Silver Status, worth it?

Hi all! We are planning to fly SEA to LHR round trip this year, debating how to book. We have some points we can utilize at a decent redemption with KLM or Virgin Atlantic. However, the round trip would put us at silver status for Alaska if we book with cash, and the flight cost would be around $1100 per person so not terrible. Is it worth it for the silver status, or should we just utilize our points elsewhere?

Also worth mentioning we get 5x points with our credit card, so will get points on the cash booking with both Alaska and Cap One.

Mainly flying Delta....

So...I am going to be flying Delta domestic likely every month - from RDU to Moline. Delta has by far the best options. Looking at ways to start building points (this will be on my dime). I am usually a single travel, can get by w a carry on back, won't need car rental or a hotel. I used to have the Amex Gold a couple years ago and cancelled it (wish I hadn't now had I known my current situation). Looking at opening a new card for points purposes. Leaning towards Chase Sapphire. I understand Chase doesn't "partner" with Delta. But from what I can see from the research I have done here Chase Sapphire with the 100,000 points for 5K spent in 3 months (won't be a problem) and the 5X travel points seem to a good option. BUT given I wouldn't be able to transfer points to Delta directly, is the Chase Sapphire card still the best option?? I am likely overthinking this.....but this is all new to me. TIA!!!!!

What are the best tools for finding reward-flight availability?

Hi everyone, I’m new to the group and currently have a fairly large balance of Amex Membership Rewards points.

I’ve started looking at using them for flights, but I’m finding the process quite time-consuming. It seems like you have to check multiple airline websites individually for reward availability, and even when you find something, it can be difficult to know whether you’re actually getting good value compared with paying cash.

Could anyone recommend any useful tools or websites?

For those who have used paid reward-search platforms:

  • Are the subscriptions worth it?
  • How reliable and easy are they to use?
  • Are there any tools that compare reward options with cash fares in one place?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Jfk to sgn for 115k points

Found JFK to SGN for 115k points business class on flying blue. Sadly the promo to flying blue just ended and I am wondering if this is worth it or if people are regularly seeing anything lower elsewhere?

After redeeming over 1 million Hilton Honors points, I finally made a video showing why I’ll never cancel my Surpass card.

My wife and I have both carried the Hilton Surpass card for years, and between us we’ve redeemed well over a million Hilton Honors points and have close to that sitting waiting to be deployed again.

Looking back, I realized the points themselves aren’t really what I remember.

It’s the experiences they created for our family.

One of my favourite examples was last summer at Conrad Chia Laguna Sardinia.

We used:

  • 360,000 Hilton Honors points
  • Hilton’s 5th Night Free benefit
  • Two Free Night Certificates we’d earned through Surpass spending

That gave us a full 7-night stay at what was probably the nicest resort we’ve ever visited as a family.

The rooms were selling for around $850/night, we were upgraded to a King Oasi Garden Suite, breakfast was included every morning thanks to Hilton elite status, and one evening the hotel left little stuffed animals and handwritten notes for our kids. They still have them today.

That’s when it really hit me, this whole collecting Hilton points game I was playing was more to do with giving my family better experience on things we wouldn’t normally be spending.

I know there are plenty of people who can calculate redemption values down to the decimal place. I enjoy that side of the hobby too, but that’s not really why I stay loyal to Hilton.

For me now, the value is being able to take my family on trips I’d probably never justify paying cash for.

I actually just finished making a video walking through why the Surpass has stayed in my wallet for years, how we’ve used the points, and why I think the Free Night Certificates are the most underrated benefit on the card.

If anyone is interested, here’s the video link here

https://youtu.be/2PbhTX_V2BE?si=ntICJ16CxB_X0RX_

I’d also love to hear from other Hilton families and their experience using either Surpass or Aspire Card.

What’s been your favourite Hilton redemption or Free Night Certificate use?

Etihad A380 First Class Apartment Review

Recently had the chance to fly Etihad’s A380 First Class Apartment from Abu Dhabi to Toronto. Even at over 14 hours, the flight went by in the blink of an eye.

Found this award in First Class all the way from Nairobi to Toronto via Abu Dhabi for just 120k AAdvantage miles + ~$70 in taxes. Etihad has been releasing first class awards with decent consistency within 5-10 days of departure, provided that there are at least ~5 seats available for sale.

I first flew this product over a decade ago when it first launched, and I’m happy to report that it’s still just about as good as I it was! The single aisle layout on an A380 is iconic, with the amount of real estate only rivaled by Singapore’s new first class. The separate bed vs. lounge vs. vanity areas really made it easy to rest and stretch in any way I want. With that said, I do wish that they used thicker and more plush bedding, as the sleeping surface felt rather hard.

In terms of F&B, it’s definitely been scaled back a bit since a decade ago - gone are the inflight chefs or highly customizable dishes with a dozen different ingredients to mix and match with. However, the quality is still pretty top notch. The recent addition of caviar is a nice touch, I thoroughly enjoyed the cod as my entree so much so I decided to order it again for breakfast. The wine list was good but nothing spectacular, with the champagne being Veuve La Grande Dame.

