literally “petrified” her, turning her to stone.

The final line is literally “a forbidden trauma” in the original. It’s quite an unusual expression. Apparently, the idea is of a psychological trauma so painful to revisit that the heroine has isolated it within her memories, as though she had put a label on it saying: “Do not touch.”

“‘I guess I’ll just have to go on living in hiding’ —
That’s what I’ve always thought.”

In other words, the heroine has always lived trying to blend in — never to stand out, never to draw people’s eyes toward her.

She views her very existence as a nuisance to others. And she never believed anything would ever change.

“Everyone is born carrying something of their own that shines.
‘I don’t believe that.’
That’s a lie. I don’t even have a tomorrow.
Somebody, help me.”

The heroine seems to be recalling a familiar positive message that society likes to tell people — that everyone is unique and talented in their own way. Perhaps it once gave her some hope, but now there is clearly none of that left: “I don’t believe that.”

And judging by the quotation marks, this is so far the only line from her inner monologue that she actually voices aloud, which gives it particular emotional weight.

“I put on shoes that are impossible to dance in,
And my heart that can't beat properly is pure dissonance.”

Shoes that are impossible to dance in” make it feel as though the heroine was given the "wrong starting gear" for life.

This sounds particularly poignant in the context of an idol group, where dancing is a core part of the profession.

And if the first line speaks only of the defectiveness of her “gear,” the second shifts that same idea inward: even her own heart is incapable of performing its basic function properly.

"Dissonance" in the original specifically refers to acoustic, musical dissonance, which again strongly resonates with the artistic nature of idols.

“I tried to fly, and fell to the earth.
If I imagine myself as a fallen angel, I wonder if I could smile?”

The kanji used for “fell” here specifically emphasizes falling into some kind of lower state — a moral, spiritual, or psychological fall. This creates an obvious double image: both a physical fall to the ground and a psychological fall as a person. The same kanji is used in 堕天使, “fallen angel,” in the following line.

The heroine has lost the ability to smile so completely that the only reason she can imagine for smiling now is to find something ironic in her own condition. That in itself is an intensely depressing image — although, as the final chorus will show, this is not yet the bottom.

“My voice is destined to be swallowed up by the noise.”

The “noise” in the original is specifically 喧騒, the din and bustle of the city.

It immediately conjures up the image of the heroine’s cry being “swallowed” by the indifferent noise of the crowd around her.

Incidentally, this image later carried over into the lyrics of TOKYO TEFUTEFU, becoming one of their central motifs.

There’s another interesting detail here. The written lyrics use the word 運命 (“fate”), but the word actually sung is 定め.

運命 is the standard word for fate or destiny. 定め can mean much the same thing, but it carries a much deeper, more poetic, and fatalistic overtone. It is a predestination, an absolute rule, or a karmic burden. You cannot escape a "定め."

“‘Forgive me already’ —
These words that slipped out of me torment me again.”

The heroine isn’t being tormented by someone else.

She is being tormented by her own words.

Even the desperate plea of “please, enough” ends up causing her pain afterward — likely stemming from the realization of her own weakness.

“And the drops flow.”

Most likely, these “drops” are tears. But the author deliberately avoids using the direct word , “tears.”

“Like a defect, something so intense.
Like a foreign substance. ‘DO NOT MIX — DANGER.’”

The song uses a technical term: 不具合, meaning a defect, malfunction, or bug.

In other words, the heroine doesn’t merely feel defective; she feels like a system error.

“Foreign substance” (異物) intensifies the image, and then it culminates in “DO NOT MIX — DANGER.” If you search the original phrase online and look at the images, you’ll immediately see Japanese household cleaning products. In Japan, this warning is used on chlorine- and acid-based cleaning products whose combination can release a deadly toxic gas.

That makes the heroine’s metaphor even harsher: it isn’t simply “I’m incompatible with society.” It becomes the frightening idea that “contact between me and other people is toxic and destructive.”

“Whether I exist or not, it doesn’t matter.”

Not “It would be better if I didn't exist,” but rather:

>“Whether I exist or not makes no difference.”

That sounds even more painful.

“‘WHO AM I — NO ONE KNOWS.’”

Writing this in katakana gives the phrase a frightening sense of alienation and mechanical detachment, as though it is no longer normal human speech but some kind of broken internal signal.

