testing several silent and quiet switches!

testing several silent and quiet switches!

Been in this hobby for almost a decade, but just discovered this sub :)

I have been testing some silent/quiet switches for work in a shared small office. Decided the best way to compare was to slap them all on my board at once.

If anyone wants comparisons or reviews on the switches, let me know!! I have purchased a few more than these, but these are the ones I am most likely to use.

I have tried the Outemu Honey Peach/Lemon Limes and really did not like them. Just cheap feeling and not satisfying. I tried Jerrzi Honey Beans with silicone dampeners, not amazing but had absolutely 0 noise. I do have some TTC Frozen V2s in a box somewhere, but iirc they are very light and felt like the Epomaker Sea Salt silents, so it's maybe more for gamers.

For reference, I wanted to replace the stock Epomaker Sea Salt Silents in this board. At home I have a board with Keygeek Neo Ryes, but my previous board had Gateron Optical Yellows.

List of switches:

  • Stock switches on this board are Epomaker Sea Salt Silents (45gf silent linear) however I replaced my numpad with Kailh Deep Sea Whales (45gf silent tactile)
  • blue housing/white stem: Lichicx Yogurt Silent (45gf silent linear)
  • clear aqua housing/stem: Kailh Box Prestige (42gf silent linear)
  • white housing/blue stem: KTT Phantom (43gf silent linear)
  • grey: Gateron Zero Degree (45gf quiet linear)
  • clear blue housing/clear stem: Kailh Deep Sea Islet (45gf silent linear)
  • beige housing/purple stem: HMX Taro Silent (45gf silent linear)
  • beige housing/butter stem: HMX Butter Silent (37gf silent tactile)

Brief reviews:

Epomaker Sea Salt Silents: extremely muted, but slightly bouncy and mushy-sounding, and I want something with the feel of a linear even if I have to compromise on the noise a bit. I believe these are manufactured by Outemu, but don't quote me

Kailh Deep Sea Whales: 45gf on a tactile is too heavy for me, even tho it's my sweet spot for linears. Kind of a crunchy but quiet sound. Typing on it feels like sneaking on gravel

Lichicx Yogurt Silent: totally silent and muted. Weirdly bouncy and heavy feeling although it's 45gf? It might be due to longer pre-travel. I think my fingers could get fatigued typing on this, but it really is silent and very smooth. I am used to linears under 40gf, so what is fatiguing for me may not be for you.

Kailh Box Prestige and Kailh Deep Sea Islet: extremely similar. They feel great. Box Prestige is slightly lighter (42 vs 45gf) and a smidge quieter. They are both very stable and nice to type on! But because they are so similar, it is a bit hard to choose between them. All other specs seem the same aside from actuation. They're both not totally dampened, but they are very close to silent while feeling like a regular linear. I do think both are a bit scratchy sounding so I will be purchasing a Kailh-style switch opener

KTT Phantom: incredibly similar to the Kailh switches but ever so slightly quieter. Longer total travel makes them feel bouncy and springy to type on with a bit of resistance. Possibly fatiguing for me, but they are fantastic silent switches; they're smooth and stable.

Gateron Zero Degree: sometimes I need to trust my gut over rando internet reviews, and this is evidence of that. Not silent - very crisp high-pitched sound, stem wobble. When I gently rest my fingertips on all the keys, only the Zero Degrees slightly depress, so I wonder if the listed 45gf actuation is accurate. Probably good for gamers.

HMX Taro Silent: it's definitely not silent, though it is quiet. but man this switch is fantastic.... sounds sooo good, creamy, while being much quieter than a regular linear. I do wonder if this could bother my coworkers though. If it does, I'm still gonna buy these for my kb at home. extremely smooth and stable, it both sounds creamy and feels creamy

HMX Butter Silent: this is the loudest of all these switches because of a high-pitched tactile 'pop' when u actuate the switch. It's higher-pitched than the Taros but less than the Zero Degrees. I enjoy typing on this; it's the nicest tactile I've personally tried, but I'm not sure I'd want to put these on my entire keyboard.

Ranked for how much I want to use them in the office is probably:

  1. Kailh Islet or Box Prestige
  2. KTT Phantom or Lichicx Yogurt Silent
  3. Epomaker Sea Salt Silents (bog standard)
  4. HMX taro silent (a smidge loud)
  5. Gateron zero degree (loud and just not that good)
  6. HMX butter silent (too loud)
  7. Kailh deep sea whales (too heavy)

Let me know if you want comparisons or more detail on any switch!

New build with kiiboom phantom 81🫶🏽

Switches: gateron melodic( the only clicky switch that I don’t actually mind) as I tend to gravitate towards thocky tactile switches 😁

XVX Ceramic keycaps, worth it? Or nah?

Any thoughts, opinions, and / or their own personal experience with ceramic keycaps would be appreciated!

