Working part-time while studying MSc Data Science at TU Wien?

Hi everyone,
I’m planning to apply for the Master’s in Data Science at TU Wien next year as an international student.
Since I’ll need to support myself financially, I have two questions:
Is it realistic to work a part-time job (15–20 hours/week) while studying this master’s?
If the workload is too high, is it common to take fewer courses each semester and finish the master’s in about 3 years instead of 2? Does this have any disadvantages for future employment?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your personal experience. Thanks!
Btw I’m aiming for good grades, building a strong portfolio, and eventually working in AI/Data Science, so I’m wondering what most students in this program actually do.

Notarisation of documents

Hi everyone,

I am currently preparing my documents for application at TU Wien. I am from a country which does not need to do any certifications/legalizations. My documents were issued in English so there is no need for any translation. I have notarised copies of my documents, but the notarisation text is in my native language, not English. Is this a problem? Does anyone have any experience with this particular thing. Thanks

MSc in Business Informatics / Data Science

Hi everyone,
I’m currently studying Management Information Systems (MIS) in Turkey and I’m planning to apply for either the MSc Business Informatics or MSc Data Science at TU Wien after graduation.

My expected profile:
GPA: ~3.10/4.00
IELTS: 6.5
Bachelor’s degree: Management Information Systems (MIS)
Language of instruction: Turkish

Relevant coursework
Mathematics & Statistics
Mathematics I (5 ECTS)
Mathematics II (5 ECTS)
Statistics I (5 ECTS)
Statistics II (5 ECTS)
Operations Research (6 ECTS)
Quantitative Methods for Business Decision Making (5 ECTS)

Computer Science
Information Technology (5 ECTS)
Introduction to Programming & Algorithms (5 ECTS)
Programming Languages I – Python (5 ECTS)
Programming Languages II – C# / ASP.NET (5 ECTS)
Object-Oriented Programming (4 ECTS)
Algorithms & Data Structures (4 ECTS)
Database & Database Management Systems (4 ECTS)
Artificial Intelligence (5 ECTS)
Information Security & Business Continuity (5 ECTS)
Systems Analysis & Design (4 ECTS)
Fundamentals of Web Design (4 ECTS)
Visual Programming (4 ECTS)

Business Informatics / Business
Management Information Systems (5 ECTS)
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) (5 ECTS)
Process Analysis (5 ECTS)
Introduction to Business (5 ECTS)
Principles of Economics (5 ECTS)
Basic Principles of Accounting (5 ECTS)
Entrepreneurship (5 ECTS)
Management & Organisation (5 ECTS)
Marketing (5 ECTS)

I’ve already compared my curriculum with TU Wien’s admission requirements, but I know the admission committee evaluates the actual course contents, not just the course titles. That’s why I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have gone through the admission process.

From my own comparison, I think I might have weaker coverage in the following areas:

Linear Algebra
Discrete Mathematics
Probability Theory (as a standalone course)
Software Engineering
Operating Systems
Computer Architecture / Computer Organization
Theoretical Computer Science
Advanced Machine Learning

My questions are:
Based on my background, what do you think my chances are for MSc Business Informatics and
MSc Data Science?

Do the areas listed above seem like the ones where the admission committee would most likely assign supplementary courses (Auflagen), or am I overlooking something?

Roughly how many supplementary ECTS would you expect (5–10, 15–20, or closer to 30)?

Is a GPA of around 3.10/4.00 considered competitive for these programs?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who was admitted from an MIS, Information Systems, Business Informatics, or a similar background.

Thanks in advance!

Entrance exam Architecture

Hii, I am taking part in the entrance exam for the Architecture bachelor, just wondering what types of questions to expect on the exam? I know its taken from the script provided on the TU website, but are they literally going to be from the text? Anything more practical or about connections between the articles? If anybody knows the approx. difficulty I would love to hear it since there isnt much info about it out there :)

Study Confirmation Letter problem with Dorms

I received my admission letter for the winter semester 25/26 using which I want to get enrolled in the 26/27 semester. Hence, I started applying for dorms. Some dorms require a "study confirmation letter" to apply (it's mandatory). As I have not enrolled yet, I do not have anything other than my admission letter, so I upload that.

Then some accommodation providers (specifically OEAD Housing, Viennabase and Wihast) told me that they need "an actual letter from the university". When I asked them what is the issue with this document, they said it's a document for the winter semester 25/26. When I showed them the sentence where it says it's also valid for 2 following semesters, they still said, " sorry we need an actual letter". Did any of you face this issue? What should I do?

Landin a job in AI&Data Science field in Vienna

Hi guys! I am non-EU, and I got accepted into two master programs at TU Wien (Logic and AI, and Data Science). I have a BSc degree in Computer Science. I am fluent in English, native in Turkish, and I have something around B1.1 level German (though I highly doubt Germany German B1 is equal to Austrian German B1). And I am 25.

Vienna has always been my dream city since I was in 10th grade, and I always wanted to study at TU Wien. But I am also very anxious about landing a job in the DS field and earning a decent amount of money to cover my living expenses and start a good career journey.

I know knowing German is a must in Austria. So in the first 6 months of moving there, I will work on my language skills. But with my Student Residence Permit, I only get to work for 20 hrs a week.
I know the job market in Austria is relatively small and modest. But if you can answer these questions from your experience, I would really appreciate it.
My questions are:

  1. Are there enough entry-level/working student jobs? Or is it easy to land a remote job, like from Germany? I want to have a steady career. Studying at such a prestigious university is very beneficial I believe. But the possibility of not working until I graduate at the age of 27-28 really stresses me out.