“I scatter…”

Like sakura petals falling away.

We now move into the final chorus, which is almost identical to the first, but contains several very subtle yet important changes.

“I put on shoes that are impossible to dance in,
And my heart that doesn't beat properly is pure dissonance.”

At first glance, it’s easy to miss the change, but it’s there.

It was mawarenai (回れない), and now it is mawaranai (回らない).

"Can't beat properly" became simply "doesn't beat properly."

Before, it was still trying.

There was still potential.

But now, there is no sense of struggle left.

Just a cold statement of fact.

Moreover, the verb "回る" (mawaru) is highly versatile in Japanese. Applied to this metaphor, it might not even mean "doesn't beat properly," but simply "doesn't beat." If we take that reading, the image becomes even more hopeless: her heart hasn't just given up trying to beat correctly—it has stopped altogether.

“I tried to fly, and fell to the earth.
If I had imagined myself as a fallen angel then, I wonder if I could have smiled?”

Another change of literally a single syllable: waraeru (笑える) → waraeta (笑えた).

"If I imagine myself as a fallen angel, I wonder if I could smile?" became "If I had imagined myself as a fallen angel then, I wonder if I could have smiled?".

Meaning, this change has shifted the hypothetical question from the present into the past.

The heroine no longer believes herself capable of smiling.

Even the hypothetical possibility has been left behind in the past.

“My voice is always drowned out by the noise, and even its echo dies.”

The voice is no longer merely swallowed by the noise. It is completely drowned out, and even its echo dies.

Furthermore, 余韻 doesn’t mean only a literal acoustic echo. It can also mean an emotional aftertaste, a lingering impression. So it’s possible to say that what disappears here is not merely the voice itself, but even the possibility of it leaving any trace behind.

“‘Forgive me already’ —
These words that slipped out of me torment me now.”

“Again” has been replaced by “now.”

Previously, the emphasis was on repetition. The heroine could be seen as trapped in the same cycle over and over: she would break down, utter those pathetic words, and then torment herself over her own weakness. It was painful, but it was also a familiar routine.

Now, however, the focus sharply narrows to a single point in the present. There is no more “again.” There is only the unbearable pain overwhelming her right now, in this very moment.

“And the drops melt.”

This is such an interesting and unusual image that it deserves a closer look.

Before, the drops simply flowed. And it was clear that these drops were most likely tears. Now, however, the drops melt, or, as 溶ける can also be translated, dissolve. But why describe them this way?

One possible interpretation is that this refers to the aesthetics of Yami Kawaii, where the “cute” side is often deliberately made hyper-sweet and sugary to create an even sharper contrast with the “sick” side: bleeding pastel colors, marble-like swirls, melting sweets or hearts. The title “whiny melty whiny” evokes exactly this kind of visual association for me.

Another, darker interpretation is that the heroine isn’t merely crying — she is melting, gradually dissolving into her own tears and pain.

If we take these two interpretations as complementing each other, the result is an incredibly harsh, even terrifying Yami Kawaii image.

Does this type of group have a name?

I know this group is Korean, but they have the style of "chika"/underground idol groups. I've seen others like this from Korea. Is there a name for this? Groups with a "jpop chika" (alt?) style but of Korean origin?

I NEED song recommendations for this type of genre

I've recently watched the quintessential quintuplets and it was peak, but i really liked the op 1 intro ("Gotoubun no Kimochi") I love songs that are super catchy, upbeat, and instantly put you in a good mood just like that. Also another great song i like Your lie in April op 1 Hikaru Nara (光るなら)

If you have any recommendations for J-pop songs similar to either of those please let me know.

Got into Tommy february6 a month ago and I can’t listen to anything else

I discovered Tomoko’s music about a month ago and it’s basically all I’ve played since. Runs, walks, falling asleep, it’s Tommy on repeat!!!

None of my friends are into this genre which is a shame because I’m having the time of my life over here. For reference I’m a guy haha, but honestly everyone should be able to vibe to this.

Would love more recommendations in this lane and honestly just people to talk about this with, because this music genuinely fuels my day to day!! Tommy heavenly6 and Brilliant Green are already on my radar but this pop vibe really gets me going.