It's currently on sale, and I don't know if I should risk it for the biscuit or nah 🧐🤔

The keycaps I wanted didn’t exist, so…

Started with plain keycaps, added nail stickers by hand, and sealed everything with nail top coat.

It started as a little experiment, but I’m really happy with how they turned out 🎀

Best semi-silent switches for the office?

Hi everyone, I recently got a new job where I am in a cubicle setting that is extremely quiet. I got the Yunzii B98 Pro when it was on sale 2 weeks ago, and while I LOVE the sound of the candy switches… It is unfortunately too loud for work and I have to return it which sucks. I have a few different full size keebs I have modded in the past, but wanted to try something new at this point.

I’m looking for a semi silent or quiet switch that is muted yet deep and on the creamy/thocky side if at all possible? Not sure if that exists lol. But I don’t need them completely silent if that makes sense. Budget is around $50-60 for approx. 80+ switches.

After copious amounts of google searching/watching YouTube vids, I wanted your opinions on the following if any of you have it: Keygeek Y2, HMX Moksae, Huano Sakura, TTC Bluish White, Akko Rosewoods, Durock Shrimp T1s, Gateron Milky Yellow Pros, Zero Degree, or Oil Kings.

Switches I currently have for reference:
- Outemu Silent Peach v3’s - smooth but too silent lol
- Outemu Graywoods - too clacky/loud
- Gateron Mint Smoothies - these are on my current keeb & work fine but I just want something different!

Thank you in advance! 😊

Can I change these key caps?

I bought this quiet keyboard from Amazon and I can’t return it now. But I didn’t realize how awkward typing would be on round keys. Does anyone know if I can replace the key caps on this one?? I linked the keyboard below. I tried to see if the keys were removable but idk if they are

Has no one heard of the Love Letter 75?

I came across this board and I tried youtubing reviews of it but there's hardly any videos of it and the videos that do exist all have under 1k views even though they're more than a year old. Has no one ever heard of this board or something? Because it looks and sounds really freaking good.

Lost in a Sea of Switches

Hello everyone! I hope youre all well! I am posting because I have been endlessly looking at keyboard switches and struggling to make decisions. Perhaps some suggestions from you all can help narrow my options down a bit.

I recently purchased the Nuphy Halo 96 v2 with Lemon Switches and I have been loving it! It’s my first personal keyboard purchase and I’ve been super happy with its performance. I enjoy the sound the stock board has, its creamier and thockier than I had expected, though I wouldnt be opposed to a deeper sound profile with even less high/clacky/pingy tones. I love the custom keycap profile as well, it fits my smaller fingers well and feels like quality material under my finger pads. I’m not opposed to changing the keycaps eventually as I know they can affect sound as well but currently I only have the budget for switches. My only issue so far has been that I have been having a LOT of accidental key presses with these Lemon switches and I just feel theyre too light for my fingers as far as preference of feel goes.

I initially chose them after listening to Nuphy’s sound test videos and enjoying the deeper sound, as well as very much wanting a tactile switch over linear. For whatever reason, I just do not like linear switches, I dont like the feel and I miss the tactility badly. I know linear switches are more often recommended for “thock” or deeper profiles but I would very much prefer a hefty tactile and I am okay with having to compromise on sound for this. If the higher, clackier sound is unavoidable, that is okay, I’d just like to reduce it as much as possible.

So I’ve been on the hunt for a heavier tactile than the Lemons with a similar or deeper sound profile. I’ve seen some commonly recommended switches online but honestly, a lot of the posts are from YEARS ago. If theyre still the top dogs for the job, thats great! I know nearly nothing, I’m really new to the custom keyboard market, this is the first board I’ll have ever customized or even changed switches on, so I call to my knowledgable Keeb loving girlies! I know a tiny bit about reading switch specs but I’m not entirely sure why the Lemons feel so light to me, they seem to have a pretty hefty operating and bottom out force compared to other tactile switches that come up a lot. What deep, thocky, tactile switches do you use and love? What part of the specs affect tactility the most and what should I be looking for in “heavy tactile switches”?

Budget: $60 but preferably less

Specs of the Lemons:
- tactile
- operating force: 55±15gf
- end force: 50±5gf
- pre-travel: 2.0±0.5mm
- total travel: 3.6±0.2mm

- stem: pom
- top housing: pc
- bottom housing: pa66

Thank you for your help!

Yunzii C98 Candy Switches

Hi friends. I know this keeb is fairly popular and I've been wanting to treat myself to it for my birthday. Can you tell me your personal pros and cons if you own this? I am also curious if anyone has seen it come on sale for less than $83 USD during black Friday or an Amazon deal day? Or am I just being picky and not stealing the deal while I have the chance?

I work in office 2 days a week with a silent switch keyboard so noise isn't an issue, as I'll use it from home.

TIA!!
