Anduril announces a $3.7 billion new shipyard at Sparrows Point, Maryland. The high-tech facility, called Arsenal-2, will manufacture large components and assemblies for Virginia-class nuclear submarines
• Location: Tradepoint Atlantic, Sparrows Point, Baltimore County, Maryland.
• Anduril private investment: $3.7 billion.
• The U.S. Navy has separately awarded Anduril a contract worth up to $2.9 billion, bringing the combined announced commitment to as much as $6.6 billion.
• Arsenal-2 will cover approximately 187 acres and include more than 2 million sq. ft. of manufacturing space.
• Infrastructure is planned to include advanced fabrication and assembly facilities and a 1,200-foot graving dock.
• The facility will manufacture complex components and large-scale assemblies for Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines.
• Initial production is expected to focus on critical components including torpedo tubes, currently identified as a production bottleneck. Anduril plans eventually to move into larger submarine modules and hull sections.
• Arsenal-2 will use Anduril’s ArsenalOS software platform to integrate fabrication, material movement, inspections, documentation and production workflows.
• Initial operations are targeted for 2030, followed by progressive expansion of production capacity.
• More than 3,100 direct permanent jobs are expected, with the project supporting more than 14,000 jobs overall in Maryland.
• General Dynamics Electric Boat and HII Newport News Shipbuilding remain the prime builders of Virginia-class submarines. Arsenal-2 is intended to expand the supporting industrial base rather than replace the existing submarine shipyards
