My view on MBP M6 vs M5

Normally random redditor views are irrelevant and one shall build many of them, but I would like to share my view on few lessons I learnt with technology and "let's be first" type of approach.

I was a big Thinkpad user (their keyboard is superior compared to anyone, even Apple) starting with X1 Carbon Gen 3 and then few generations further. I remember I took the touch screen option, because it was only available with high resolution screen. I also took the WWAN option because I though I will need it. For context, I use laptop around the world, so I thought it may help

  • Touch screen: I used it at most 10 times since 2015 till today. Sometimes I used it to zoom some Adobe Reader stuff, but never ever for any other reason.
    • I am an iPad PRO user with the Magic Keyboard, and I only ever use touch on ipad if I can't do something with keyboard/touchpad, for example to close the video on a youtube app, it is faster with touch. I simply cannot imagine that macbook software would be so shitty that one would extensively need touch over touchpad/mouse/keyboard
    • Eventually I use the touch when I remove the ipad from the keyboard. But this is not something we'll be able to do with the macbook, so I think this part is irrelevant.
  • Connectivity with WAN: Never never ever used, didn't even try it. The stories of "let's not use public wifi or phone access point" were never an issue for me. With Apple OS, when one has phone close to PC, it will automatically offer to connect, so no point to pay additional money to have second sim card installed.
  • New design: Being first trial rabbit means a risk. The rumor says MBP M6 will have a thinner design. This risks thermal issues, quality problems that are potentially not yet known. I prefer not to risk it for example.
    • I was the one to take the first X1 Extreme PC and I learnt the lesson. The PC has a constant throttling because of heating problems. Acknowledged by Lenovo. What can we do? Nothing :)
    • Here MBP M5 has clear advantage, it is 5y long design, Apple has proven the structure and did internal modifications down the 5y period, to ensure correct thermal and structural setup.
  • New LCD: Here I am not worried so much, even if Samsung is yet to prove the quality of the displays. They are still running the reliability. The Macbook retina displays are proven to work very well
    • This could be a good reason to try with M6, the first good reason so far.
  • Dynamic Island: Here I am not worried so much because Apple has them in phones already. How it is lined with new LCD, it is different story.
  • Innovation overall: I still remember the touchpad area for Fx buttons, which were an absolute crap of a feature. I wouldn't like to be the person to try such new features again.

To be clear, I made a move to MBP, I'm no longer Windows user. The computers are 5 years ahead of the competition.

In my view, if the dilema is do I wait for M6 or I take today M5, I think with M5 one is in a much better position when it comes to the product reliability compared to the M6 redesign. Personally I will wait around M8ish before I will consider to purchase new one.
