Paranormal activity : spoilers

Just saw the show last night. I absolutely loved the first act. But did anyone else feel like the second act was a bit off? The pacing, the story went 180. The main lead male being the butt of all jokes was a little weird to? Once I laughed , twice I was like okay , third I was …hmm I can’t take him seriously at all. Then the last 5 minutes. Felt really rushed and I don’t know if I liked making the two leads …horrible people. I felt it wasn’t necessary? Could have just had it where the paranormal activities were just random not a targeted attack. Everything still could have been the same you didn’t really need it? Because looking back if I were to see it again I would be rooting for the ghosts?

Must see Toronto Fringe

Hey folks, with the volume of fringe shows I’m finding it hard to suss out the most impactful shows that are not to be missed.

So far I have seen

Olivia O
A Moment for Frayed Nerves
Meat Market

Today I am seeing
Grey Spaces
Pookamhura
First Kiss

I have tickets for:
CAMP
Sinner

So far my top show is Olivia O. It has so much potential if they had better sound engineering and less distracting scene transitions. I tend to prioritize musicals but am open to plays.

What’s the buzz? I look forward to finding some real gems so I can fit them in.

Theatre Clubs in Toronto?

I’m curious about any theatre meet ups or groups… like a book club but for theatre?

I personally see a lot of local theatre and take my friends out on play dates. But, these are people who are into theatre causally … I’m interested in connecting with folks who are a bit more intentional about seeing theatre like I am! Who are down to see multiple shows, and maybe even discuss themes across plays staged in Toronto.

Does anything like that exist?

Curious to know why people spend $ on theatre -- what makes it worth it?

Hi, folks!

Full disclaimer: I'm a Calgary based journalist, and I'm working on a story about how Canadians spend money on live entertainment -- especially theatre, concerts, that kind of thing.

I'm curious to include some personal/actual human stories about spending motivation, to go along with the big stats about trends in the last 5 years. So if you're up for it, I want to know:

- in the last 2 years, have you gone to a ticketed live show or event? If so, what was it, and about how much did you spend on tickets?

- if so, why did you go?

- how did you decide that it was worth the ticket price?

I won't attribute anything to you by username (unless you'd like me to), and if you're up for it, I welcome DMs where we can exchange contact info and I can potentially reach out and ask you a bit more about your story.

Thanks for your input, eh!

The outsiders last night (July 2nd) Ponyboy?

Ponyboy last night was phenomenal but I can’t seem to figure out who played him! It wasn’t the principal and from where I was sitting it didn’t look like the alternate either. Did anyone catch the board with the names for who played him last night?

FRINGE — first dispatch

How’s your Fringe marathon going? I could already use some sleep. Here’s a first round of reviews and recommendations in case anyone is still building their schedule.

RECOMMENDED

1. LADIES’ DAY
My current top recommendation. A delightful and sensitive look at women in the 1960s discovering, through solidarity, a sense of self beyond the narrow scripts they’ve been handed. It has charm, heart, and even bite. Review coming soon on NEXT. (Gosh, I’m behind on writing it; Ryan, don’t read this!!)

2. AFENI
A sharp piece of lecture-theatre centred on a Black Panther activist. It is politically anchored and passionately acted.
https://nextmag.ca/fringe-review-afeni-is-a-fierce-lesson-in-revolutionary-faith/

3. HE-R’TZ
A compelling dance piece about the fragmentation of migrant identity.
https://ourtheatrevoice.com/toronto-fringe-2026-dispatch-1-first-encounters-and-early-picks/

OTHER SHOWS I’VE SEEN

1920s Walking Around in a Dream
A sweet, (amateurish) old-fashioned show with real affection for 1920s performance traditions.
https://ourtheatrevoice.com/toronto-fringe-2026-dispatch-1-first-encounters-and-early-picks/

Finding Jamie
A queer coming-of-age solo show about childhood self-discovery and heteronormative expectations. It has some genuinely interesting ideas, though I found it a little thin overall. Review coming soon on NEXT.

Minimum
A political satire that turns Ontario politics into a circus of egos, though I wasn’t fully convinced it knew exactly where to aim its fire.
https://nextmag.ca/fringe-review-minimum-turns-ontario-politics-into-a-circus-of-egos/

Three Descending Notes
A gentle musical about dementia, with intriguing images, though for me it struggled to hold together dramatically.

