Birthday ideas

Hi!

Tuesday is my birthday and Usually we’d do a pool/beach day plus dinner by the water. It’s going to rain all day. We need some ideas on what to do locally!! I’m in my lower 30s and 6months pregnant, so that impacts our activities!

Any ideas on something fun or different to do?

Lemonade quest

Hello! It's hot! Does anyone have leads on a north shore spot (coffee shop/restaurant etc) that has very good lemonade/makes it in-house by chance?

Annual Pet Reminder

I know this heat wave is coming at a time of travel and big events but please also remember your pets during this week as well. Small accidents happen that lead to tragedy and with vigilance we can prevent it.

Be sure to check your home frequently, or have someone check if you’re away, that the air conditioner is still functioning in this heat if you have pets at home. Many times air conditioners can malfunction in this level of heat while pets are inside and the owner is at work or away. For this heatwave make sure you’re checking in. Again accidents happen!

Short leash walks only for pups or early morning/evening walks. It’s way too hot for outdoor family fun for them right now. Remember, their core body temperatures are already warmer than ours and they wear coats.

Many stores such as Home Depot, Petsmart, PetCo, and breweries allow dogs if you need somewhere to take your pup for the day if you don’t have cooling elements in your home.

Keep plenty of fresh water out for them!

There are some breeds of higher risk than others. It’s best to practice this safety with all breeds.
This includes cats too!

Symptoms of heat stroke in animals is the following:
- excessive panting
- unable to settle
- breathing with their belly
- increased heart rate
- bright red or blue/purple gums/gray gums
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- unsteady walking
- collapsing

We love our pets they are beloved. Take care of them and each other. Happy Summer Stay Safe

Almost got hit riding a bike in Swampscott

Was riding my bike back home, and this Acura car almost hits me and my friend, passing and honking by us going about 40 mph in a residential zone. It happened near the T station (No more than a mile away). They even cursed at us (And made racist remarks if I recall correctly).

Be careful when you bike in the Northshore yall. Some drivers are crazy. Sadly there's no video evidence so I don't think a police report can be made with Swampscott PD.

North Shore-ish World Cup watching

Living in Denver now, and visiting family in Massachusetts. Want to go out and watch the US game tonight. My friends are all mostly located in the North Shore area and, if possible, would like to avoid going into the city to watch (I've been going to the Anchor in Charlestown for most of the other games).

Any decent outdoor viewing places that have a big screen in the North Shore area?

Nahant Beach Swimming

Is it safe to swim at Nahant beach today with the ongoing sewage issues? DCR website says the shore along Lynn isn’t safe, but Nahant is? They are so close it seems strange….

Moving to Rockport - What are the people like?

I’m very close to being approved for renting a small year-round home in Rockport, and I’d love some honest perspective from people familiar with the area.

For background, I’m in my early 30s, work remotely, and have always been more introverted. I enjoy a quieter lifestyle, things like walking, getting coffee, reading, writing short stories, and having a slower daily routine. I’m not looking for a big nightlife or high-energy environment, but I do appreciate friendly interactions and feeling like I belong somewhere.

I’ve lived in Denver for the last 4 years, Nashville for 2, and Columbus, OH for 1. I’m really craving a small coastal town atmosphere and a slower pace of life. I grew up in a small lake town in Michigan, so the winter, quiet seasons, and changing pace throughout the year are actually part of what appeals to me.

I’ve spent a lot of time researching the North Shore and Rockport specifically, looking at photos, videos, street views, and trying to understand what it’s actually like year-round rather than just during the tourist season. The character of Rockport, especially in the winter, really stands out to me.

The one thing I keep seeing mentioned occasionally is that Rockport can be very insular and that newcomers may have a difficult time feeling welcomed. I completely understand that small towns have their own culture and long-time residents, but I’m curious how true that reputation is.

