Does anyone remember this guy?
I grew up (part of the time) around here in the 70s & 80s and am wondering if anyone else remembers "Aloysius." Looked like R Crumb's 'Mr. Natural' (old guy with long white beard). Used to drive around (and maybe live in?) an old modified step van/what looked like a former ice-cream truck. A 'street preacher' type of fellow, often parked at major intersections in & around PG/Carmel/Monterey proselytizing to passing vehicles.
He once bounced a tennis ball at my grandmother's car, which was stopped in traffic at a light (maybe around Holman's Hwy & 1, or Carpenter & Cabrillo Hwy, when those intersections were tamer). And I, riding in the backseat with the window down, caught it! He had written on the ball in marker: "LOVE ONE ANOTHER." Another time I was hobbling around CHOMP on crutches with a broken toe and he tried to persuade adolescent me to let him, like, 'faith heal' me.
I think I recall that his initials were "AAA," like Aloysius A. [lastname starting with A]. And he might have even had "A.A.A." written on the outside of his step van.
What's jogging my memory & prompting this question is that I'm visiting my brother, who lives here now, and I see that the ballot for Calif governor lists 61 candidates. So the other thing I remember about Aloysius is that he would manage to get his name on the ballot for various political offices...and he always got a handful of votes! (My grandmother would scoff, and my grandfather would always say something like, "Well, that's three more votes than I got." Hint: Grandpa wasn't running.)
Any oldtimers on this sub? Or if you know an oldtimer, would you ask them: Who exactly was Aloysius, and what was his backstory? Surely something interesting...
