Official patch and Hull Number of the JS Kitashio (Gate S2 Submarine)

Part of an official collaboration with the JMSDF during an open house for one of their amphibious assault ships.

https://x.com/gate_anime/status/2090000822260441340

Some interesting notes:

  • Oyashio-class hull numbers stopped at SS-600 with the Mochishio in 2006, so this confirms that this is a fictional hull rather than being based on a real one like the later Hayabusa-class ships. It also likely means that the crippled Nishishio from the prologue/Ch1 is hull SS-601.
  • We already know from the LN Prologue/Manga Ch1 that the Kitashio has done diver ops with Aqua, and it makes me wonder if the patch was redesigned to fit the mission, or if this is a happy accident.
  • The "Northern" bit is what puzzles me the most. On the one hand, it could refer to the fact that the Kitashio's port of Vaasa is north of its primary operating area in the Avion Sea, but it could also refer to wherever it was originally deployed on Earth, like around the Kurils.

Insane theory: Lelei is Hardy and Gate Creation is a Bootstrap Paradox

So, most of this is based on content from Gaiden 1, so please bear with me.

We know from Gate Season 1 that Hardy has unusually good compatibility with Lelei's body, and I've always wondered why. We also know from Season 1 that Lelei is the only person out there besides Hardy that can both open and design Gates.

It gets weird in Gaiden 1. We are told that in addition to the Gate power, Hardy gave Lelei a book of research notes that she produced when she was still a human outlining how to make a Gate. But here's the weird thing: the book seems relatively new, and Hardy herself has been a God for hundreds of years. At the end of Gaiden 1, the book is stolen and deletes itself. By that point, Lelei supposedly knows everything she needs to know, and constructs her own notebook in Gaiden 4, during which she also completes a Gate structure and has a chance to experience extradimensional space herself.

Now, picture this. We know that Gates can connect to different points in time and space. We know that due to the timeskip from the end of the Gaiden leading into Season 2, but we also know that because the Empire's arrival in Falmart doesn't line up properly from the historical events where they could have been transported over from Earth (Gaiden 1 strongly implies it was Pompeii or some other volcanic eruption, and the whole town got warped over).

If that's the case, consider this situation:

  • Some event happens later on that forces Lelei to go back in time.
  • Lelei becomes Hardy
  • Hardy uses her Gate powers to make a Gate at Alnus
  • Eventually, Lelei is born
  • Eventually the Empire invades Japan. Itami meets Lelei
  • Hardy calls over Itami to confirm that she has the right event, and possesses Lelei easily because it's her own body.
  • Hardy gives Lelei the Gate-making ability. She also uses the same Gate-creation technology to obtain her own notebook from the future and gives it to Lelei
  • The notebook is stolen and deleted.
  • Lelei creates a new notebook and Gate.
  • Some event happens and Lelei is sent back in time.

So far Season 2 has not added any additional fuel to the fire as Lelei doesn't show up again until somewhere in Volume 4, which is not translated yet, but this seems like the obvious way to make all of these odd plot points work.

Thoughts? Ramifications?

Anyone have luck with dating Etain yet? (DLC4 Spoilers)

So I was already involved with Alisa at the time of this playthrough. After two back and forth conversations, >!Etain appears in my house and accuses me of two-timing her, no matter what options I picked in the prior dialogue tree, and then attacks with a knife. It's very evident from the diary entries in her house that she's a Yandere,!< which to be honest sounds way more fun than Alisa. Has anyone tried going through the process with no active romances and picked the obvious dialogue options that point towards romance? Curious if something else would happen for my next playthrough, or if this is the only result.

Skies Series Updates and Status of Skies 4

Hi Everyone! Since r/gate is doing this new Fanfic Friday thing I figured I’d let everyone know what’s going on with the Skies Franchise

What is the Skies Series?

The Skies Series is a set of three completed novel-length works set in the Gate: Jietai universe. They are, in order:

  1. A Sky Full of Fire
  2. A Sky Full of Thunder
  3. A Sky Full of Starlight

I’ve never heard of this before. Why should I read this?

From the summary: Dr. Carol Dawson, a NASA Engineering and Public Relations consultant, is offered the chance to support an American-Japanese joint space program on the far side of the Gate. During her mission, Dawson must contend with superstitious natives, secretive officers, and a risky international plot with the fate of two worlds hanging in the balance.

