Employment Opportunities for Folks with Special Needs/disabilities

Hi everyone,

I work with individuals with special needs/disabilities who are looking for employment opportunities in the Lincoln area, and I wanted to ask if anyone knows of local businesses or employers who are open to inclusive hiring.

Many individuals are paired with a job coach who helps with training, staying on task, and meeting workplace expectations. Ability levels vary quite a bit — some people are capable of semi-complex tasks and independent work, while others do best with structured tasks like sorting, stocking, cleaning, organizing, matching items, etc.

We’re especially looking for employers who value patience, consistency, and giving people a chance to succeed. Even a few hours a week can make a huge difference.

If you know of businesses, organizations, or workplaces that have been supportive of employees with disabilities, I’d really appreciate recommendations. Thanks!

Adult drawing classes

I've hunted a bit and haven't found anything that's quite what I'm looking for. I want an adult class (kids are fine, I just don't want it to be weird that I'm there), but specifically not private lessons. I'm looking for as low a level as possible, whatever one step above "I've never seen a pencil in my life" would be, despite being able to draw somewhat, since I've never taken a class specific to it. Everything I've found seems to have expectations for your ability going into it.

Is this something that exists anywhere?

Relocating for work

Hello all!

My boyfriend and I are relocating for his work in August. We are 26 & 27, we love going out on the weekends. We are big into golf & fishing as well!

We are originally from Cleveland OH! We are currently in Davenport IA, and we both are not too big of fans of the city. We've been here a year and it's just stagnant, the people are rude, job market is atrocious. We are used to a really great food scene, and of course a thriving sports fans base.

2 things we are super excited for is the food scene in Lincoln and the college sports teams!

I'm looking for recommendations for apartments, around 1.2k with decent living space- allows cats (we have 1). Would prefer in unit laundry! If there are any good contenders under that price too, we would love to know! I am asking especially because we had to move to Iowa rather quick and ended up in a not-so-nice neighborhood. I want to make sure we do it right this time! We LOVE the grove apartment homes. We will be taking time to go look at a couple places in a few weeks here so I'm trying to line a few places up.

Please let me know any other things we should be aware about! ☺️

Edit: also if anyone knows of any office jobs hiring (7am-3pm) I currently work at a car dealership in the office and I'll be looking for work in Lincoln! I have been in the service industry for most of my career but in the last year switched to be on the same schedule as my boyfriend! I was a restaurant manager for the last 6 years!

Looking for a coffee spot in Lincoln that I can order a gift card for my sister.

I’m a born and bred Nebraskan, but I live in California now. My sister lives in Lincoln and her birthday is coming up and I would like to give her a coffee gift card and not from Starbucks.

What local coffee spot is your favorite? That way I can contact them and ask about getting a gift card sent to her. Thanks!

More BikeLNK stations

Why aren't there more BikeLNK stations throughout the city? I understand the largest market is people in college and in denser, more walkable areas, but seeing other bike share networks expand while ours has barely grown is frustrating. I would love to use the system, but I don't have a station near my neighborhood anymore. What is stopping them from expanding to more parks and neighborhoods? I could see a case for even suburban stations like SouthPointe. It seems like you see a lot about Heartland Bike Share in Omaha and their expansion. I would love to see more. Where else could they put stations?

Salvation Army

I already I also looked in the search for this group, but I couldn’t find much. Where is the Salvation Army currently at to shop at for some reason I’m thinking the 27th location is not a thrift store on Google and their website it’s saying it’s 4960 Leighton St. by the newer apartments on 48th and Leighton but now it looks like the building it was in is completely torn down. I just drove over there is the location on 27th St. a thrift store as well? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Thanks

SCC Lincoln nursing program info🌱🌱

Does anyone know how many UA tests the ADN students get in the program for clinicals at different locations? My daughter is in the program and passed the initial urine test upon acceptance but uses ointment on her elbow/arm from an injury and it has TH🌱in it. I say she should talk to the teachers but she’s too scared and I guess rightfully so since it isn’t legal in Nebraska. Can anyone advise? Thx

What Has Been Your Experience with Visible Phone Service?

Hi all,

I know there are regular posts about cell service here, but I wanted to get direct feedback around Visible.

I'm currently on Verizon but I saw that Visible has an annual plan that seems to fit my needs for $375. I'm currently paying almost $300/month at Verizon, so a but more than that covering an entire YEAR seems like a no-brainer.

Is there a catch? What has your experience been with the service? Are there any noticeable issues i should take into consideration?

I don't travel a lot and I spend most of my time in cities.

I'm using the 15 day trial at Visible right now so I'll have some experience with it.

