Chinatown funeral home, cyclists clash over bike lane

Chinatown funeral home, cyclists clash over bike lane

Good job Reddit. Ya'll made the news.

Thank you everyone who sent emails to our Councilperson, Mark Squilla! For those who advocate breaking things, grow up. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

TLDR: City is working with the funeral home to find alternatives. They have provided explicit instruction not to park in the bike lane or remove flexposts.

Non-Legal stop signs installed on the bike lane on 11th

Looks like our friends at Nan Phuong purchased some signs from Olanzu and put them up on the pole illegally.

These are not standard Stop signs that Philadelphia uses. These are not mounted correctly. And these are dangerous.

In lieu of removing them myself, who do we contact to have them removed as quickly as possible?

Slow and simple group rides?

Im disabled and I dont think I can commit to or keep up the pace of regular group rides. I was wondering if there are any slower rides for families, beginners, or people with disabilities? I love cycling and need something that takes a route thats easy-ish to bail from. Like a tight, small loop so if you dont feel good its easy to go back because you arent 5 miles away from the starting point. Or a ride that has a shuttle or is near a train or something at one end so you go further but theres a ride back?

I also really want to to try recumbent bikes for my condition so a slow recombant trail ride would rule too, and maybe i could find a bike to rent. Any recommendations? ideas?

Wednesday Night Rides // August 19 // Philly Cycling Classic Preview

The Philadelphia Cycling Classic is returning to Philly after a 10-year hiatus, and this week we're taking on part of the iconic 14.4-mile race circuit. The elite women's and men's fields will tackle Kelly Drive, the legendary Manayunk Wall, and Lemon Hill, and for our ride, we'll head up the Schuylkill River Trail and parallel portions of the course before rolling into Manayunk. We'll take on a block of the famous Manayunk Wall and regroup at Pretzel Park for a well-earned break. Then we'll cruise back toward East Falls and finish at Wissahickon Brewing Company. This is a great chance to experience a piece of the course before the pros do.

Ride Details

Ride notes

  • Take care when navigating Logan Square and Eakins Oval - watch for vehicles and follow traffic lights as we roll through onto the SRT.
  • After dark, PA law requires a headlight and a red tail light or reflector on all bikes.
  • We ride for fun - while encountering hostile drivers happens sometimes, our practice is to avoid conflict as much as possible. When there's potential for conflict, please de-escalate, e.g. pull over to the side to let cars pass

Hope to see you on Wednesday on a bike!

Concrete in bike lane on Delaware

At delaware and columbia. I called 311 to report it and when I said there’s a good chance it’ll kill someone they put me over to 911. Watch out

How would one get a messenger job these days?

I did Citywide 6 this weekend and while I was fighting for my life in the back half, I placed *Decently*, and had way more fun than riding a century. I'm also funderemployed (applying for jobs between uber eats) and thought to myself, maybe I could pull this shit off on the regular. Anyone know who's hiring? where to even start?

Anyone would like to ride from center city to Norristown and back via SRT on weekend afternoons?

Took the SRT up and back couple of times but gets a little boring sometimes, and I also checked out some of the group rides in Philly but I didn’t find one that does SRT for longer sections or fits my schedule well. Wondering if anyone ride the SRT up in the weekend afternoon (2-4p ish) and would like to ride together? We can even form a small group if there are a couple people!

I usually avg ~16.5mph on rides (including traffic stops etc) and go ~18mph on flat sections like Mlk drive. I’m also in my mid 20s. Feel free to dm me if interested!

Choi Funeral Home Saga Part 4

Hey all! Wanted to post an update on the Vine Street bike lane. I was out this morning recording the removal of the flex-posts on the Vine Street bike lane. While the flex-posts were removed temporarily to allow parking, they were not left scattered across the sidewalk like last week.

Unfortunately the situation was rather tense and I would rather not see things escalated further. I was shouted at by multiple employees and called a "loser" and a "homo" by one employee in particular. This was not helpful in resolving the matter. I particularly wanted to know if the City/PennDoT had reached out to the funeral home to discuss alternatives for parking. Its not clear if the City/PennDoT has given verbal or written permission to remove flex-posts and park in the bike lane. If they have given permission that's on them but without anything in writing, its hard to know.

The owner of the funeral home has justified this practice in a very broad interpretation of the funeral procession law (https://www.palegis.us/statutes/consolidated/view-statute?txtType=HTM&ttl=75&div=0&chpt=31&sctn=7&subsctn=0). This law governs funeral processions though and does not give funeral homes free reign of parking for visitation or services at a funeral home. It definitely does not allow for removing infrastructure.

I do encourage ya'll to take action so that this matter is solved sooner than later and cyclists can safely use the bike lane again. I'd rather not see infrastructure damaged again while alternatives are available. You can email the District 1 Councilperson at mark.squilla@phila.gov and cc anne.kelly@phila.gov

Sample text:

"Dear Councilman Squilla,

Thank you for helping restore the flex-posts on the Vine Street bike lane. Please work with Choi Funeral Home on 12th street to find alternatives to parking in the bike lane. The current arrangement is dangerous as it forces cyclists into high speed traffic and could result in someone being killed.

Regards,

[name]

[address if in District 1]"

Stay tuned for part 5.

Philly Classic Prep

Anyone know if there are plans to actually pave Ridge? I drove down the stretch that will be the fall from the wall today and its surface can be best described as lunar.

Choi Funeral Home Saga for the

The photos from today’s funeral service clearly show that every flex‑post was in place and nothing was moved, removed, or stolen. The lane remained exactly as it was before, during, and after the funeral. The only person who touched a post today was the cyclist who recorded the video. We have video confirming this, but we are respectful enough not to post it or embarrass him publicly.

We have also included a photo of our funeral home from 1998 and the original grand‑opening invitation from November 28, 1998. Our funeral home has operated on Vine Street for 28 years, and our long‑standing presence shows that we follow established funeral practices and respect the neighborhood. Today’s photos make it clear that our operations did not disturb or alter any City infrastructure.

Apologies to the FedEx delivery guy…

… who left his cart full of packages (mostly Chewy) blocking the bike lane near 21st and Spruce this morning while he was ringing doorbells. While I don’t agree with where you left the cart, I shouldn’t have knocked one of the packages off the top and yelled at you.

Help us shape the future of secure bike parking in Philly

Hi everyone! We're the team at Sportworks, and we've partnered with SEPTA to pilot a new secure bike parking system at Fox Chase Station.

The pilot is now live and free to use. It's enclosed, covered, secure, and accessed through an app, with the goal of making it easier (and less stressful) to bike to the SEPTA train.

If you're in the area, we'd love for you to give it a try and tell us what you think. We're especially interested in hearing from people who already bike to SEPTA, but we'd also love feedback from anyone who's considered it and decided against it.

A few things we're curious about:

  • Would secure bike parking change how often you take transit?
  • What would make you trust leaving your bike at a station all day?
  • If you've tried the Fox Chase location, what worked well? What should we improve?

We know trusting someone else with your bike is a big ask. That's exactly why we're looking for honest feedback from people who ride.

We're here to listen, answer questions, and use your feedback to make the experience better.

Cheers!

Best way from Fishtown to Kensington?

Hi everyone, I wanted to try biking from Fishtown area to Caphe Roasters tomorrow. I've haven't biked up north that much — is this the best way to get there? (N American -> Cumberland -> Kensington Ave) How safe is it? Also I'm guessing I should be really careful about locking up my bike right...

UPDATE: Took Emerald -> Ontario and it was great! Thanks everyone 🙏
