308 CSASS bulked and is now…6.5 SASS?

This rifle has progressively gotten longer and longer, which is typically the opposite of what happens to my rifles. I love the csass/mrgg-a concept and I’ll probably pin together another one, but for now I’m leaning more heavily into a purpose-built DMR/SASS. Also made the leap to Creedmoor to squeeze better ballistics out of this 18” barrel. Got a bit tired of seeing my 308 get blown around past 750 and frankly, shooting 150 rounds of full power starts to wear on shoulder.

Just one trip with the new barrel so still need to work out a good dope but AB spat out decent solutions for 400, 600, and 750 with Berger 130gr OTMs.

Centurion receivers, Criterion 18” barrel (rifle gas), CAT DD suppressor, Sabre carrier/JP HP bolt, ATACR 4-16 + 509T, G SSA-E trigger. Random bits and bobs otherwise.

Going from 16->18” barrel in 308, what should I expect?

Bit of a practical and broader philosophy of use question for the hive - currently shooting a 16” MEGA mid gas 308 barrel in a quasi DMR rifle. I’m content with the accuracy of the barrel, it’ll do just over a minute at 100YD assuming I do my part. That’s acceptable for a large frame gas gun imo.

What I’m seeing is that it starts to become more of a (literal) hit or miss proposition past 600; 750 is absolutely doable but there’s a lack of consistency that’s a bit frustrating. I understand the ballistic limitations of the cartridge and don’t need it to be a 1,000yd laser beam, but I’d like to get those hits at 750 with a bit more confidence the rifle/bullet will hold up. And ideally I’d like to do so without turning this into a 22” barreled musket.

Question: have any of you all made relatively incremental barrel length increases and if so, did it deliver any meaningful improvement in performance? In my case I’d probably step up to 18” rifle gas, eyeing a Criterion or V7 barrel. Math says I’d gain maybe 50-75FPS max which feels marginal. But curious to hear what you all think. Again, overall goal is to move a bit further away from the csass concept without turning it into a true “sniper rifle” that’s a nightmare to maneuver with.

Gas gun goofin

Happy Friday folks. Some of you may remember me as the guy who bought the wrong ATACR by mistake 😭

I was able to fix that mistake for about $80 net so life goes on. Got a good zero on it and called it a day with a few hits at 750 in fading light. It’s an all day long 600 yard gun and 750 is plenty doable. Quite happy with how this is shooting.

Bonus picture of some spicy Superperformance. They loaded this lot…warm. Didn’t love how that brass looked tbh.

Afternoon Cup + Latte “Art”

Good Brothers Cinnamon Roll pulled at 18.5:33 198F. Really enjoyable coffee and I find pulling it a bit short eliminates a dry/powdery taste that can creep into it.

“Latte art” remains a questionable work in progress. In other notes my Meraki is still humming along after the better part of a year and 3-4 drinks per day. I was expecting some kind of issue by now but so far, so good. The grinder leaves something to be desired but the machine produces good espresso if you do your part.

Happy Friday

Just wishing the gang a happy Friday. My MAWLs came back from RMA so I have a good excuse to get under nods this weekend. And on the large frame side of the house, I managed to purchase the wrong Atacr 😭 so that’s been a fun mistake.

Hope everyone has a safe, fun weekend.

I’ve made a mistake

So last week I asked the group about the ATACR 4-16 for my 16” gas gun, DMR-ish 308. Universal praise, perfect match of glass and goals.

Found a screaming deal on said scope and bought it. However! I was a big dumb dumby and didn’t notice this is a 50mm objective, not the smaller 42 I wanted. A fairly expensive oversight but one that I’ll probably just live with. I took it for a spin in failing light from 500-750 and the image quality was truly superb. This would be an unbelievable hunting scope but should still fill the “tactical” role I need it to. SFP is a bummer but the FOV at 16x is generous so I don’t anticipate spending a lot of time at intermediate magnification.

Don’t be like me…read the details.

ATACR 4-16 Enjoyers Step Right In

I have a 16” 308 that’s typically used between 400-750 yards in a variety of contexts. Currently using a Vudu 1-10 and while it’s actually pretty impressive given what it’s asked to do, by nature it’s a series of compromises and the 10x is only “usable” glass-wise. Probably better suited to a small frame rifle/distance. I’d like to gain image clarity, parallax adjustment, and full featured turrets.

I’ve been looking at the ATACR 4-16 and it seems almost universally loved on everything from these kind of mid range gas gun to bolt guns and everything in between. For those who use one, what sorts of range envelope would you consider appropriate (particularly towards the top end)? Any regrets? Other scopes in the class I should consider?

Maiden Voyage out to 750

First rounds through the new gas gun and I couldn’t be much happier. Printed just over a minute with 118LR and probably had more in it if I took more time. Holds were stable and easy mode to 600, 750 required a bit of work with crosswinds but no big drama.

Two FTFs on some ancient “special ball” but the other 60 rounds all did their thing. Recoil was modest, this old Mega barrel is beautifully gassed. It’s a *bit* overgassed with the can but not to the point where I feel compelled to do anything about it. Vigorous 2PM ejection with the can, 3PM without it. Works for me.

Super Safety Sunday

Dispensed some freedom thru the Arcfire V2 this evening, runs like a top with an OCM5 and the gas turned *way* down. ROF feels great, timing feels great. Gassy but that’s showbiz

11.x” Centurion CHF that’s chopped down. BRT .057 gas tube. OCM5. Noveske SBR lower, hodgepodge upper. Tiger stripe long sleeve for good vibes.

Painted the csass

Newest rifle managed to avoid spray paint for I think 5 days, then I got antsy and broke out the Rapco.

This is mostly field drab with some earth brown and lusterless olive drab mixed in. FWIW, this shade of olive dries very similarly to field drab so while it’s a nice accent, don’t use it if you’re trying to create significant contrast.

Hodge podge CSASS project

First large frame gas gun so trying to stick to fairly known quantity stuff. Going for a practical 600-750YD weapon that isn’t a complete pig and holds up to wind better than 77gr. Waiting on the can but otherwise this is pretty close.

The included bolt catch doesn’t reach the bottom bolt lugs, which is…interesting. Seems like a not so unusual large frame issue? I may remove some material where it contacts the plunger to increase range of travel.

Whole ass bottle of clp burst in the bin that these live in when not being used so I figured I’d take some pictures while cleaning it out. I was too lazy to grab the gun belt but it’s standard fare Axl. By all means make fun of my baofeng, patches, whatever.

Favorite and most useful thing here is the platatac pack, it’s really nicely executed. We all know what the deal is with SPCs, the base rig is a T3 spear that I’ve messed around with. Happy to answer any questions.

I re-painted this lower and while it was drying I decided to play optics/laser musical chairs. It balances really well but I may have jumped the shark on this one, no clue what this is gonna be useful for.

At least it looks cool.