Some reasons why you should read this:

  1. While most other Gate fanfic focus on retreading the story told in Gate, Skies skips all of that and picks up right where the anime ends. This means you do not sit through the 40th rendition of the Battle of Alnus Hill. You are getting something completely new from page 1.
  2. Skies novels are technothrillers that emphasize characters, political maneuvering, and technology discussions. Think less Call of Duty and more Tom Clancy. The shooting takes a while to start, but when it does, it matters.
  3. As mentioned earlier, each Skies entry is a complete, novel-length work. They are planned out from start to finish with a clear beginning, middle, and end, and you will not be waiting for hundreds of thousands of words to see the characters and conflicts make progress.
  4. If you enjoy space and aviation, or even found yourself with a passing curiosity for either after Artemis 2, Skies is for you.
  5. Skies is one of extremely few fics, to my knowledge, that delves into the events and world elements of the upcoming Gate Season 2: Tides of Conflict anime. Starting in Thunder you have the opportunity to get your feet wet on some of the ideas presented in the new show. Don’t worry, you do not need to have seen any of the new upcoming content to understand what is going on; it's explained like it’s all new.

I have already read these. Are they worth checking out again?

Yes, because they have all been updated! Last February I went back through all three entries and worked on them to ensure that they are canon-compliant with the recent translations of the Tides of Conflict light novels. I have also included a handful of additions to help ease the story into the upcoming sequel. Most of the changes were minor terminology items (it turns out winged folk are called Avi, not Monarchs), but there are a handful of interesting additions that should add further depth to the events. There are no dramatic departures though; the core story, events, and outcomes are unchanged.

So what’s up with Skies 4?

As I mentioned back when news of the sequel first came out, the Skies series is getting a 4th entry. This one will focus on the world elements introduced in Gate Season 2: Tides of Conflict. As of this post, the draft has twelve of an estimated eighteen chapters completed, and I am aiming to have the full manuscript done by the time that the anime is released.

Why not release chapters now? When can we expect to see them?

I recognize that incomplete or delayed work is a recurring problem for fanfic readers. I would like to ensure an even, predictable reading experience by having a completed work and all chapters ready in advance. Doing it this way will allow me to release a new chapter every week.

Additionally, Skies 4 requires a general understanding of Tides of Conflict’s key characters to follow. There is a specific event that happens in the story that I feel makes for the ideal starting point for a Season 2 fic. Once we hit that point in the show you will know everything you need to know, and I will start releasing chapters.

That will take forever! Can you throw us a bone in the meantime?

Sure! Once Oshi and Studio M2 provide the release date for Season 2, I plan on adding a tack-on chapter to the end of Starlight, and I’m working on a funny oneshot as well. Before then, you can check out my two other Gate fics if you haven’t already:

The Last Stroke of Midnight - A Gate opens in Disney World.

An Atmosphere of Dread - After the anime ends, the COVID pandemic begins.

I still have plenty to do, but I am looking forward to sharing A Sky Full of Shadows with everyone early next year!

War Movies like Gettysburg (1993) that are 70% officers discussing philosophy and tactics

Basically, I'm looking for movies focused on a single battle where the emphasis is on the officers, their interactions, and deliberating what's going on and what they're going to do next.

In addition to Gettysburg, some other movies I've seen that scratch the itch:

Enemy Below (1957)

The Crossing (2000)

What I am NOT looking for:

Movies that cover multiple battles - Glory, Saving Private Ryan

Movies that are focused on general infantry engagements, not on the command level - Warfare (2025), Black Hawk Down, 1917

Movies that are strictly focused on being a character thriller - U571, Pearl Harbor (2001), Dunkirk.

GATE Gaiden 3 is the only time we see someone in local armor with a modern weapon.

Although the rest of the Gaiden is not great, it does produce this gem of a Dragon Armored Itami going toe-to-toe with a squad of centaurs armed with an MP7.

The summary for Gaiden 3 is complete, and you can find it here:
https://gate.fandom.com/wiki/Gaiden_3:_Dragon_Knight

The first half of the story is weird or trash, but the Battle of Barrent was described in enough detail to properly document, and I had a lot of fun with that part. The picture above takes place near the end of that battle.

PSA: Don't Read Gaiden 3.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through Gaiden 3 to write the summary for the Gate Wiki. I would encourage everyone including u/AgentV1967 to skip this one. While it makes a small collection of interesting points about Falmart's weather and geography, and while I know that most of you have acclimated to some of Gate's other questionable elements, it's not worth the gore, the detestable characters, Tuka getting assaulted, or the [last chance, have eye bleach handy] >!multi-paragraph centaur blowjob scene!<.

I promise you, you can go from Gaiden 2 with Bozes and Tomita's wedding right to Gaiden 4 with Lady's Gate Sabotage Plot and miss nothing of importance.

