A truly independent Kashmir must include Kashmiri Pandits

As Kashmiri Muslims, many of us demand self-determination and, for some, an independent Kashmir. But I think we also need to ask ourselves an important question: What about our Kashmiri Pandit brothers and sisters?Kashmiri Pandits are an integral part of Kashmir’s history, society, culture, and heritage. Many Pandits today are understandably more aligned with India, and I believe we need to genuinely listen to their perspectives rather than dismiss them. If we are serious about building a future for Kashmir, their voices must be part of that conversation.

Yes, there has been oppression and suffering at the hands of the Indian state and security forces, and Kashmiri Muslims have experienced immense hardship. But acknowledging our own community's responsibility for the suffering of Kashmiri Pandits does not weaken our case—it makes our position more honest. The persecution and exodus of Kashmiri Pandits were a terrible chapter in our history, and we cannot simply pretend that Kashmiri Muslims were entirely innocent or that the suffering of Pandits does not matter.I also strongly reject militancy, religious extremism, and the idea that Kashmir's political future should be based on Islam. If we genuinely want an independent Kashmir, then why should its identity or political struggle be defined by one religion? When separatism is presented through an Islamic framework, it is understandable that many Kashmiri Pandits may feel alienated or more secure within India. Before we talk about defeating India or confronting the Indian Army, we should first think about rebuilding trust among the people of Kashmir itself. If I advocate for an independent Kashmir, I would want that Kashmir to be an extremely secular and democratic country where Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and everyone else have equal rights and where no minority ever feels even 1% unsafe or unwanted. An independent Kashmir without Kashmiri Pandits would not represent the Kashmir I believe in. Nor would a Kashmir where Pandits are denied equal rights or treated as outsiders. We should seriously discuss how those who wish to return can do so safely, voluntarily, with dignity, and with genuine guarantees of security and equality.

Thousands of Kashmiri Pandit families have lived away from their homeland for decades, despite being one of the historically prominent communities of Kashmir. Their displacement is not something we should forget.I also know a Kashmiri Pandit who is active in this sub and who has also participated in the Kashmiri Hindus subreddit. What I found particularly meaningful was that he acknowledged that Kashmiri Muslims' anger toward India has understandable reasons because of the oppression and suffering they have experienced. In other words, despite being a Kashmiri Pandit and having his own community's painful history, he is still capable of recognizing the suffering of Kashmiri Muslims. If a Kashmiri Pandit can show that kind of empathy toward us, shouldn't we be willing to show the same empathy toward them? This is exactly why I believe we need dialogue rather than hostility. We don't have to agree politically or historically on everything. A Kashmiri Pandit can be pro-India, while a Kashmiri Muslim can support independence, and we can still recognize each other as Kashmiris and care about each other's safety and dignity. At the end of the day, Kashmiri Muslims and Kashmiri Pandits share centuries of history, culture, heritage, and deep roots in the same land. We should not allow political ideologies or religious divisions to erase that shared identity. If we truly want a better future for Kashmir, we need to listen to each other, acknowledge each other's suffering, reject extremism, and build a Kashmir where nobody has to live in fear because of their religion or political beliefs.A free Kashmir, if that is the future we seek, must be a Kashmir for everyone including our Kashmiri Pandit brothers and sisters. 🕊️

Increasing rape cases in Kashmir.

There has been a serious spike in rape cases in Kashmir recently, recently there was a heart wrenching case where a minor(12 y/o) was gang-raped. Isn't it a responsibility of the government to help diminish these cases. Now that (in my opinion) government arent taking any major steps against rape, what can we do on the ground level to reduce it? is there even a way by which we can stop it? i would love to hear the answers!

A cross border marriage

I want to have insight about a Kashmiri-Pakistani wedding, is there anyone who can help me understand the dynamics of such a marriage? The couple want to live outside Kashmir and Pakistan, aren't involved in any sort of politics between the two countries and just want to live their life together. Immediate PR or passport from some other country is not possible immediately but is a future goal and want to register their marriage in the middle east. I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

Uniformed personnel drinking at a school campus in Kashmir and assaulting a local

I am a teacher working at a school in Kashmir, and I have been living on the school campus for the past five to six months.

Today, we had a PTM for Grade 7. As is usually the case, it extended beyond school hours, and I left around 5:45 p.m. While making my way towards the residential area, a security guard stopped me from taking the usual route at the back and asked me to go through the reception instead. When I asked why, he simply told me that there was a “major” at the back and that a party was going on.
Behind the school is an open swimming-pool area. As I passed through the campus, I noticed four military/security vehicles and a considerable number of uniformed personnel gathered around the pool.

