City Hall backs 'Bill of Rights' for bus drivers

All 21 assembly members in attendance at City Hall unanimously backed a motion to introduce a "Bill of Rights" to protect bus drivers and offer workers more support in heatwave conditions.

On Thursday, Reform UK Assembly Member Keith Prince laid down a motion proposing the measure, which includes a dozen key principles.

It calls for bus drivers to have access to toilets on all bus routes, rest breaks, no forced overtime, the right to report safety concerns without fear of punishment and working air-cooling and heating systems.

Last week London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan promised drivers more support to help them cope with the extreme hot weather.

He told the LDRS that bus drivers who feel their bus is too hot "shouldn't be driving their buses and they will not be penalised for [not] doing so".

During London's heatwave last month, temperatures soared up to 50C in some drivers' cabs, it was claimed, while many bus drivers worked with faulty air-conditioning and air-cooling systems.

Unite the union has accused one of London's largest operators, Arriva, of "putting profits before people" and failing to invest in better cooling systems.

It also alleges that Transport for London and Sir Sadiq are not doing enough to protect drivers and continue to put their safety at risk.

Prince said: "We have seen drivers having to drive with their shirts off, drivers that don't have anywhere to go to the loo. Something needs to be done."

"While it's important we are able to get to work and buses run on time, it's equally important we are not driving these bus drivers to such levels of fatigue that they make human errors."

Sir Sadiq Khan suspended bus performance contracts during heatwaves so drivers would not be penalised for delays

TfL's director of buses Lorna Murphy said in a statement: "Bus drivers play an essential role in keeping the capital moving. Alongside bus operators, we take their safety and welfare seriously and we rightly require operators to meet high standards.

"We are working together on a range of measures to further improve working conditions, health and wellbeing. We are committed to ensuring that all staff have a fair work schedule, with safe vehicles and access to the facilities they need to carry out their roles effectively. We regularly engage with Unite the union on these matters.

"We would like to reassure colleagues again that any reports from drivers are always fully investigated, and our operators should never take action against people raising concerns about welfare."

A spokesperson for Arriva London said: "All of our London buses are fitted with cab air-cooling systems. Cooling technology has developed significantly over the lifespan of a bus fleet and there's no straightforward way to retrofit newer technology.

"We're actively working with vehicle manufacturers to explore what improvements can be made. Driver safety and welfare is a priority for us."

'Sweltering heat'

A Bus Driver Bill of Rights petition was submitted in February 2025 by Caroline Russell, leader of the Green Party in the London Assembly.

She said: "In Paris last week, a bus driver was overcome by heat and crashed into a tree.

"That single moment says a lot about what happens when conditions become unbearable. Drivers have been working in sweltering heat [in recent weeks]."

Nearly 2,000 bus drivers across 10 depots in north and east London are being balloted over a potential strike due to "unbearable" heatwave conditions.

This ballot opened on 1 July and will stay open until 29 July.

Unite has warned that any strike action will lead to severe delays and cancellations.

2 and a half years late

Well it's only been 2 and a half years since these buses were meant to enter service but the Wright Electroliners have finally entered service on the 289.

These not so new buses feature charging (some are broken), two skylights on the upper deck, 3 iBus displays (some buses have issues with the displays), high back seats and a much nicer ride than the Enviro400s prior.

Now if you think some of the fleetcodes & reg plates look similar its because most of these buses actually came from Arriva London North who had priority over Thornton Heath. The Volvo BZLs have now finally arrived at Tottenham which allowed for the release of these buses.

My personal opinions are a little mixed. These buses are a massive step up from the crappy old E400s and I really like the design BUT for some reason the people of North London decided to near enough trash the buses so the backs of some seats are very rattly, the chargers on some buses are broken and (something that seems to occur across lots of Arriva Electroliners) the iBus is broken.

I'd give these buses an 8/10 as they are a massive step up and I really do like these buses but they are a little trashed, have some faults and brake very harshly

Does anyone know why the newer BYD BD11s have tilting LED screens on them

I have noticed why do the newer BYD BD11 EVs buses that have the 75/26 reg on them have tilting LED screens, is there a reason why this is. Let me know in the comments.

Do the new C11 and 143 buses really have no air conditioning?

These new electric buses seem to be the standard now on the C11 and 143 routes and I thought they seemed pretty good when they arrived but now the heat has been here I've never been on one with any air coming through vent holes in the roof. Did TFL really splash out on new electric buses in this day and age and neglect to get any sort of air conditioning? Or has there been some sort of fleet-wide fault?

Questions for the bus drivers of london.

Hello all. for years I have pondered on the wonders and mystery of how the london bus drivers can function in the bustling city of London. Through the stress of the underground strikes putting up with people who are mad at something that is far beyond your control, to the early hours of the morning on the weekend reluctantly having to stop for that one individual who's jaw defies the laws of physics after a rave/concert and having to navigate your bus route through what could only be designed by a psychopath wanting their house to be included in the bus route.

Here are some of (not all) the mysteries that I think of when I ride that big red beautiful automotive:

Stopping:

When does a bus driver decide when their bus is too full to stop at said bus stop and deliberately and conveniently stop further away to let passengers off before setting off for the next stop ? If two people get off an obviously at max capacity bus does one judge if pedestrians awaiting passage at said bus stop can fit? Also does the time it takes from starting position to the finish stop affect the payment of the bus driver ?

