PSA to Azad Kashmiris

My family is from IOK; I married a Pakistani and I have visited Pakistan a few times now. I recently found out that people here seem to think Pahari/Pothwari and Kashmiri are the same language; when asked, people from AJK would mention that they speak Kashmiri.

To clarify: Pahari, and any other language native to AJK, is NOT Kashmiri. These are languages that are for the most part understood by Pakistanis in the surrounding areas. These languages are also spoken in the neighboring parts of Punjab and KPK.

Kashmiri, known as Koshur in our language, is spoken in the valley by ethnic Kashmiris. It is a Dardic language that is so different from any other language in Pakistan and india that others are not able to understand it.

This may seem like a non-issue to some, but please understand that as an occupied people, the one thing ethnic Kashmiris have to hold on to is our culture and identity. Random trends keep popping up with the name "Kashmiri" slapped onto them to make them more popular, but they have nothing to do with us (the most recent example being "Kashmiri" bangles). Our culture is constantly being diluted by these kinds of misunderstandings, and I can't really bear the thought of even our language being taken from us.

Chuharnag / Margan Top on July 9th Quick road & transport check?

Salam guys,

Me and a few friends (all are local from Srinagar) are planning a quick 1-night camping trip to Chuharnag Lakes on July 9th before college starts.

We're taking shared Sumos to Kokernag/Mattigawran, but need advice on the last leg to Margan Top:

  1. Local Drivers: Anyone have contacts for a Sumo/Tata Mobile driver in Kokernag/Larnoo for a drop to the top? Or can we book easily on the spot?

  2. Roads & Checkposts: How is the road condition right now? Also, are there any active restrictions at the army checkpost besides logging our physical Aadhaar cards?

...Any recent updates or driver numbers would be a massive help. Thanks!

Need help 😔😔😔

Hey everyone!
Is there any Kashmiri sister who’s moving to AMU (Aligarh Muslim University) this month ?
I’m from Kashmir and will be joining AMU soon. Since it’s my first time moving so far from home, I’m feeling a bit anxious and could really use some guidance or even just someone to connect with.
If that’s you, please reach out or drop a comment. I’d really appreciate it. ❤️

Kashmiri Nurse Sarla Bhat was Gangraped, tortured, carved with JKLF and murdered by Yasin Malik and Terrorists In 1990.

In 1990, Sarla Bhat, 27, was working as a staff nurse at Srinagar’s SKIMS hospital to support her family, even as fear forced her community to flee.

On April 15, 1990, Sarla was abducted from her hostel. For four agonizing days, JKLF terrorists subjected her to brutal torture and sexual assault. When her body was dumped in Mallabagh on April 19, her killers had carved the acronym "JKLF" directly into her flesh from a knife.

The horror continued for her family. When Sarla’s bullet-ridden body returned to Anantnag, the neighborhood was already a ghost town emptied by the exodus. Marooned and helpless, the grieving family could not find enough people to carry her to a funeral pyre. As they attempted her final rites, a grenade was hurled at their home. This targeted terror forced the last remaining Hindu families to flee.

Systemic apathy followed. Though a police complaint was filed in 1990, the file was buried. It took until 2025 for a Special Investigation Agency to reopen the case, naming four terrorists. Two are dead, one is absconding, and one is imprisoned: Yasin Malik, who was once pampered as a Damaad by New Delhi, invited to the high table as one of the esteemed "stakeholders in the Kashmir peace talks." Yesterday, chargesheet was filed in this case.

Sarla’s case is not isolated. Thousands of women faced similar brutality in Kashmir during the late 1980s and 1990s, leaving behind stories that have been completely erased from the records today.

thinking of pursuing MBBS in georgia. need help.

I am planning to pursue MBBS in Georgia, specifically looking at SEU (Georgian National University) in Tbilisi or BAU International University in Batumi.
i have heard a lot of consultancy streatching it over 70 to 80 lakHs.. BUT ON ONLINE SEARCHES IT SAYS 50 TO 60.. IDK AT THIS POINT.
and my parents are honestly disheartened. consedering kazakhistan and egypt as an option.. (both the countries have a 7+ year plan for mbbs) (I have already attempted neet twice and on top of that a 7+year plan seems too much streatched out. in out kashmiri cultrue above 30 should atleast have one kid or something or a job atleast) i have also heard a lot of other things about them form students there.. I want to talk to someone living and studing currently in either of the universities, SEU and BAU.. and would like to see :

  • What is the actual tuition fee, and how is it paid? (Yearly, semester-wise, installments?)
  • How much did you pay initially before leaving India?
  • What are the monthly living expenses (rent, food, transport, utilities, etc.)?
  • Are there any hidden or unexpected costs?
  • How are the studies, faculty, exams, and overall academic experience?
  • Is there a good Kashmiri community there? If not, how is the Indian student community?
  • Is there anything you wish you had known before choosing Georgia?

