Morning Muggy Ride

It’s been the same temp here in MI the past few days as TX. Rode this morning and the air was crazy thick after an overnight rain. Heck of a workout on the SS!

My first single speed build - gift gift for my brother

Had a great time building this! I’m lucky to have access to have access to a lot of old frames and hard parts for really cheap. My brother had been asking me to build him a fixie, but he hasn’t ridden a bike in years, so he’s getting a single speed instead 😂. I knew this was the perfect bike when I saw it come in, all together it cost about 130$ to build. Makes me want to build myself a single speed!

Affinity Metropolitan, my main mode of transportation

I bought this bike from the original owner almost two years ago, and I’ve ridden it nearly every day since. 42 x 16 ratio because I live in a valley, 700 x 30 road tubeless because I pretend to be fast.

A Betrayal

I couldn't help myself from giving it a go. The knees aren't getting younger and the hills certainly aren't going anywhere. Chain line ended up being pretty decent, too. The party pace is real! Time to find r/twospeed.

Bikepacking Singlespeed?

I am playing with the idea of starting my multi-year bikepacking tour with a White Ind. freewheel. It will be mounted on a custom made wheelset, Kom Tough rims, DT Swiss 240 hubs, DT Spokes. Frame will be a Surly Krampus. Is this a monumentally stupid idea or should I actually go for it? Let me know your thoughts! Also not my bike, my frame is in the mail.

Bare metal steel frame

I've been slowly building this SE Draft Lite bike. Took everything apart and stripped the paint. Hit the frame and fork with a wire wheel.I was gonna paint the bike forest green but now I'm loving the bare metal look.

Wanted to know if I go with the polished steel look can I just apply clear coat over it? Will it still be protected from rust even without primer and paint?

Any suggestions and recommendations is appreciated. Ok....GO 👀

Single Speed State

Hello everyone,

I recently joined the group and have been lurking around. I thought was time to drop an introduction!

Here is my State Bicycle Co. 4130. My first non-Walmart bike at age 29, and wow... what a difference! I found it on marketplace basically new. I had to fix a couple of assembly issues, but now it's perfect. I am loving the simplicity and the smoothness of the single speed. I've been using it for commuting to work and for rides on our local nature trails, going from not biking at all to putting 196 miles on it in the month of June. I am quickly beginning to upgrade parts as well! This is going to be a fun adventure with you all!

Is my rear drop out too damaged?

I’ve been having chain drop issues, suspected axle movement, and when reinstalling the wheel I noticed the nut seems to be gouging the inner dropout face rather than seating flat.

Is this too damaged to still ride?

Edit: For more context this is the 6ku Urban Track. I purchased it new in 2019 knowing I was getting myself into a cheap bike but had a small budget at the time and wanted to see if I liked a more road style bike after only riding mountain and bmx bikes prior.

I’m not concerned about the paint as some mentioned. My concern is the deformation in the aluminum caused by the inner axle nut. I don’t believe there’s any washers missing. I have it setup how the bike came.

Essentially trying to determine if I should start shopping around for a new or used and better quality bike.

Ever had a bike that's cursed?

I purchased a Motobecane Fantom Cross Uno (single speed gravel bike) less than a year ago. I swear the thing is cursed.

Started off when it came. The rear hub was bad. The company replaced it, but that took time.

I must admit it sat for a while as I rode other bikes. However, I decided I wanted/needed to start commuting on it again. Took it out for a shakedown ride this past weekend...and thought I wasn't going to stop going down a rather steep hill. So, I pulled the brake pads (it has mechanical disc brakes) and sanded them to deglaze them. I then rode it around my neighborhood and bedded the pads in.

This morning I pulled it out to ride to work. Got about a mile from home, and the rear wheel locked up. Granted, I probably overtightened the rear axle bolts or something related to the brake pad job, but still...

I ended up walking/dragging the bike back home and disappointedly drove to work to avoid being late.

This bike doesn't have 100 miles on it. Is it cursed? Should I carry on and repair (and hope for the best) or cut my losses? Honestly, I really enjoy riding it when it's working...the problem is when it's not working.

What are your thoughts? Ever had a cursed bike? Do I need to perform an exorcism on it?

Chain wear

How important is chain wear for singlespeed setups?
I find it hard to believe that my 46/18 setup with a bushed chain is apparently already cooked after 2500km. I’m aware that matters less than on a cassette but still…

(I cleaned and lubed it, but to be fair I’m also 90+ kg)

I’m curious, how long your setups last before replacing?