Safety:

I understand that London can be a rough and potentially dangerous place at times and I must say from a individual who has worked numerous years in bars and clubs in the past, my apologies to the driver of those buses, we are partly to blame for those somewhat barely human shapes that enter your vehicle after the bars close. But my question is how your company protects you from certain altercations? If there is a huge fight on your bus do you intervene or are you given a set protocol to follow when things get out of hand? I have been on a bus when the driver has pressed their panic button but nothing happened for a good while before finally the police arrived. How secure is the door between you and the public and how much can you see of the public when driving the bus. Multi tasking whilst driving is already pretty dangerous and you essentially have 100 drunk adult sized children in your back seats that you have to watch.

Schedule:

In my job I work incredibly varied shifts in regards to times. One day I will be working a 9 till 5 the next 1 in the morning till 10 at night. Not glamorous but it has its pros. My question is when checking the schedules of the bus times be it citymapper or Google maps or even tfls own website. Why are some bus routes notorious for either not showing up or not being on time. One comes to mind which is one route which is the bane of my life the 274. On paper a beautiful route(slightly congested in the busy areas) but a direct route through some of my favorite areas in London. You check your app, 2 minutes. Cool. 2 minutes later it changed to 30 minutes. What happened!? Did the driver give up? And vice versa. 30mins? Ughh okay I'll wait. You roll a cigarette. Oh it's here ! Classic

Bus routes:

On another topic that the casual driver may not know and my last question because I could go on forever (i.may make another post) who what how why is a route created? What is justification for certain stops ? Why are some stops requests stops ? Why do some have shelters and some have nothing ? How do they decide the numberings for buses and why aren't all buses the same model ( some double Decker some not)

In conclusion I love the chaos behind the TFL buses of London and we may of a group constantly complain about them but at the end of the day I have full respect for the drivers and without them we would end up in a city of anarchy and bloodlust when the tubes strike. God speed bus drivers of london and if there are any secrets and stories you could tell to us that would be welcome

Dark Mode has arrived for TfL Go (iOS)

I'm excited to announce that TfL Go now supports Dark Mode on iOS. After a bit of a hiccup where we accidentally released part of this last week without the proper settings, today with v3.14.0 you can choose to follow the System setting, or force TfL Go into Dark or Light mode depending on your preference.

We're also really keen to get feedback on this, so in the settings area where you can choose the mode, there's a link to a short survey - please fill it out and tell us what works, what doesn't so we can bring improvements.

For the Android users out there, we haven't forgotten you, but we have some foundational work to do before we're able to bring this, so please be patient with us.

Which operator is better to work as electronics engineer or bus driver?

As a bus enthusiast, I might consider working for a London bus operator in the future just to gain further industrial experience. I wonder which one of these operators are the best to work with as a person that is coming from diverse background? Go Ahead London, Metroline, First Bus London, Arriva London, Stagecoach London or Transport UK?

Spotted a London Bus in Kenilworth, Warwickshire

It was at the station and all the trains are cancelled so possibly it’s a rail replacement bus, although no one was in it.

New bus route ideas - 335 (revised), 420 and 457

1: Updated bus no. 335 (North Greenwich - Sidcup Station)

- Route: North Greenwich - Millennium Village - IKEA - skips Royal Standard along A2 - Shooters Hill Road/Kidbrooke Park Road - Kidbrooke Park Road - Kidbrooke Station - Kidbrooke Village - Sutcliffe Park - Sidcup Road - Mottingham - Southwood Road - New Eltham - Longlands - Main Road - Station Road - Sidcup Station

- Length: 15 km

- Garage: still Dartford (DT)

- New PVR: 13

- Actions: equip Sidcup Road with new bus stops, reroute 335 away from Wingfield School, deck B16 in exchange (double deckers are quite common on this route)

- Why so: there is only service between Kidbrooke and Sidcup (286), and it goes via Eltham and Avery Hill, not stepping into Kidbrooke Village, despite Kidbrooke Park Road literally turning into Sidcup Road after crossing Eltham Road. Let alone no service between North Greenwich and Sidcup. Many southeastern bus routes are quite long themselves. Besides, the route 335 was meant to be express initially.

2: New route 420 (New Cross Gate (Sainsbury’s) - Chislehurst War Memorial)

- Route: New Cross Gate - Lewisham Way - Lewisham Station - Lewisham Station - Lewisham Centre - Hither Green Lane - St Mildred’s Road - Westhorne Avenue - Sidcup Road (finally, a bus route that serves this road!) - Mottingham Station - Fiveways - William Barefoot Drive - White Horse Hill - Red Hill - Chislehurst

- Length: 14 km

- Most likely garages: Catford (TL) or New Cross (NX)

- Likely PVR: 12

- Why so: only route to serve between Lewisham and Chislehurst is 273, and it’s an extremely convoluted hail & ride route served by low-frequency single door single deckers. Hither Green Lane and William Barefoot Drive are currently only served by 181/225 and 314 respectively, which are all single-deck routes. Sidcup Road hasn’t got any bus service despite it only turning into an expressway after Fiveways Junction. It’s even got pedestrian crossings, so why not equipping it with some bus stops along it?

3: New route 457 (Brixton - Elmers End)

- Route: Brixton - Brixton Hill - Streatham Hill Station - Leigham Court Road (!!!) - Crown Point - Beulah Hill - South Norwood Hill - Norwood Junction - Portland Road - Long Lane - Elmers End

- Length: 13 km

- Most likely garage: Norwood (N)

- Likely PVR: 14

- Purpose: add a missing connection, relieve the route 417 (since it gets crowded on Leigham Court Road), give Brixton and Norwood Junction another connection than just 196

Bus usage during hot weather

I get the feeling less people use buses during hot weather. Are there statistics to prove this? Or is it just me. I wouldn't be surprised as it was cooler outside the bus i was on yesterday than inside