IF YOU ARE STUDYING THERE OR HAVE SOMEONE UK THERE.. I WOULD LIKE TO TALK TO THEM

Sarla Bhat: Kashmiri Pandit nurse abducted, raped, tortured, and murdered by JKLF(Kashmiri Muslim Terrorist Organisation )in 1990 — ashes desecrated by a mob, cremation attacked with a grenade. 35 years later, Yasin Malik has been chargesheeted.

In April 1990, JKLF militants abducted 27-year-old Sarla Bhat, a nurse in the neonatology ward at SKIMS hospital in Srinagar, as she walked back to her hostel after her shift. She was held in captivity, where she was raped and tortured, before being shot dead with an automatic rifle and dumped on a roadside in Srinagar.

A neighbour who helped prepare her body wrote that it was bullet-ridden, covered in torture marks, and that it was obvious she’d been violated and sexually assaulted before she died — an account backed by the original post-mortem and cited by Human Rights Watch. (Her family told reporters in 2025 that they understood the post-mortem to have ruled rape out — accounts on this specific point differ, but torture, including cigarette burns on her wrists and neck, is undisputed.) Her body was mutilated, JKLF’s initials were carved into it, and a note was pinned to her claiming the kill and branding her a police informer — a claim investigators have since confirmed was fabricated.

Even her cremation wasn’t left alone. Her family says that as the rites were ending and they went to collect her ashes, a group of at least a hundred men blocked them, refused to let them take the ashes, and stomped and kicked them around in the dirt to defile them — they only managed to grab a handful by force before being driven off. Separately, a grenade was thrown at the family’s house to terrorize them out of mourning her at all. That night, the family fled Kashmir for good — and so did every other remaining Hindu family in the neighborhood.

For 35 years, nobody was charged. That changed on June 29, 2026: J&K’s State Investigation Agency filed a 737-page chargesheet before a special TADA court in Srinagar, naming former JKLF chief Yasin Malik as principal conspirator, along with the alleged shooter (still absconding in Pakistan-administered Kashmir) and three other men since deceased. The chargesheet draws on witness testimony, forensic and ballistic evidence gathered after the case reopened in 2024, and formally ties the killing to a coordinated JKLF campaign to terrorize Kashmiri Pandits out of the Valley.

Umbrella: Not Just for Rain.

Make a better version of it and promote it further. We can help reduce a lot of footfall at the hospitals just by encouraging folks to carry an umbrella on an arid sunny day.

Thank you in anticipation.

My friend and I are planning a 15 day Srinagar trip from 15th July. Can you suggest local places other than famous places as well?

Hi everyone,

My friend and I are planning a 15-day road trip to Srinagar starting on 15th July. We'll be driving our personal car , so we'll have the flexibility to explore nearby areas as well.

We already know about the popular tourist attractions like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens, Doodhpathri, etc. This time, we'd love to explore offbeat places and local experiences that most tourists miss.

We're looking for recommendations on:

  • Hidden gems around Srinagar
  • Scenic drives and lesser-known villages
  • Beautiful meadows, lakes, waterfalls, and viewpoints
  • Easy to moderate day hikes or treks
  • Local cafés and authentic Kashmiri food
  • Places with fewer crowds and great photography opportunities
  • Any unique experiences that locals would recommend

Since we'll have our own car, we're happy to drive a few hours if it's worth it. We'd also appreciate suggestions on roads to avoid, parking tips, or anything we should keep in mind while driving around the region.

If there are any places that are overhyped and can be skipped, we'd love to know that too.

Looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks!

Question about snow season in Gulmarg

Hi all. I’m an Australian traveller who is thinking about coming to Kashmir in December/January to do some snowboarding. I am on a tight budget and I am wondering if there are hostels close to Gulmarg? If so is it possible to get a bus or train to the snowfields each day? Can people stay there for cheap or is it an expensive area? Thank you ☺️
