Learning Czech the hard way - thinking about starting a YouTube channel documenting the process.

I've been living in Prague more than a year now. My partner is Czech, and at some point you just get tired of smiling and nodding. So I've decided to actually get serious about learning the language.

As you know already, Czech is brutal if you didn't grow up anywhere near a Slavic language. The cases, the grammar logic, the sounds that don't exist in Spanish (worst in English). It's a completely different mental framework.

I'm thinking about documenting the whole process on YouTube. No teaching, no expertise, just my struggling and (hopefully) slowly getting better.

Would anyone actually watch that? Does seeing someone fail in real time and improve over months feel like something worth following, or is it one of those ideas that sounds good until you realize no one cares?

How should I learn as a beginner?

So I am almost a complete beginner. The thing is, I’m not sure where to go. I’ve tried a few different teachers on italki but didn’t really feel like it helped. I’m thinking of committing to long term tutoring by slowczech, not sure if anyone has experience.

I also have the Cesky krok za krokem book, and my girlfriend speaks fluent Czech, but can not explain any of the grammar etc. what are your thoughts?

Czech Conversation Club

Ahoj! 👋

I had an idea to create a small community where people learning Czech can chat and practice together. The goal is to create a friendly space where you can use Czech without worrying about making mistakes. 🔥

I am Czech native, so I'll be there to guide the discussions, answer questions, and correct mistakes whenever it's helpful.

The group I created is on Telegram, if you want me to add you, send me a private message.

Mějte krásný den! ☀️

Kolik vám bylo když jste zjistili nějakou všeobecně známou informaci o které jste netušili?

Já třeba teď ve 23 letech zjistil, že v Evropě žijí volně v přírodě opice. Sice ne přirozeně ale přece.

Best beginner Czech textbooks for beginners that actually teach you?

I’ve seen a lot of people recommend Czech step by step but through looking at an online version of it all the questions are in Czech and it doesn’t look like there’s much English explanation. Tell me if I’m wrong but is there any other textbooks for complete beginners?

Is going from A1 to C1 within a year possible?

If I have a year left and I'll have to study my degree in complete Czech, do you think it's possible from a native perspective?

Why does autocorrect do this?

I don’t know if you can see the picture well, but I typed “Neznám jména otců.” which (I believe) is a perfectly grammatical sentence (which I believe means “I don’t know the fathers’ names.), but the autocorrect wants to change “otců” to “otcům”. Why does it do this?

Nejsem rodilý Čech, but...

...doesn't the label say that "I have to wash myself before dinner"?

Czech comprehensible input for A1-A2?

Hi everyone! I've been working through Krok za krokem 1 & an Anki frequency deck and have been looking for good comprehensible input for beginners. I love Slowczech but haven't been able to find much other content -- I've been watching some Peppa Pig in Czech which actually has been decently entertaining / exposes you to some pretty good daily-life words, but it is definitely above my level / requires a lot of pausing and looking up words.

Does anyone have any recommendations for A1-A2 comprehensible input that isn't Slowczech? For those of you who have been studying for longer, do you remember what you primarily used as input during this time?

Help translation

I saw a writer putting Czech dialogues in his story. I'd like to hear the translation from native and how natural those dialogues are. Apparently, the author dropped some diacritics. Here're they:

Sestro Lenko, sestro Věro, tento cestovatel by si rád uvaril něco k jídlu v kuchyni. Prosím, pomozte mu se vsím, co bude potrebovat.

Chce varit v kuchyni, matko Miloslavo?

Ano. Pomáhá nám s varením.

Muzes se ho zeptat, v cem se jeptisky na jihu lisí od nás? Docela by mě zajímalo.

Ríkal, ze jeptisky na jihu nejsou o nic vrelejsí nez my, protoze patrí k jinému vyznání.

To ríká spousta cestovatelu. Jeptisky na jihu jsou opravdu jiné nez my. Hrozne by me zajímalo, cím se lisí. Muzes se ho na to zeptat?

Ríkal, ze sám porádně neví, jak to popsat.

Best Resources For A Beginner

Hello, recently, I’ve become interested in learning Czech, and wanted to know what resources would be best. I live in the states and have no experience learning any Eastern or Central European Languages. If possible, I would prefer ways to learn for free/little money (like YouTube channels, free apps, or English to Czech Dictionaries), though any help is appreciated.

Czech words and sentences I might need in a car repair shop?

Hi,

I'll get my oil and coolant fluid changed for my car but I'll probaby need other things in the future. I look up things on the internet but I don't feel confident on the direct translations I find online. There might be other words people use in a car repair shop. I definitely dont expect car shops to know English so I'll rely on my intermediate czech.

What words and sentences do you use in Czech for these things? Feel free to recommend more if there are any repeating phrases in situations like these.

"I'd like an appointment for my car."

"I need an engine oil change."

"I need the cooland fluid to change"

"I need to change the tires".

"Can you check the car for anything unusual?"

"Have you seen any rust underneath?"

Also how do you even say a "car repair shop"? Like, a mechanic?
