Birdwatching Mayo

Does anyone know some good spots for birdwatching in Mayo? In particular, I’d love if there was somewhere with a birdwatching hide/shelter like the ones you can find in some nature reserves in some other counties. Thanks!

Moving to Castlebar - Filipino community, Asian grocery stores, and restaurants?

Hi everyone!

I'm a Filipino allied health professional who will be relocating from the Philippines to Castlebar, with a tentative move around September 2026 for work.

I was wondering if there is a Filipino community in Castlebar or elsewhere in Mayo. Are there any Filipino groups, organizations, or gatherings that newcomers can join?

I'm also curious about Asian grocery stores in or near Castlebar. Is there a decent selection of Filipino or Asian ingredients, or do most people travel to Galway or order online?

Lastly, how is the Asian food scene? Are there many Asian restaurants (Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, etc.) in Castlebar or nearby?

I'm also starting to look for shared accommodation near Barcastle Retail Park for my move. If anyone knows of available rooms or has recommendations on where to look, I'd really appreciate it.

I'd really appreciate any advice or tips from locals or anyone living in the area. Thanks in advance!

Ireland roadtrip: Newcastle to Galway suggestions

During our one-week elopement trip, we are traveling from Newcastle (Northern Ireland) to Galway in one day. Instead of connecting in Dublin and taking M6, we want to take a more scenic route and are planning to go up and around (through Enniskillen) so we can do a little bit of the coast. We're aware this will add a few hours to the drive.

Any recommendations of country/coastal towns and attractions to stop by or scenic roads to take on our way to Galway? From our research we've read of Clifden, Dog's Bay, and Roundstone (don't think we'll have time for Connemara National Park). We're totally up for something off the beaten path, but don't want to go too far out of the way since we only have a day and would like to get to Galway by dinner time.

Ouch!

Happened during the week in Ballina, Co. Mayo.

Unsure if the handbrake was left off or the jeep was accidentally put in reverse.

Physio recommendation for running injury?

Hi everyone, I hope you are all having a great week. I would be very grateful if someone could recommend a good physiotherapist in Castlebar or elsewhere in Mayo, as I need help with a persistent running-related Achilles injury.

I'm thinking of joining the Army and I need to pass the fitness assessment.

Jewellery repair in Mayo

Hi all, just wondering if anyone could recommended a place that repairs jewellery?

I have a little metal medal that's practically worthless but holds a lot of sentimental value that I'd love to have fixed.

Thanks in advance.

Rent continues to rise

I started making plans last year to move to Mayo for 2 years to study at Westport FET as a mature student, and have been trying to find student accommodation since January but still have been unable to secure a place where the landlord was not either completely overbearing and intended to micromanage me like I was their child (very unhealthy parasocial relationship to have with a landlord).

Or alternatively, having to take a room under the table without proper paperwork. Lastly the few places that did offer were asking to pay €800 + Expenses + €50.00 for use of the kitchen as an added cost AND the landlord would be housesharing on top of that.

I'm checking Daft.ie every single day for listings, and reaching out to landlords as soon as possible but even at that rooms are gone before I even get a reply back. Before you comment, yes I did already contact the college and yes I already contact ATU Mayo too. Yes I am also checking Westport/Castlebar Accommodation on Facebook too. Yes I have contacted Hawthorn village and they're basically fully booked unless they receive a cancellation.

I've reached out to 37 people across the Westport/Castlebar area who normally would offer student accommodation. So Far 23 have said they had no rooms. 9 never got back to me and 2 offered rooms at €800 per month and 3 said they might get back to me.

I've seen now on Daft.ie that between March - June the rental rate has exploded from €485.00 per month to now €600-€700.00 per month and that's for a shared house, with the landlord. The adverts also are starting to have less information. Some Landlords are not listing their names at all, not taking photo's of the property (bar either the outside of the building or just the bedroom). This makes things so unsafe for me as a tenant since there is also a rise in scam adverts or under the table contracts which I just cannot deal with when I'm trying to focus on studying.

I work part-time since I had to cut my hours to meet eligibility criteria for Jobseekers and I am ineligible for back to education allowance and SUSI. I currently am waiting for Jobseekers to get back to me and only earn about €1300.00 per month currently. So over half my income would just be going to my rent in the current market. The only way I could afford these rooms as a student would be to get subsidised from my parents who would have to split the rent costs with me each month (both my parents are also retired and would have difficulties covering the cost of my rent every month).

Or beg like crazy for Rental Supplement with Jobseekers (which I may not even be eligible for if they think my part-time employment is paying my means too high). The market is so frustrating and I'm beyond furious at the governments rental reset plan it was an absolute disaster and has made things a million times worse.

Visiting Westport this weekend

The wife & I are visiting Westport this weekend and looking for some good fish & chips, some trad music, and hiking. Any suggestions? Some places to go dance would be a sweet bonus.

Swimming in Westport

Hi there! I’m new enough to the area and was wondering where are some good places to swim now that we got a bit of nice sun :) I’ve seen people swim in the point but unsure of anywhere else, open to drive of course!
