Bass Forage and swimbait size

So I've been fishing what I would consider big swimbaits for about 2+ years and haven't had much luck on anything over 8" in size. This has me thinking about the forage in my lake. The bass in my lake mostly eat threadfin shad, there are some gizzard shad but not a huge population. There are some bluegill too and crappie, but I haven't had much luck on lures that imitate either of those two fish. The other side of it is that the bass in my lake don't grow to giant size. I rarely hear of anybody catching one over 5. Should I stick to the 6" baits and smaller or commit to throwing out some big baits?

Also just as a side note, my lake has very little cover near the bank. Its almost all rock and dirt. What little cover there is can be found at the back of coves and that hasn't produced many fish for me. Thanks for the help!

Why 150 -200 size reels?

What reel you slapping on this rod? These suggestions seem to small no? I have a tatula 300 on it but its not comfortable and the reel slips in the reel seat. A curado 200 fits perfectly but makes the rod very tip heavy.Would a Calcutta 200 or 300 be a better fit? Mostly throw 3-5 oz glides and tyrant 8.

Engulfed

Bonus monster crappie i didnt get a good picture of. Have not been able to reach 5 pounds this year. Times running thin for that greater chance for me.

Braid to Flouro??

Ok, so I’m way too invested in way too many hobbies but I just scooped up another Tranx 400 for a heavier set up. Like 4-12oz. Plan on throwing Deps 250’s, bigger glides etc.. but I also plan on bringing it out on some day boats to get some yellows and other salt water fishing. My question is does anyone Swimbait or glide bait fish a braid to flouro leader? I’m so used to straight flouro but I need the versatility with this reel..

Anyone else addicted to topwater strikes?

Honestly nothing beats the excitement of a fish exploding on a topwater lure.

Recently started targeting snakehead in Kerala canals using frogs and small topwater lures, and the strikes are insanely aggressive compared to a lot of other fishing I’ve done.

Curious what everyone’s favorite topwater species is?

Hand poured swim baits

Been experimenting with some more natural patterns lately. Pretty happy with how these koi and rainbow trout swimbaits turned out

Selfmade fishing lure!

Hey guys I have been working on these 13cm, and 17cm handmade lures for a while now and I really wanted to get some honest feedback from you all. Do you guys actually like the design and colors or is there anything specific you would change to make them more effective/attractive in the water because I want to make sure they are perfect so please let me know what you think and I appreciate any tips or suggestions you have thanks for the help.

First Set Up Question

Been on the hunt for a first Swimbait set up, and saw this on marketplace. Price is good, but wondering if it might be “too much rod”. Leviathan set up makes it seem like it’ll be a lot better at the high end if the rating and maybe struggle with stuff in the sub 2oz range

Not sure yet exactly what kinds of baits I’ll want to throw, so want to maximize versatility. Wondering if anyone has experience with this rod?

Point me in the right direction.

Hi all. I am pretty new to the world of swimbaits, and am hoping to get some advice.

What I am looking for: a soft-bodied swimbait that I can bump along the bottom but that will still have good tail movement at such low speeds. My rod rating maxes out at 2oz, but I’m comfortable going over *a little*.

What I have tried that don’t do what I need: 5” MagDraft, 6” Cullshad (rigged), 6” Final Copy, and a 6” Castaic boot-tail that I’ve had forever. All of these either ride too high in the water or don’t have enough action on low-speed, bottom-bumping retrieves.

Any recommendations?

8" huddleston vs 8" Bacca Chimichanga

I'm trying to get more confident with throwing bigger and bigger baits. Right now it seems like 8" is the cutoff for me. I've got both a huddletson and a chimichanga (the big version of the burrito) and haven't caught fish on either one. But if you were to spend a day on the lake and had to pick one which would you choose? The lake I fish is currently right around 71° and is mostly rock. Very little cover, especially off of main lake points.
