Celestial Bodies- Josephine Scully 2026

finally had the courage to put my large scale prints up in cafes and at fairs - these ones are 3ft wide and 4.5 ft tall at least - feels way more vulnerable to share these than the ones that are easy for me to make and cheap - would love advice from anyone who does large scale printing and how you balance time and materials in terms of pricing

New Day Linden (Reduction Linocut)

Slavic people have held (well, some still might) a folk belief that their souls were bound to a linden tree. A linden tree would be planted to celebrate birth of a child and under them they would hold all important village meetings and celebrations. There is something embracing about them. They are gaudy yet humble. Inviting without revealing themselves.

The print was made in five stages. I've used Caligo safe wash ink on Hereford 140gsm printmaking paper and most of the carving was done with small Michihamono U tool.

First lino ever

I did practice woodcut print about 20 years ago in College...

Lately I felt like I wanted to try lino, seemed similar but easier. Also, I just learned that now there are water based inks!!! 🥳 Made cleaning instant!

Question:

How to avoid inking the surrounding edge? I've seen linoleum being cut around the silhouette of the art. But then, how do I keep register marks? Thinkg ahead for/if I print more than one color.

Archaeopteryx print

I finally finished this block and I'm really proud of it.

(Apologies to the mods, I tried to upload a video of the print but it kept failing)

Two headed Snake!

Watch out! It’s a two headed Danger Noodle. Yet another little design for my partners card game. Really enjoying these small and bold prints! 🐍

‘The Big Day’ [OC]

This is a print featuring me on my big day, waving my wedding bouquet at the traffic.

There was always something so joyful about riding on the back platform of an old London bus and that’s why it felt so brilliant to hire one for my wedding day!

What's the largest woodblock print you've ever seen, carved, or printed yourself?

Here are some photos of the largest block I've ever carved!

I've been thinking a lot about scale lately and how it changes the whole process — from finding a block big enough, to managing ink coverage, to the physical effort of printing. Curious what the r/printmaking community has experienced on the larger end of the spectrum.

Did you seek out a big format intentionally, or did a project just grow beyond what you expected? How did you handle registration, pressure, and inking at that size? And if you've seen a large woodblock print in person — whether in a museum, gallery, or a fellow printmaker's studio — what made it memorable?

Photos very welcome!
