Trying to slowly wean off after a lot of cold turkey failures. The safe being necessary is disappointing, but more reason to stop.
[30/M] Western PA (USA) - Down to discuss life, the universe, and everything

Hey y'all! I used to have several pen pals as a kid and really enjoyed the ritual of writing and receiving letters. I like the idea of keeping up regular correspondence with someone and making new friends along the way. I also recently bought a new electric typewriter and some nice stationary and need a good excuse to do some writing someone besides myself will read.
I get that most people are probably going to be hesitant to jump straight to giving out a mailing address. Emailing to start is perfectly fine with me.
I'm open to discussing pretty much anything, whether it's venting about life or geeking out about interests.
Some background information about myself:
Hobbies:
I am very mercurial when it comes to hobbies. I like falling down rabbit holes with new interests and exploring new fields. Some of the more interesting examples include SCUBA diving, geocaching, field botany, herping, and rock-hounding.
One of my more recent fixations is collecting and archiving physical media, mainly movies and music at the moment. I have been challenging myself to branch out into new genres of film and music. I'd love to hear your suggestions!
I also have a lifelong love of reading and writing, although my wiriting is admittedly a bit out of practice. I mainly read nonfiction, but certain fiction series like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Dune have a special place in my heart. I'd love to do a one-on-one "book club."
I spend a lot of time playing video games, but I wouldn't described myself as a "gamer" at this point in my life. Most of my recent gaming consists of friend-slop-of-the-week and playing Pokémon emulations on my phone during office downtime.
Other Interests:
My two daughters cats (Ladybird & Beatrix) and my partner are a majority of my world. I have a couple of pet moon crabs, but they aren't very good company. Aside from them, my interests are just as prone to change as my hobbies.
I love doing research deep dives on new topics. My weekends often end up being spent learning absolutely way too much about a topic I've never broached before. Getting to talk to people about their special interests or expertise is my favorite form of social interaction.
I enjoy traveling (honestly though, who doesn't?) the rare times I can afford it. We went to Iceland last year and are going to Tokyo in October. I am trying to force myself to learn some basic conversational Japanese so I'm not a complete stereotype of an ignorant American.
Occupation:
I currently work for a "three-letter agency," but not one of the fun ones unfortunately. Broadly speaking, I do investigative work. My background is largely in mental health and human services. If you're interested in psychology or true crime, I have some interesting (anonymized) stories I can share from my various jobs—potentially a lot of you have a strong stomach.
I'm in the process of applying to some psychology doctorate programs. My dream job has always been to be an assessment psychogist and I'm trying to make that a reality. I consider myself an admirer of Jung, even if he got a little "out there" with some of his ideas. I find it disappointing that most psychologists are averse to delving into the more philosophic aspects of psychology nowadays. Once I start graduate school I'm also going to start training at the nearest psychoanalytic institute.
I've reached the point in my collection journey where I must forgo buying movies to save for more space efficient shelves.
I took in the neighborhood stray last year. How it started vs how it's going:
It's been a bit over a year since the neighborhood stay I had been befriending in the alley decided to come inside the house. She has never even gotten close to the front door to leave since then. I still can't believe someone left such a sweet girl to live on the streets.
I had been seeing Beatrix walking down the alley behind my house at night for months. She was very shy and it took weeks of very patient interaction until she was comfortable enough to let me touch her. She was clearly not very confident outside and would scurry around anytime a person or another animal was around.
Once I earned her trust, she started coming staying around my house more. I would see her more and more often and she would get a bit closer to me each time she approached. I think she eventually started living primarily under my front porch.
Around midnight on June 13, 2025 (Friday the 13th), I heard my neighbor outside calling out for a lost dog. I opened the door to go help her look, only to find Beatrix patiently waiting for me on sidewalk. I sat with her on the porch and she rolled over to show me her belly, which was a huge step for such a shy cat.
After hanging out with her for a while, I just opened the front door and let her walk into my house. She hesitantly walked in before planting herself on the couch (the first picture is from right after she walked in). I think both of us knew at that moment that she wasn't going to be leaving. She spent almost the entirety of the next three days sleeping. She clearly wasn't resting well living outside.
It was clear from that point on that she decided that she trusted me completely. She had absolutely no issue with me picking her up, grooming her, or cleaning her (bathing is still an ongoing battle though). As long as I was in the house she was calm and collected no matter what was going on. I was pretty blown away that she had apparently decided she trusted me completely before even coming inside the house.
We spent weeks calling vets, shelters, and checking social media pages for lost pets. She was so sweet and trusting of humans that it was clear she was a pet and not a feral cat. I checked every missing cat post over a year back and didn't find any evidence someone was looking for her. We eventually came to the conclusion that whoever owned her previously didn't care enough to look.
Beatrix is so sweet and clearly grateful to have a safe home. She spends a lot of time sitting at the window that overlooks the alley she used to walk down. I feel like I can see her pondering the fact that she used to live out there. Her favorite part of the day is when I come home from work and we take a nap in the couch, with her curled up on my stomach.
I don't believe it's a coincidence that there is now a ~1 year-old grey cat wandering the same territory Beatrix used to, who showed up the same time of year as Beatrix did. I suspect someone in my neighborhood is buying kittens and turning them loose to live as "fully outside" cats. I imagine when Beatrix stopped coming around they just bought a new one. Unfortunately, after adopting a second cat from a shelter, our house is at maximum capacity. I am going to try to trap him and take him to the local shelter. We are very close to some major highways and it simply isn't safe for him.
