first time pit pei mama—need tips!

While I’m not a first time dog mama, I’m definitely new at the Shar Pei breed. I’ve had my 6 mo old baby (Benito) for 4 months now. If anyone has any advice/musts they wanted to share, it would be greatly appreciated. He is so STUBBORN y’all, and so so perfect!❣️💋

Tertiary Hypothyroidism?

Has anyone’s Pei been diagnosed with this?

My girl has packed on a cool 15# in the last year or so with the exact same diet and snacks. I reduced her food and pretty sure she’s still gaining weight. She no longer wants to go on a walk and won’t take more than a few steps out the front door unless she sees a squirrel or deer to chase. She’s going to be 9 next month so I chalked it up to old age. Now she’s got a chunk of fur missing from her face and the skin underneath is dry/scaly. She also started getting ear infections in the last year when she never had any prior issues. Andddd she has some bald spots on her back legs plus the beautiful seborrhea bumps. Her cankles always look swollen or full but the vet always checks and says they’re fine. She gets her T4 checked during her senior lab work and it was 2.1 last year but Dr Google told me that falls normal or low.

I lovingly call her my lemon, so maybe she’s just fat (which would be 100% my fault) with all the other issues separate. I’m taking her to the dogtor Thursday but didn’t know if anyone had any tips or experience with it.

TLDR: my Pei is turning into a fatty patty and I’m concerned she has tertiary hypothyroidism.

Cough

Hello everyone,

I am new to this sub. But wanted to ask a question, i have a sharpei (7y), i don't think he is 100% sharpei tho, by seeing pictures of the breed. But on to the question, my dog has recently developed a cough, really nasty sounds, we went to the vet a few months ago because of another cough, he got medicine and all was fixed, but now the cough came back meaner. He is currently recieving medicine for his cough, and i pray it will go away soon. He had some instances of a clogged nose by a cold in the past but never a cough, let alone such a nasty one. My question is, is this normal for the breed? Because in all the time that we had him he never had a cough, we had a few colds but never a cough. Could anyone share their experiences? I am afraid that this is atypical because he always has the same things come back like his allergies and as i said, a cold, or an ear infection but this is new, i am afraid that it's not normal for him to have the same thing so shortly after each other.
For reference i am not the 'owner', my parents are, they chose the breed, but i would love to know because i forgot to ask the vet if it is a normal occurance in this dogbreed, or if it is because of enviromental reasons (which i dont think because he never had it before now) maybe i sound stupid and ignorant but i hope someone would share his/her/their experience if it is normal or not,

Thanks in advance

My sweet baby, Iris crossed the rainbow bridge

Today, my wife and I said goodbye to our loved Pei that we had the pleasure of having for 8 years. Her name was Iris, the most calm, diva, funny, goofy, sweet baby girl. We had her since pup, and this is our first ever dog. Iris sadly got blind once she turned 8, she lived as a blind dog but sadly she didn’t thrive as a blind dog.. we tried our best to give her the love and caring she needed, but apart from the blindness we suddenly found a tumor too. Our vets decision was to euthanise her and let her forever sleep.

I am beyond words of how thankful I am for her. She was my anchor and my best friend. She helped us being sane during Covid and the lockdowns, she was my therapist during exam periods, and man all the talks we had and experiences and places.. I don’t know how I’m gonna move on, or if I’m ever gonna move on. She was my first, and nothing can or will replace her.

I’m so happy we had her in our lives, and I hope she was happy for us too. Sleep tight sweet girl mom and dad love you. I see you on the other side someday.

My 6 month old Pit Pei baby doesn’t wanna eat!

Hey all! I have a 6 month old Pit Pei, and he’s been really picky lately. I know they’re notoriously stubborn, but it’s continuously gotten worse. So much so, that it’s really hard for me to keep him on any kind of eating schedule because I just want him to eat! Store bought/homeade toppers on dry food were helping, and he will get homemade dog food often, but now he just seems over it again. I know he probably won’t let himself starve, but does anyone have any suggestions/something that worked for them? Do I just have a picky baby? Haha

Obviously inspired by the JOWLS shirt someone posted a week or so ago

My petless dad loves with my blue Shar Pei, fondly calls him his grand-pup, parades him all over out in public, etc. so I had a custom shirt made with my dog on it, for Father’s Day. Turned out amazingly, and June 21 cannot arrive soon enough!

Entropion +6 months

I tried posting before and it didn't go through I guess, so I'll try again.

My boy had entropion surgery about 6 months ago. I was really happy with the surgery and healing, they looked great. Then spring happened and allergies started. He's now on daily allergy medicine but the area around his eyes appears to have lost some of the hair or developed scar tissue or something. I'm not really sure.

I've scheduled a vet appointment but wanted to see if anyone else experienced this or had any advice.

Ruby Went Over The Rainbow Bridge 1 Week Ago

She was a rescue from Pei People Shar Pei Rescue. She loved when the garbage man came. She loved goat yogurt and donut holes. She was a good girl.