If anyone can suggest some good selective amnesia methods, I'd really appreciate it right about now.

We have one frame to work with so it's time to start attacking the mystery. Rena is looping, here's my proof:

https://preview.redd.it/vxzs8nvv2n8h1.png?width=342&format=png&auto=webp&s=35c7be2bd21152a79e8506d578d3c26c7c3191ee

Rena has naturally blue eyes, but in the new KV we have a clear red intrusion in there. In Gou/Sotsu this has been an indicator of>! a looper!<. Compare to other eye swaps like shiny blue eyes which in Mei indicatate >!that the person has HS!<, or the lizard eyes which indicate that >!the viewer of that character has HS!<.

It's surprising how early Edajima shows up in the original Gate manga, once you know where to look for him...

Edajima shows up all the way at the Jade palace situation, and plays a roll in encouraging the ambassador to work with Sugawara. I was surprised, as I knew from the Gaiden he was there, but had forgotten how prominently Sao had placed him in the manga adaptation.

From here his roll only gets bigger and bigger, and then he becomes one of the two lead JSDF characters in Tides of Conflict.

Does the Special Region have constellations? If so, what are the stories behind them?

We don't know much about the skies of the SR beyond their one sun, one moon, four planets, and that in Gaiden 2 we are told that they do NOT have a north star.

But presumably they would have constellations. Every primitive Earth culture developed a set that was used for simple navigation and agriculture. In the West the stories behind constellations are based on legends regarding Roman/Greek dieties. In the East they were treated as a separate mirror-kingdom with its own courts and palaces.

Based on what little we know about the SR, its history, and its gods, what do you think their constellations are based on, and what might the stories be like?

Flashback to that time in the Gaiden when the JGSDF blew up a pirate ship with rifle grenades.

Gaiden 1 is a wonderful example why Japan doesn't need to send a large number of ships for Tides of Conflict. When your enemy is all wooden sailboats, modern equipment just deletes your foes before they can do anything about it.

Odette on search duty from the most recent raws.

Avi are a big deal in Season 2, and I feel like this panel really encapsulates what they are, and what their job is.

As for how this works from an aerospace engineering standpoint... Yannai doesn't even try. In Sky Full of Thunder I argued that Avi subconsciously use a simple magic field around their legs that acts like the tail feather fan in birds, because that's the only way I can see an Avi having control authority with a body like that.

Gaiden 4: Silver Crystal Princess, Summary

And here it is. After four days an nearly a thousand pages, I have finished summarizing the last of the three Gaiden that matter for Season 2.

This one's a real doozy, wrapping up information on Mabel, introducing Lady Fre Randall/Bagg, and digging deep into Lelei's past and the ins and outs of how a Gate works and how to build and activate one.

There isn't any real urgency for me on going back and completing a summary for Gaiden 3, so if someone else wants to take a stab at it first they may. Otherwise I'll get around to it sometime later this year.

Gaiden 2: Grand Festival of the Dark God, Summary

I am continuing my quest to write up summaries of the relevant Gaiden LNs so that everyone has access to the key events before Season 2 comes out. This summary covers the second Gaiden, which contains information on all the existing Apostles, how the JSDF throw a wedding, and some information Edajima Goro, Mabel Forn, on Mai Tomita.

It does NOT contain a summary of the sections describing Rory's past, as these have already been largely detailed on Rory's character page by another user.

I will be skipping volume 3 of the Gaiden for now since >!Tuka's Father being alive!<really isn't that important to the events of Tides of Conflict, and proceeding to Volume 4 next, which involves a major struggle against the woman who becomes the main Antagonist of Season 2.

Gaiden Book 1: South Sea Castaway, Summary

In the Leadup to Gate Season 2, I am trying to put together summaries of the key points from the Gaidens onto the wiki. There are three Gaidens that actually contribute to the events of Season 2: Volumes 1, 2, and 4. I feel that it is important that the English-speaking community know what they're missing, in the event that it isn't covered by the upcoming anime.

This is the summary for Volume 1. It introduces Special Region sailing culture, how piracy works in the SR, and Aqua (mermaids) including Kemmy who we meet early in Season 2, and who those of you who are reading the manga raws have already run across.

This summary is based on translations provided by SublimeWay and released on the r/gate discord.

Key point of the article:

>Jared Isaacman told lawmakers on Monday that SpaceX and Blue Origin, the agency’s two lunar lander contractors, say they could have their spacecraft ready for the next Artemis mission in Earth orbit in late 2027

Berger's law at work means Artemis 3 NET Q1 2028.