Later, while speaking to the other teachers, we learnt that alcohol and cigarettes had been brought there in considerable quantities. There were crates of alcohol. The fact that this was taking place inside a school campus, in an area that is otherwise used by our students, was deeply unsettling.
Around 9 p.m., after dinner, four of us went back towards the pool. The personnel had left only a few minutes earlier. What remained behind was an uncomfortable reminder of what had taken place cigarette butts, bottle caps and the remnants of what had clearly been a drinking session.
Two of the teachers who were with us are male teachers who also live on campus. Earlier, when they had approached the pool area, they were stopped three separate times and asked, “Who are you people?”

At another point, while they were looking around the area, one of the men asked what they were looking for. Another laughed and remarked that perhaps they were “looking for bombs.” There was also repeated use of abusive language.
What happened to a local man nearby was even more disturbing.

The pool is situated beside a stretch of hilly terrain. A man from a nearby village happened to be walking along the higher ground. When he saw the uniformed personnel, he began to run. They went after him, caught him, beat him, brought him back towards the school area and beat him again. It was only when the watchman intervened that they stopped and let him go.

I find the entire incident difficult to comprehend.
This is a school campus. It is a place where children come to learn, where teachers work, and where some of us live. The swimming pool is not merely an empty piece of land, it is a space where one of our teachers teaches students.

To see a place associated with children, learning and discipline being used in this manner was deeply disconcerting. More disturbing still was the apparent sense of impunity with which people could occupy the space, consume alcohol, smoke, hurl abuses, intimidate teachers living on the premises, and, most seriously, assault a local man.

I am deliberately writing this without turning it into a broader political argument. I am simply documenting something that happened on the campus where I work and live, because I am still struggling to understand how such an incident could take place in an educational institution.

Perhaps the most unsettling part is not that this happened, but that it happened in a place whose very purpose is to teach us better ways of treating one another.

If a school cannot remain a space where dignity is protected and power is tempered by responsibility, then what, exactly, are we asking our children to learn from us?

MUSLIM OF JAMMU VS MUSLIM OF KASHMIR

first of all, utmost respect for any conflicting opinions.
Even being the muslim of jammu, i never wanted to get separate from india like majority of muslims in kashmir wants.
how is your mindset different from us, what makes u think that you guys want a separate kashmir (independent), whom do you ask independence from.
i get that there has been issues with current political outfit ruling our country, but anger against one particular political party cannot allow you to demand independence. dont get me wrong. i never aligned myself with right wing ideology but still i admire the fact that i really love this beautiful country.
also this issue of separation from india was never the talking point before 2014. i rarely used to here about it. does it mean that current govt and its ideology forces kashmir to think of separation? what if congress comes in power in next elections? will you change your mindset then?

appreciate constructive dialogue!

One stop shop for building needs

So I have been thinking about starting a business. Haven't done a job anywhere, just graduated few months back. So I had a few business ideas in mind and my main objective is to start something that will generate guaranteed income which is somewhat stable. So basically, the idea is to have a "One stop shop for all building needs". From cement, iron, paints, chemicals, tiles, sanitary fittings, wallpapers, PVC Panellings, etc. We will cover all the needs that are required for building under one roof.

The motive is to provide the customers all the materials they need under one place, which is convenient for the user. And the more the customers shop, the easier it will be to give competitive prices.

The plan is to own around 1 Kanal land, which is around 20 marla. Own the infrastructure and start gradually. Maybe start off with paints and wallpapers/PVC. Later get into sanitary ware, tiles etc and cement and all.

I know it is a heavy investment business, but I won't put in all the money at once. I will start off slow.

I want some feedback from the people here who are experienced and have something to say about it. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Is this what we are? does it really reflect us?

It is said that ''education, not sure whether it give you your dream life or not, but it definitely does make you a better person''. Idk whether this person is bribed for this or it's his own will, but have we actually forgotten the sons, the fathers, the brothers they took, which went missing and their families still know where they are. Have we actually forgotten the people they took and killed for no reason? Am I going to jail for saying this out loud?

Gmc 😭

I was really eager to join gmc jammu..but the reviews of its girls hostel have scared me. So for some reason, I now need to choose between jammu and baramulla. Baramulla students have also continuously complained about the basic hygiene which isn't maintained there.

Jammu is a well established college. If any girl currently living there would help me out, it would really mean a lot.

Any recommendations?

Would you use an app just for Kashmiri music? 🎶

I’ve been thinking about building an app dedicated entirely to Kashmiri music — a place where you can discover and listen to Kashmiri folk songs as well as newer music from Kashmiri artists like Ali Saffudin, Junaid, Yawar Abdal, and others.

The idea is to have everything in one place instead of searching through YouTube/Instagram for songs and artists.

Some possible features:

- 🎵 Kashmiri folk & traditional music

- 🎧 New releases from Kashmiri artists

- 🔎 Discover artists and songs

- ❤️ Save/favorite songs

- 📻 Playlists based on mood/genre

- 🏔️ A proper space dedicated to Kashmiri music and culture

Would you actually use an app like this?

And what would make you choose it over YouTube/Spotify?

Would love to hear what people from Kashmir think before I actually build it.