If there is any reason I shouldn't switch, let me know?

Thanks!

Since it's tornado season, let's talk a little preparedness.

Something so many people overlook is a GTFO bag for tornados, house fires or other emergency that you & your family need to leave or take shelter right the f now. A family of 3 could use an old duffelbag, scale up & down as appropriate. You can grab the pre-packed bag from your closet in any emergency. This isn't intended to be a survival bag, but rather a resource for the family to use in the first few hours immediately after a tornado, house fire, or other emergency where you have to leave or take shelter in a hurry. The goal is to be able to sling this over a shoulder and snag a kiddo over the other and get out right away.

- A plan for the family to meet at a predetermined spot nearby. Especially handy for children in case of a fire 'Meet at Mr. Smith's house across the street' type of spot; not right next door as thats too close to danger but not too far like the gas station down the street. Adults could go with the gas station in Ceresco if everyone is more adultish & spread out.

- A change of clothes, with old shoes. Change the clothing to be appropriate for the season. Winter include stocking caps, gloves, and sweatshirt/hoodie for each person-dont assume they'll have their winter coat.

  • If at all possible 3 days of prescription meds.

- 2-3 bottles of water per person.

- Non-perishable snacks, Cliff bars or similar that can stay in there for 6-12 months easily. Don't forget something for the pets to eat and a leash for each.

- A pair of work gloves to deal with debris for each adult.

- Hammer, prybar, rope (optional)

- A whistle, small like a sports referee would use. Useful if stuck in a tornado shelter or if you need people nearby to find you.

- A poncho for each person.

- A radio, crank rechargeable, or battery powered with extra batteries.

- A few small flashlights, with extra batteries if not hand-crank.

- A wall plug-in & cig lighter and charging cord for phones.

-Cash, small bills. No one's gonna have change, so if you only have a Benjamin and need a 5 gallon can of gas to get to your destination... thats an expensive can of gas...but if you had $100 in $1 bills you could pay a reasonable price. I've built up to $500 over the years in denominations $10 and lower.

- An encrypted USB thumb drive with copies of important documents, photos, contacts, etc. This will help immensely when rebuilding your life after seeing your home(and those documents/items) turned to rubble. This will take time to make. It's not an afternoon project. Bank account info & statements, rental/mortgage docs, auto policy/homeowners/life insurance docs, 401k/IRA statements, employment docs, pictures of your household like furniture, kitchen goods clothes jewelry etc. family photos pics of your cars, copy of your will, website passwords, and so on. You can call your insurance agent and ask what images or documents are needed for a typical total loss house claim and start with that and build from there. I have 3 of these I update every 6 months; one is in the bag, another in my car, and the third is at another location far away. Install the encryption software on the drive(both Windows & Mac versions), but in an unencrypted portion so you can plug it into any computer, install the software and access it. Leave a clue in a text file for the password so a family member can access it in case you & your family perish to help with settling the estate. I used an old family landmark that no longer exists as the password; in-laws, friends, or random people wouldn't have a clue, but a sibling or cousin would solve it.

Please take what you want & leave the rest as you want to suit your household's needs.

Question about tractors.

Does anybody know what the rules are for legally driving a tractor around the city i have been driving her for a month until a Lincoln police officer said it was an illegal vehicle and is not suppose to be on the road yet I've had about 30 police officers either look at it or drive past and say nothing I've been using her instead of a car since I lost my driver's license.

Anyone in Lincoln have a copy of this newspaper?

hey sorry! this is my first time ever posting on reddit so new user alert!

trying to help my adopted sibling obtain a legit physical copy of the LA Times from today (May 19). but since we live in good ol Lincoln, Ne its not like we can go down to the nearest corner store or such to get one.

they would preferably like it "unspoiled" as they put it. meaning, read and all that, but no missing pages or parts, no writing, coffee stains lol, whatev.

we have tried calling libraries and nobody has a physical copy, just digital/online copies. and they (my sib) doesn't want to "print" a copy out. they can go online and buy a physical back issue but its like $15!

we're wondering if anyone living in lincoln has a copy of this specific newspaper from that date that they'd be willing to part with?

Low stakes opportunity to meet new friends

I see a lot of posts on here about how/where to make friends as an adult in Lincoln. I'm having a lil event at Jake's Cigars and Beercade Jr on Saturday 3-7pm. If you're new to town or simply looking to meet other adults with common interests, come find me! For the most part, we are into art, niche hobbies, video games and board games, crafting, tattoos, music, etc. The best part of what I do is watching random friendships form. No entry fee, but I recommend grabbing a drink from the bar (they have NA options, too).
