I built a free tool to help roommates organize cleaning—would this help your household?

When you share a home, figuring out whose turn it is to clean the bathroom or kitchen can become a recurring conversation—and sometimes one person ends up doing most of it.

I’m the developer of OneRoofShare, a free website I built to make those responsibilities easier to organize.

You can:

  • Create a household and invite your roommates.
  • Add shared areas, chores, and cleaning checklists.
  • Schedule cleaning turns on a shared calendar.
  • Record completed work so everyone can see what’s been done.

It won’t make an unwilling roommate clean, but I hope it helps households that want a routine without constantly chasing updates.

You can try it here: https://oneroofshare.com/

21M What’s it take to get a flat?

Hi everyone, I live in Auckland with my gf and my dog. I have been flatting with a friend this year but the company I started has done quite well and I am looking to earn into the 6 figures.

I’m now being asked to work full time and set a salary but I need a place to settle down. My GF is not a NZ resident but we are looking to apply for a partner visa.

I’m wondering what I would need to have a fighting chance and securing a 650wk home. I have 6 months of rent in savings and extra cash and a couple thousand extra for accommodating for my dog.

My father has stellar credit and is willing to co-sign.

How long to get bond refund?

We handed the keys of our rental back one month ago. No money is being taken out of the bond. We still haven’t had the bond refunded! Property manager is saying it’s because they’ve changed the system recently. We were in our rental for 5 years so haven’t had to go through the refund process for a while.

I’ve also received various, seemingly random, bits of communication from Tenancy. This included a reminder to fill something in that I was never asked to do in the first place, and a request for my partner to fill in a form that also hasn’t been sent.

Has anyone else been through the refund process recently? Is it the same for everyone or has the PM mucked up? We’ve never had to apply for a bond refund previously, it’s always been done by the PM/company we rented through.

NZ Tenancy Tribunal advice - Property mgmt charging us for landlords renovations

TDLR - they’re trying to essentially charge us a couple thousand over bond & withholding our bond. Seem like we are somehow responsible for the landlords renovations of the apartment so that they can rent it out at a more expensive weekly rate (was on Trademe for 3 months and they still haven’t tenanted the place)

My husband and I recently moved out of an apartment after a two-year tenancy. Our former property manager is withholding our bond and claiming several thousand dollars over the bond amount in damages.

We have paid out of pocket for professional cleaners (2x), professional rug cleaning (the state of apartment had human hair/pet dander/old clothes when we moved in), and a power wash of the outside due to excessive mould growing. We are respectful tenants however the apartment had very poor cheaply made fixtures that kept breaking throughout our tenancy and I would always raise this with the property manager.

They’ve now said they’ll take us to the Tenancy Tribunal.

My main concerns are -

Painting: We’re being charged for repairing and repainting multiple walls due to artwork and shelving. However, many screws/hooks were already there when we moved in (we have video evidence), and the original listing shows artwork throughout the property. Our own wall hangings were also visible during routine inspections throughout the 2 years without any concerns being raised until our lease ended and after they couldn’t rent the apartment for $50 more per week.

Wardrobe: We accidentally dented one wardrobe panel and acknowledged responsibility. They initially said 1 panel needed to be replaced but now we’re now being quoted for replacing the entire three-door system, including tracks.

Other damage: There are additional claims involving blinds breaking, a light fitting and a body corporate noise complaint from 2025 (which we’re happy to pay and again only just got notified of it). Some maintenance issues had previously been reported by us but weren’t addressed.

Bond: We’ve requested evidence, quotes/itemised costs and the return of any undisputed bond, but the property manager has now stopped discussing the matter and says they’ll apply to the Tribunal.

We’re happy to pay for damage we’re genuinely responsible for, but we’re concerned about being charged for pre-existing damage, general wear and tear, and replacing entire fixtures rather than repairing them.

Has anyone been through something similar?
Would you recommend applying to the Tenancy Tribunal ourselves or waiting for the landlord’s application? How does the Tribunal generally approach depreciation, painting costs and claims for full replacements?
We have move-in videos, original listing photos, routine inspection photos and email correspondence to support our position.

Any advice would be appreciated!

"female only" rental listings

Sigh, the state of renting in this country. So this is a private studio rental, not a room so it's covered under the tenancy act. They are implying they want a "single fit female" as the tenant and "no pets". Both of which are against the act. Report?

Trying to rent on ACC

I have a sensitive claim with ACC and get weekly compensation. It's not something I want to talk about with a prospective landlord, but when I mention I'm on ACC they ask what my injury is. I also feel I've been discriminated against for being unemployed, not to mention most listings do that up front.

Is my best bet to lie and say I work from home? Do places ask for proof of income these days? I heard it's illegal but seems to be happening anyway...

Any tips for improving my chances? Thanks.

Roommates boyfriend keeps coming over and staying the night when we don't know about it.

I'm 19F and this is my first flat with people I do not know. At the beginning of the year a rule I pushed for was to be informed with whos in the house, like send a text if someone is staying the night or coming over. The flat agreed and it was fine until one of them got a new boyfriend, she's stoped telling us so I could be upstairs or in the living room and this random guy keeps showing up. It's making me really uncomfortable and I have spoken to her and the landlord.

Am I just over reacting and it needs to be something I get used to? He doesn't talk to any of us (like say hi when he comes in) and takes over the common space and even goes upstairs which is a girls only area. With the rise of student attacks recently in my country (New Zealand) I've been a bit paranoid and want my house o be a safe space.

Looking for some advice as I'm not sure if it happens in other flats and I'm over reacting.

Thanks :)

Boarding houses worth it?

Hey guys,

I'm a working professional living at home with my parents and I think its time I moved out. I make about 900 a week and I don't want to flat, but if I want to rent a studio with car parking (I need it cause I cant rely on public transport due to shift work) it'd be too expensive like close to $600 per week. I've had a look at ensuite boarding rooms as well where you share a kitchen but have a room and bathroom to yourself, with bills included which seems a bit better. The quality seems to vary on those types of properties and I don't want to be paying $380 a week to stay at some hole in a wall, but I've also seen some properties that look good too.

I wanted to know if anyone has stayed in a boarding home long term and what it was like and has it been generally worth it?

If not where do you guys rent? I'm really just looking for a place of my own in Auckland and I don't want to compromise by flatting but maybe it'll be better than staying with the parents. I don't know. Any advise would be appreciated