For example, if I became a regular at a local coffee shop, took walks around town, and people eventually learned I wasn’t originally from the area, would that generally be viewed negatively? Or is it more that it takes time to become part of the community?

If you wouldn’t recommend Rockport for someone looking for this kind of lifestyle, are there other North Shore towns you think would be a better fit? I’ve also looked closely at places like Marblehead, Salem (visited Salem a lot - absolutely adore the homes and cobblestone streets), and Newburyport, but I really love the island/coastal feel of Rockport.

I’d appreciate any honest advice or perspective from people who know the area.

Salem Screens

I moved to Salem from San Francisco two years ago and am psyched to be starting up a film presentation org here, much like what I've been doing in SF for almost 30 years. I'm calling it Salem Screens and the first show is July 16-19 at Cinema Salem, a series of 5 new films from Ireland. I'm planning to share info here and on the salem reddit forum about the films, and am hoping folks can attend. I'm offering discounts for Cinema Salem and Athenaeum members and all shows have a $5 "movies for all" ticket for EBT/Snap card holders. After the Irish series, I have another series planned for September called Critter Fest, a weekend of films about animals, pets, wildlife. If posting about the shows is inappropriate for this forum, please let me know!

The Midnight Bookseller is Officially Open in Salem!

Hi Everyone! After months of renovations, planning, and an incredible amount of support from this community, we're very excited to announce that The Midnight Bookseller is officially open for business!

We're an independent and queer woman-owned bookstore that specializes in fantasy, horror, gothic romance, and anything magical or weird. We have young adult and children's sections along with our primarily adult selection of books, and lots of bookish gifts to choose from!

Currently we're in our soft opening phase while we get our legs underneath ourselves and any kinks sorted out before Salem's busy season. We're still adding inventory and making improvements to the store based on community request, so we'd love to have you visit and let us know what you'd like to see in the space!

Book clubs, RPG nights, craft workshops, and author events are incoming soon, so keep an eye out on our IG for updates!

Our current hours are Wednesday-Sunday 11AM-7PM, and you can find us at 116B North Street.

Our grand opening celebration weekend is scheduled for July 24-26, and is filled with events, in-store activations, and collaborations with some of our small business neighbors (*cough cough* North Street Tattoo and Konna Cafe!!!).

Thank you to everyone who has offered advise, shared our kickstarter this spring, and come into the store in our first week since opening! We are so proud and excited to call Salem our home.

July 4th Gas

A survey done over the July 27 -28 weekend shows that gasoline is averaging 63 cents / gallon cheaper in Red states than in Blue states. Fill up in a Red state before you go or plan your trip to fill up in Red states as you travel.

Plumbing fixture installation serving Reading MA

I need to replace a bathroom vanity/sink, upgrade a kitchen sprayer, and get some general plumbing fixture advice before I buy. I would likely want to also use them for plumbing emergencies if they come up. Any recommendations near me?

Anna Jacques vs Beverly Hospital

I’m currently 30 weeks pregnant and have been seeing midwifes at Beverly hospital (Essex obgyn midwife group) and the experience has been great so far. I hired a doula and she said she prefers her clients deliver at Anna Jaques over Beverly especially since Im hoping to labor in water (trying for an unmedicated natural birth if possible) and that Beverly hospital lacks availability for the tubs if you want one. I also saw that Anna Jaques has the lowest c-section rate as well… I’m touring both of the birth centers soon so I can make my final decision. Has anyone given birth at Anna Jaques or Beverly hospital as unmedicated and felt supported throughout the process? curious to hear everyone’s experiences at both of these hospital.

Beach guide?

My husband and I just moved to the north shore and are looking for a good beach for couples with no kids. We want something quiet (I know that's difficult) with more of a nature/secluded feel. We don't need to be near bathrooms or any amenities. Would prefer not to have to reserve parking ahead of time like some places do but also don't want to be driving around or waiting endlessly for a spot. Okay with a bit of a walk if needed. Would like somewhere more sandy than rocks.