Service was fine, but didn’t have a ton of warmth or personalization. There were several major misses: 1) the iconic inflight shower was out of service as the handle apparently fell off and prevented the door from locking (water can’t be activated without it); 2) half of my seat controllers weren’t working, which prevented the bench from reclining to convert into a bed, thankfully the flight was less than half full and the crew was able to set up my bed in the adjacent suite; 3) towards the end of the flight, the entire upper deck, including all of business class, ran out of ice…so no iced coffee, juices were served warm, no cold drinks at all. Seems like a very easily avoidable issue that should’ve never happened.

Still, very happy to have got to fly on this iconic product again. Would highly recommend it to anyone!

Tips for a newbie (travel rewards specifically)

I am new to using credit card points for travel and want to know the best way to break into this lifestyle. I currently have a capital one venture card which is pretty basic but it’s a start. What I am wondering is if it would be better if I pick a brand to be loyal to (such as Hyatt or American Airlines, which I use a lot) and get their specific credit cards. Or should I look into cards that give more miles for things I actually buy like groceries? (For example I hardly get the miles bonus on my current card for restaurants or gas because I rarely go out to eat and don’t drive a lot). I don’t know it just seems like there are a million options and it is overwhelming. Practical tips are welcome 😭 Thank you!!

Premium / Business Class Travel is Overrated and Underwhelming

While I appreciate the way points have allowed me to travel almost exclusively on business class nternationally over the last few years, I do feel like the novelty has worn off and while it is undoubtedly more comfortable, I sometimes miss the experience of economy, as it's always felt more exciting to see other people in the cabin and the diversity of experiences, excitement, fear, apathy, as well as various commotions. Additionally, having experienced some flights recently on a base level corporate jet for some short distance flights, any commercial product does feel immensely inferior in terms of flexibility, space, and true luxury which is measured in time and utility, not fake "premium" symbols. None of that can be purchased with points.

In 90% of cases, I do feel that economy with extra legroom provides comfort commensurate with business in a flight under 12 hours, provided it is non overnight. In no situation do I feel that paying (in cash) anywhere more than 1.5x economy is worth it for even a long haul business class product, and in terms of points, any redemption needs to have a CPP value of over 3cpm for me to make it feel worth it.

It does make me feel quite amused to see people care so much about optimizing points to try to sit in a "nicer" cabin for a few hours. Just like rats pushing levers set by the companies to "game" the syste and gain their reward of a slightly nicer seat for a few hours. It is just so tiring to see.

Hot take: ANA The Suite First Class is underwhelming

ANA first class The Suite receives an overwhelming amount of hype because:

  1. it’s flying to Tokyo, which is an extremely popular destination and,
  2. it’s one of the best award redemption sweet spots via Virgin Atlantic.

JAL’s A350 first class much nicer with a 1-1-1 configuration and better food/drinks than ANA. ANA still has a 1-2-1 configuration.

Emirates Gamechanger first class, also on the 777 is better.

Same with Air France La Premiere first class, Singapore Airlines A380 first class, and ETIHAD apartments.

Even Lufthansa Allegris and Swiss first class are at the same level or better.

All of the other airlines with the exception of JAL, have way better lounges and ground experience than ANA too.

Getting endless stash of points?

How are people getting points so quickly through credit cards? I understand the chase products and SUB offers, I recognize the amex , citi, capital one etc. I get the transfer process and stalking websites year in advance to book saver award flights. My question is how are people churning points so quickly? How are you collecting 200k + points every year for your family of 3-4 people? How are you qualifying for cc this quickly? And then at what point does chasing points becomes a moot point if you’re constantly spending 6-8k every 3-4 months to meet these bonuses? Clearly you can afford flights then lol
I know some people have businesses so its easy to meet this spend. What about regular folks with 9-5 jobs who are in this hobby? Are you just collecting points for years?

I am just stunned how these folks are posting on fb pages about booking vacations pretty much quarterly with points, including long haul flights like to Japan or Hawaii or S Korea. Am I missing a loophole that everyone else knows about?

Lufthansa First Class Partner Availability

Anyone had recent success booking Lufthansa first through Air Canada?

I keep a loose eye on first class availability - Boston is currently served by A380 and 747-8 so I’d love to snag a ride on either this summer but haven’t seen any seats open up on AC in the past week or so.

Curious if others are seeing the same. Miles and more has tons of first class availability over the Fourth of July but none of the seats are showing up to partners.

I’m looking for a flight in late May from Atlanta to Paris. I’m willing to reposition although I would love to fly out of Atlanta - especially because there are so many damn flights from ATL. I’ve set my alerts and nothing comes up. Do we just need to luck into getting a deal?

EVA releasing multiple seats to Aeroplan T-7

I noticed a cool new development this morning. It looks like EVA is now releasing multiple seats to Aeroplan for T-7.

Positively surprised and I even saw 8 seats available on the TPE-ORD route.
