I (40/F) have been asked out on one date consistently per week since April 1 by (49/M), with the occasional mid-week date (twice so far). During the week he doesn't text except to confirm logistics. On rare occasions, he texts something funny. He says his dating coach friend told him to avoid getting friendzoned by not texting the women he's dating.

We've had a defacto exclusivity talk...i think?! He looked at me with a smile during date #8 and said "At the moment, my eyes are on you. But I know you don't belong to me. You're not a caged bird. You might tell me you met a nice guy." Then he asked me about myself in a kinda playful tone "how many are you juggling?" and my response was "I like to hyperfocus"

Due to the ego sting that i felt from his "at the moment" statement, i didn't bother telling him that I stopped going on dates with other men once I felt my interest was locked into him.

Was it too early for him to have made a grand declaration like "noo don't travel! Be mine! I want to claim you as my girlfriend!" am I expecting too much?

He did make future statements though like "When you come back from your trip, send me a recipe that you'd like me to cook for us both."

A few days later we went on our last date before my flight as I'm currently traveling to visit family (this was our 9th date) and i arrived looking cute wore my new dress and earrings, put effort. The date was at his place but it was so low effort on his part he said he was exhausted from his single dad duties and let's watch something and order dinner. Then he revealed to me that he has been on welfare and is trying to get off it by applying to a new gig. I don't judge him for financial problems at all. It clarified retrospectively why his dates were all low budget albeit fun and creative. Lots of walking, wandering, free entry art shows, $5 ticket museum, ordering appetizers only at the restaurant, or picking deli restaurants, coffee shops, etc.

Is his financial struggle the reason why he didn't say anything to take me off the market or am I wasting my time with a guy who believes in letting the chips fall where they may? To be fair, he has been separated for two years, and had only finalized his divorce court proceedings last month. His ex left him and shacked up with a younger man. She was the masculine force in their dynamic; she paid the rent, was the breadwinner, and was the one who proposed to him.