Toronto Fringe - State of Balance

I decided to take a chance on a show I knew absolutely nothing about because it was in the west end (The Junction) and getting across the city has been a nightmare - the FOH staff actually told me that the venue was the furthest west Toronto Fringe has ever been.

Man… what a show. State of Balance is an immersive experience that is set at a community open house for a gym. What starts as an introduction workout turns into an authentic story of regret, facing your weaknesses and redemption. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re on the west side of the city.

5/5

Giving Away 2 Tickets to Tonight's '& Juliet' Musical

Tickets has been claimed

Thanks everyone for the kind comments and well wishes for our dog. Take care and stay safe!

Hi everyone,

We're giving away 2 tickets to tonight’s & Juliet show. Apologies for the short notice

Location: Royal Alexandra Theatre

Time: 7:30pm

Unfortunately, my dog had a rough night with the fireworks, so we’ve decided to stay home in case there are more this evening.

The seats are Row B, seats 29 and 30 in the Orchestra section—amazing seats.

We don’t want them to go to waste, so if anyone could use a fun night out—or if you’ve been having a rough day, enjoy a great night on us.

DM me privately and I can forward you the tickets.

I’ll update this post once they’ve been claimed.

Bi weekly play reading group in downtown Toronto!

Bi-weekly play reading group in Downtown Toronto !

*

Hey Folks. I've moved back to Toronto after escaping the demonic seagulls and slowness of Vancouver and hoping to build up a sense of community with folks who have a love of theatre and plays. I used to do a play reading group in Vancouver and made some wonderful friends there and got to experience a sense of play that I think can be hard to come by as an adult.

Am looking for a small group of people (2 to 3 other people) in their 30's or 40's who are open to a bi-weekly play reading group near Bloor / Yonge. I'm happy to host at my place once we all get a sense of each other and feel comfortable doing so and turning it into a potluck/play reading thing. But for now, am thinking of meeting outside in a park (when things cool down)

Am looking for folks who can meet at 5:30pm on a Monday or Wednesday.

Feel free to send me a PM or leave a comment below. Would love to hear a bit about yourself.

Thanks !

Outsiders discounts??

Hi!! I'm going to the outsiders for the evening show on july 8th, and have been asking my brother for months if he wanted to see this show with me and my dad, he has declined multiple times. Now my cousin (who is his age) really wants to go and so does he. Unfortunately for the performance I'm going to the only $39 tickets left are the very last row of the balcony. I have had my tickets sicne they dropped and dont want to exchange them as I have really good seats. I also really don't want to spend a ton since they are 15 y/o boys who have only seen bttf before lol. Does anyone know of any discounts that would bring tickets to $50 - $60??

Toronto Fringe 2026 Preview: Four Theatre Critics Share Their Picks, Tips, and Thoughts on the AI Poster Debate

Phil here, host of Stageworthy, Canada's theatre podcast. On Monday, June 22, I hosted a Toronto Fringe live stream, with four people whose takes on Toronto theatre I trust enormously: Janine Marley (A View from the Box), Ryan Borochovitz (Cup of Hemlock / The Cup Podcast), Alexandra Lean (Being Dramatic / Bad Reviewer), and Ryan McCollom (Plates and Playbills). I've turned that conversation into this week's episode and wanted to share it here because it covers a lot of ground that I think this community would enjoy.

We each shared our top five must-see picks and wildcard shows; highlights include Songs for Moby Dick, Such Ado (a queer Much Ado About Nothing), U Up (forbidden love among Border Patrol officers, don't ask, just trust), and a show called Catching a Cheese Pervert that frankly needs no further explanation. We also got into the nuts and bolts of how each of us is covering Fringe this year, from long-form roundup episodes to daily TikTok recaps. And we had a really honest, nuanced conversation about AI-generated poster art - including the tension between giving grace to artists on shoestring budgets and the feeling that it signals something about how much thought went into the promotional package. It didn't stay one-sided, which I appreciated.

Also: huge shoutout to u/nefariousplotz on this very subreddit, whose geographical breakdown of Fringe venues got a genuine on-air mention from Ryan B. as an essential scheduling tool. You're doing the lord's work. If you're heading out to Fringe, the episode has a lot of practical venue and travel advice too: plan by neighbourhood, bring snacks, and do not try to run from the Aki Studios to Soulpepper with 20 minutes between shows. I speak from experience.
