Question for 90’s fans

What was following Sonic Youth like in the late 90’s?

I’m a newer fan, and I’m wondering what was like to be a fan in the late 90’s, where it would’ve been after their commercial peak with Goo, Lollapalooza, etc., and before Jim O’Rourke joined.

From what I can tell, Sonic Youth never reached a level of popularity where they could be considered mainstream, and there would’ve been so many bands that came and went during Sonic Youth’s era.

What do you guys think of Sonic Youth covering Superstar ? I do not like it.
I wish they would put noisy noisy guitar in the song !
My favourite is Bettie Serveert - For All We Know.

New Youth fan..Live Recs?

Hey y’all! I’m making my way through Sonic Youths Discography. I’ve made my way through their first EP to the Master-Dik EP and needless to say they are amazing.

I love the no-wave krautrock riffs that make me feel like I’m in a trance. And Kim Gordon just speaks to me in a way that I can’t explain.

I’m aware that Daydream Nation is an iconic record and I’m excited to get into it next and seeing them evolve more.

Anyhow does anyone have any recommendations for deep cuts or live performances from this period that I might not come across on Apple Music or by reading on Wikipedia?

Chan Marshall, of Cat Power, & Loren Connors - Live @ Tonic, NY (1999)

For a while all you could find were two recordings of tracks from this set uploaded separately. You can still find Troubled Waters, but the Leopard and the Lamb recording disappeared. Here you can you enjoy their entire performance together. The video description breaks everything down nicely, so give that a read if you wanna see the full set-list and learn about the context of the show. It’ll definitely be of interest to some noise/indie music nerds out there.

TOMT crosspost: did Sonic Youth ever cover “I’m Not in Love” by 10cc?

It’s driving me crazy but I swear about 15 to 20 years ago I heard a cover of this song that sounded a lot like Sonic Youth. Probably mostly like Murray Street era.

No, I’m not confusing it with Superstar.

https://www.reddit.com/r/tipofmytongue/s/sdriCNKUPY

Does anyone know of a band this might be or if there was some bootleg where Sonic Youth did a cover of this?

Edit: the comment about Murray Street is not the timing of the release, but the sound, but this would’ve been released sometime before 2009 which is the approximate year I remember hearing it.

Additional notes that from what I remember, this was all guitars and no keyboard because I remember showing the song to someone and thinking it was a cool original song and then they pointed out that it was a cover and I was like oh yeah I forgot about that song. Then some time shortly after I heard the original on That 70s Show.

SY "Incinerate" / Dino Jr. "Freak Scene"

For starters, I'm a moderate fan of both bands.

Been trying to get more into Dino Jr lately and listened to "Freak Scene" for the first time. It instantly made me think of "Incinerate".

I know, of course, they're related through musical history, but I couldn't help but think that "Incinerate" borrowed several song-writing pieces directly.

  1. The drums sound almost identical both throughout the song and in the parts where the drummers alternate between toms and the standard rhythm.

  2. In transition points they both emphasize a double heavy strum on the guitar.

There are probably more details but this is what's off the top of my head. It's probably just coincidence but not many songs strike me as directly similar in core musical ways so I thought I'd ask if anyone else has noticed. Would love to hear vocals and music swapped on both!

Favorite Rarity?

Kinda a loose definition of "rarity"; it can be a lesser known single, B side, alternate album track, really whatever I'm not the release police here.

I like this single version of Master Dik a lot, and Genetic is probably my favorite Lee Ranaldo Sonic Youth song ever! What about y'all?

Looking for “A Thousand Leaves” related content?

I’ve been super into this album lately. They have one live album from this era on Bandcamp, but beyond that does anyone know of any other live stuff or maybe demos or something?

Gifted Sonic Youth Tee

My ex step-father went to some good shows growing up. My younger brother got most of his stash but this one was too big for him so it’s now in my hands. Digging it!

Good books or docs on the band

I’ve read the sections on the band in our band could be your life and corporate rock sucks: rise and fall of SST. Was wondering if there were any other books that aren’t Kim and Thurston’s biographies? Thanks
