Golden Smog interview- supergroup w/ Wilco, Jayhawks, Soul Asylum members

"The year was 1998 and the six then-current members of the Americana super group side-project, Golden Smog (which included members of Wilco, Soul Asylum, the Jayhawks, Big Star & more) were currently touring in support of their second full—length record Weird Tales. In a round-robin questionnaire, they talked about favorite concerts, their music tastes, their post-millennium aspirations and the song 'Until You Came Along' in this previously unpublished interview."

Bob Bert interview- about his time in SY & recent solo album

"Drumming for two of the most (in)famous noise rock bands of the '80s (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore) would alone cement Bob Bert's reputation. Restless soul that he also co-founded the much-loved and much missed BB Gun zine in the 1990s, doing numerous articles and interviews there. In 2019, he put out his book I'm Just the Drummer, detailing his exploits with his many bands. This year sees the release of his first solo album."

Dolly Parton- we will always love you (tribute)

Dolly Parton at SXSW, March 2022 (pics by me).

My girlfriend and I couldn't believe how lucky we were to see her-we were bowled over by her voice, stage presence, humor and heart. Interview question: "how do you keep looking so great?" Dolly: "Good lighting, good doctors and good make-up." Fan: "I love you, Dolly!" Dolly: "I love you too but I told you to go wait in the truck!" Sad to say, we didn't realize then that this would be one of her last concerts.

Thanks for being you, DP. We will always love you.

The Royal Scam- review/look-back article

I did an article for Rock & Roll Globe looking back at THE ROYAL SCAM on its 50th anniversary. Since the songs are cinematic and resemble fictional stories, I tied in specific books and films to each song, plus some later rap songs that mirror the songs' stories. I also interviewed two Steely Dan cover bands about the album- one shared his stories of actually meeting Fagen and Becker too. Hope you enjoy this.

Tar movie question

I know the movie Tar (2022, staring Cate Blanchett) has been discussed here before but I was curious about one scene in particular. Near the beginning, Tar is having lunch (I think it's the scene with the Kaplan character) when her friend suggests that a famous composer actually stole quite a bit of a composition from someone else.

What I'm wondering is, 1) who was the composer and the composition mentioned there? and 2) is this claim true?

Thanks in advance.

Ray Davies interview from 1998 (previously unpublished) & exclusive photos

This is a previously unpublished 3-part interview with Ray from 1998, including his thoughts on band's 1970's catalog, his relationship with Dave then and his thoughts at the time on a reunion. There's also several previously unseen photos of Ray taken at NYC shows around 2011 by Dave Kaufman. Hope you enjoy this!

Morton Feldman- a tribute to his tribute to Philip Guston (article)

"Described as simply as possible, 'For Philip Guston' is a very long work composed of minimal material scored for a trio. Like much else that Feldman was composing at the time, it has an almost empty feeling to it, despite its enormous length. Musical events, whether these consist of individual or overlapped tones, sound and fade into a surrounding field of silence that often seems to overtake them."

Bruce in Brooklyn last night- photos & some thoughts

Great show last night. Here's some pics from it. I had nose bleed seats off from the side of the stage but got some good pictures off the screen monitors and a few directly from the stage. A few thoughts:

- So much guitar talent up there- not just Bruce but also Nils, Steve and Tom, each taking impressive solos.

- When I saw him at MSG do "American Skin" in 2000, there was a lot of boo's from the crowd (and no, they weren't saying "Broooce"). This time when he sang it, everyone cheered.

- Great signs up front, including NO KINGS and one that said "I'll trade my mom for a harmonica" (she didn't get it so I guess she kept her mom), plus someone waving an American flag, esp. when he made the political speeches

- Speaking of politics, his speeches about that were really rousing and got some big cheers, including from me.

- When I looked at my stage photos, I saw monitors in front with writing on them and I usually assume that they have the lyrics for him to see but when I looked close up at them later, it actually had the chord changes for the songs instead. Thought that was interesting.

- As someone else noted here, the encores are now tacked on to the end of the show where they take a short break after "Land of Hope and Dreams" where the band takes a bow together and then they launch into "American Land" without leaving the stage. Nothing to complain about- you still get 3 hours of entertainment, which is twice as much as most arena acts.

- I happen to like his new stage outfit. He looks like the world's coolest banker or a character from a Guy Ritchie movie.

- Dunno about other tour stops but for this one, he was repping for New York Immigration Coalition. When you left the arena, they were handing out papers with QR codes to donate to them. You can find them at https://www.nyic.org/