  2. How hard is it actually to find a job when you are non-EU, even if you learn German?

Other than my questions, if you have any advices for me, I would also really appreciate that. thank you very much!

Need help about English Proficiency Documents for MSc application for international applications

Hello, so ı am preparing my documents to apply to msc in tuwien and they are asking for documents with apostilles. To prove my English proficiency ı am going to give my TOEFL IBT results documents, but ı was wondering do ı need a apostil on that as well, since the document is the same all around the world? I am asking because it is 2 pages, and to get an apostil process is long and expensive for documents in English in Turkey.

Supplementary courses deadline

Hey guys, this has probably been asked before but I looked it up and couldn’t find an exact answer - does anyone know what the actual end date is for the supplementary courses? I mean it says during your first year but what’s the deadline? I also have read that they don’t actually really care if you do them in your first year - does anyone know how trustworthy that is? Thanks!

Fragen an euch:

  3. Würde mich riesig über eure Erfahrungen freuen💕

Application/Enrollment after paying fees of another Uni

Hello everyone,

Currently, i have been accepted to FH Technikum Wien. But, i will also apply to TU Wien at the end of July. FH Technikum Wien requires me to pay deposit right now, and will require me to pay tuition fee and ÖH fee too. My question is, can I cancel my enrollment to FH Technikum Wien after I pay everything if I will be accepted from TU Wien? Because the admission procedure of TU Wien may last too long (as far as I know) and it would give me an idea to pay the relevant fees of the other one?

Informatik Aufnahmetest

Hey an alle!

Building connections for a future PhD at TU Wien

Hi everyone,

I’m an Italian student, and next year I’ll be an Erasmus student at TU Wien, where I’ll be taking courses in the Data Science Master’s program.

In the future, I’d like to pursue a PhD in Austria. From what I’ve read online, it seems that many PhD positions are offered through professors who lead research groups and select students to join them.

I was wondering whether it would make sense to contact professors during my Erasmus semester and ask if I could contribute to their research group on a voluntary basis. My goal would be to gain research experience, build connections, and hopefully improve my chances of pursuing a PhD with them in the future.

Has anyone here done something similar or had this kind of opportunity? Do you think it’s a good idea?

Recently admitted to Visual Computing Master programme - Need advice

Hi :) Thanks for opening my post.

I've recently been admitted to the Visual Computing Master program, and this is something I didn't even expect. I would love to pursue this as I live and breathe computer graphics, and want to pursue rendering research in the future. However, I'm in a bit of a dilemma financially.

As a student from North Macedonia, I'm a non-EU student. So I would need to provide proof of sufficient funding for each year for the residence permit in Austria, so I can study there. This makes sense, but the amount is a bit outside of what I have saved up. I have enough saved up for a year, but not for more.

Seeing many posts in this subreddit, I'm very discouraged as I see it's very difficult to find a job as a non-EU student (paricularly if you don't speak German enough to be useful at said job, like me). I was wondering, what are the prospects of working at TU Wien itself? I am fairly open to the possibility to work part-time as TUW, as part of a paid assistant, in a paid student project, and generally anything related to the master. Is this more feasible than just applying to jobs unrelated to TUW?

I know that the grants for non-EU students are basically non-existent, and if they exist they will probably be taken by students with near-perfect grades and achievements. So I'm not counting on that.

I'm prepared to sacrifice a lot of time for this, but I just need a realistic answer for this. If you have any advice I would be very grateful if you could comment, even if it's a tiny piece of information.

I have been admitted to german universities, and I have been granted a DAAD scholarship for there. These programs have similar if slightly worse curricula (Uni Bonn, Uni Saarland). It seems ridiculous that I'm even entertaining the fact to go to TUW, but I really think the research groups are filled with amazing people that I would want to meet, learn from and eventually even contribute to. Having been part of a conference I always see papers originating form TUW, and that gives me a solid feeling that the research being done there is what I want to do.

Should I start searching for jobs right now? Should I defer to the next semester? Will that be enough?

I'm sorry if this doesn't make any sense, I just thank you for reading until the end. Hope you have a wonderful day.

Why when I search if this university is good most people say it is not?

I was curious about a master of science in STEM subjects, but most of the time i see people not suggesting this university because exams are too hard? Any opinion of people currently undergoing a STEM degree at tu Wien?

Sort of complicated question about residence permit stuff.

I have a question -

I will break this down so it's easier to understand as its a bit convoluted:

My residence permit application is a bit too close to the start of the semester/enrollment deadline as is comfortable.

I have accommodation that I'd rather not back out of, as it will incur charges and complications.

I am from the USA. I can enter Austria visa free for 90 days. It takes 90 days for the residence permit to come back provided all goes well, and my appointment is a couple weeks before I land in Austria.

My appointment in my home country is August 18th. Plus 90 days is November 16th.

I land in Austria September 1. Plus 90 days is December 1. So if I'm going by projected processing times I should have the RP before I'd have to leave the country.

So maybe I can stay in the dorms while I wait to study if I get the RP before I have to leave even though my projected semester was fall 2026?

I was thinking, if I can't enroll that semester and I am living in the dorms, can I defer to the next semester while still living there, with an active RP, without any problems, provided I will be studying in the spring rather than the fall? So before the 90 days of my free entry is up, I will purportedly have the RP, and can begin living in Vienna without issue, and then start my semester in spring 2027.

Sorry if I've said the same thing over and over it's just a bit hard to explain.

But it should be fine right? I am just preparing for worst case scenarios.
