li-nk : an "activity based" social platform built right here in the Salish region

Hi r/skagit ,

I am your neighbor here in the Salish Sea region and I've been thinking about this problem for a long time. In our communities you can live for years, care deeply about something. A craft, a cause, a niche corner of music or science or making things. But still not know who else around you cares about it too. The people are here. You just don't cross paths. The shared interest stays invisible.

It's a pattern that shows up all around the Salish Sea: in the islands, in the small towns along the water, in the communities tucked into the folds of this region. Smaller places make it especially visible, but the underlying problem isn't really about size. It's that the tools we use to connect online are built around who you already know or around broadcasting to strangers. Neither one does much for the quieter work of finding the handful of people nearby who share the interests that you care about.

That's what I've spent the last several years building li-nk to address. It's organized around interests and community rather than follower counts or feeds. The idea is simple: develop your interests, find your community. Built with an experience living in the Salish communities in mind, designed to work anywhere the same problem shows up.

I care about this region and the communities in it, and I'd really value feedback from folks around here as I launch. I'd be elated if you were to check out the li-nk platform.

Subaru diagnostic suggestion

Hello skagit people! I have a 2017 Subaru Impreza which needs diagnostics ran. My center console screen started glitching out a few months back, and I’m looking for someone local who can help me figure out what’s wrong. The screen works when I put the vehicle in reverse, but is static any other time (turns off and on randomly and cannot be turned off at all).

I called Subaru and they charge over $230 just for diagnostics :(

Any recommendations on a local shop who has some better pricing ? Thank you in advance for suggestions

ISO: best cookies & coffee near I5

Where can I find the best cookies (and hopefully coffee too)? Anywhere between Sedro and Smokey Point would be ideal as long as it's not far off I5.

Thanks in advance!

Has anyone ever had issues with court or public defenders office?

Im writing this because a friend of mine has been mistreated, misrepesented, violations of their rights, constitutional and amendment rights. There has been year and half delays, or push plea bargains. public defenders office and the judge violating, rights being one sided or the defender doesn't defend them. We have contacted the bar association, but been issues too not sure if they will do any good or not. hiring a regular attorney they wont take the case cause gone on a to long. THERE WAS NO CRIME COMMITED WAS ALL LIES.

Who has the best tres leches cake?

What place in Mt Vernon, Burlington or Sedro-Woolley has the best tres leches cakes & why do you like them best? I’ll be getting one for a party in June, so just curious what else is out there besides the quick & simple Safeway option. 🎂

Clown cart alert

Saw these BC clowns speeding dangerously through Sedro-Woolley continue out east on Hwy 20, all while throwing trash out the window continuously.

State troopers were very receptive in the report I made. Kudos to them for taking this seriously.

Speeding through our towns while littering? You bet your butt that I’m going to post here and shame you. Hope the troopers flagged you down and slap you with a big fat fine.

Drainage Painage

Anybody got a line on a decent landscaper or contractor that has experience with adding drainage systems to a residential property? Hopefully without completely destroying my savings?

I-5 reduces to one lane in each direction near Alger for 12 days (May 10-May 22)

If you travel between Burlington and Bellingham on I-5, plan ahead for the next week and a half. Both directions of I-5 near Lake Samish Rd have been reduced to a single lane for 12 days until Friday, May 22, while crews install a new fish-passable structure beneath the northbound lanes.

To create enough room for crews to excavate beneath northbound I-5, northbound traffic will temporarily shift onto the southbound side of the freeway using a crossover road. Northbound and southbound traffic will be separated by concrete barriers.

Let's get into the details of what to expect during these lane reductions:

Through 2 p.m. Friday, May 22

  • Northbound and southbound I-5 each will be reduced to one lane near Lake Samish Road (exit 240)
  • Northbound traffic will temporarily shift onto the southbound side of the freeway through the work zone
  • Speed limits will be reduced to 60 mph in the area

Important note: The Lake Samish/Alger on-ramp to northbound I-5 closed May 3 and will remain closed for 28 days. A signed detour routes drivers to the Nulle Rd on-ramp at exit 242.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR DRIVERS:

Traffic will be funneled into a single lane in each direction through a long-term work zone, which means backups and slower travel times are likely throughout the corridor, especially during peak travel periods and weekends. Drivers should expect congestion to build quickly approaching the crossover area, with delays potentially extending well beyond the immediate work zone during busier times of day.

Travel between Burlington and Bellingham will likely be slower and less predictable throughout the closure. Commercial trucks may want to consider using SR 9, while passenger vehicles can use SR 9 or SR 11/Chuckanut Drive as alternate routes.

If possible, travel earlier or later, consider alternate routes and check real-time traffic conditions before heading out.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR DRIVERS:

This project will remove 12 fish barriers along tributaries to Friday Creek and reconnect approximately 4.2 miles of habitat for coho, steelhead, resident trout and sea-run cutthroat.

The work is part of WSDOT’s statewide fish passage program and ongoing efforts to comply with a federal court injunction requiring the state to correct culverts that block salmon and steelhead migration in western Washington.

Once this northbound work is complete, major daytime and long-term lane reductions will pause during the regional World Cup match period (June 12–July 8) before construction resumes later this summer on the southbound side of I-5.

$600K in Skagit County gets you nearly 2,000 square feet and vaulted ceilings on a quiet street. In Seattle? A shoebox with graffiti in one bedroom. Which are you choosing?

The Future of BEHS - Open Letter to Burlington Edison School District [As Found Posted on NextDoor, Not My Content, Reposting]

Heya,

Found this posted on NextDoor today and thought I would share here for visibility. I blacked out the authors name to comply with reddit rules, and am mostly just reposting the pictures they posted.

Also below is the text of their two next door posts for reference:

>Burlington Edison School District Families: important note from tonight's meeting with superintendent Pearson - the school district is coming right out of the gate talking about killing block scheduling at the high school. The very thing we approved the recent levy to maintain.

>This blatant bait and switch idea shows a lack of creativity and leadership. When money gets tight due to dropping enrollment their first instinct is to make the easiest *operational* decision, rather than the best decision.

>They will be posting the presentation on their website shortly. Be sure to read through their PowerPoint and sound off on their survey. And contact your school board member and make sure they know that we can replace them and see the leadership changed too if they continue down this misguided path.

...

>Hello Fellow District Families - included in this post is the recent letter I have sent to the Burlington Edison School Board and Administration - I am sharing here not just for visibility, but also for references as a starting point for others to do their own reading and research and form their own thoughts and feedback.

>I implore everyone who is a citizen in the BESD district to also provide their own feedback. The district has said they will post a copy of the presentation they made online, but I have yet to see this posted as was promised, so I am sharing both my letter, and the link to the "official" feedback form given during the presentation via the included QR code as well.
