Woke up in the middle of the night tripping, WEEKS after??
I did a smaller dose about a month ago (unsure of exact amount — our kitchen scale didn't register it, though, so <1g) ground up and brewed into lemon juice tea, then strained. Quite enjoyable, no nausea or anything; I feel like I see myself in a kinder light now. I've felt a lot less self-loathing since and have had an easier time appreciating myself as a person. I got some nice visuals, but nothing too overwhelming. This is to say I didn't take a shitload, nor did I have any sort of extreme adverse experience. It WAS my first time, though. I'm also on antidepressants and do small weed edibles every now and then, which might be worth mentioning.
A few days ago, I was visiting home and was pretty stressed because of some family drama. When we're apart, my girlfriend and I like to fall asleep on call together because it helps us relax. She woke me up in the middle of the night because apparently I had been making some weird noises — whether by rolling around and scuffling on the mic or verbally, I'm not sure. I remember I was having a somewhat stressful dream in which I was tripping. Anyway, I woke up and I was STILL HAVING THE VISUALS! Exactly the same way as when I was actually tripping... everything was slightly wavy and weird and I'd see colorful fractal patterns when I closed my eyes or looked into the darker areas.
This actually freaked me out quite a bit in the moment. Since I know our brains can be weird about low-light conditions, I rushed to turn on my phone flashlight and just... shone it around the room, hoping the increased light would make my brain behave. It lasted maybe thirty seconds after I turned on the light, and in total, the experience was maybe a couple minutes. I ended up scrolling on my phone for a bit to settle my nerves before going back to bed.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? Is this normal? I'm actually currently in school to become an evolutionary biologist and so in hindsight, the whole thing was pretty cool. But the anxious part of me wants answers!
Detained.
(I'm holding him gently, he wasn't trying to wriggle out. He's just in air jail because he wants nothing more than to jam himself into a dark crevice between the furniture)
They arrived! Meet our new baby gidgee skink pair, taq polymerase and topoisomerase II 🥰
Taq/Polly and Topo for short, respectively. They're both quite skittish, but settling in nicely. Taq is extremely curious and likes to watch my gf and I, Topo just wants to jam himself into a hole and sleep. Understandable. I currently tell them apart by a little darker scale under and behind the eye on my left side... Taq has it, Topo doesn't. Extremely cute little guys. Hoping they're a male and female pair! Hard to tell at this age.
Bioactive doesn't have to equal expensive! Central Australian biotope for a pair of baby egernia stokesii. All for under $175.
Free 36×18×18'' tank from FB Marketplace, organic topsoil from the gardening store ($20), extra bag of orange sand from pet store (optional but gives the soil a nice orangey color to better fit the environment, $15-20ish), leaf litter from local arboretum's Australian section (absolutely free, sanitized by boiling), assorted sticks and logs (also free, sanitized via baking), and then the price of the UVB, heat lamp, and grow lights combined came out to around $50-75. The plants were bought from the arboretum's gift shop and are also native to Australia, because I like being as ecologically accurate as I can! About $50 for all three combined. You can be quite cheap with bioactives if you know what you're doing :)
Baby egernia stokesii (gidgee skink) tank and central Australian biotope! Residents pending.
36×18×18''. I'm definitely adding more rocks to the basking side, but I'm quite happy with it so far. All decor is brought from the Australian section of a local arboretum and home-sanitized for the babies' safety. Shoutout to Soil and Scales LLC for being patient with me after my car had troubles and I needed to put the animals on a brief hold. Stay tuned for baby skink pics.
Obligatory "she is LEASHED and I am holding onto it just a few inches from her body so she can't jump, this was only for a quick photo op, I never put her on the ground or anywhere she could come into close contact with avian germs, we had a carrier on standby in case she got spooked/there were birds," etc etc. I sent the photos to the reptile rescue we got her from (shout out to Creepy Critters Rescue in Los Banos, CA) and they loved it!
Ignore the mess, things have been busy 🤫 The plants are actual Australian natives from the Pogona genus's range, and so are the DISINFECTED(!!) logs and leaf litter (everyone salute your local arboretum)! Tank is 6 ft × 18 in × 24 in. She's a rescue from a hoarding/neglect situation, so I wanted to give her as much room as I could. She's on a substrate of mostly potting soil mixed with some orange sand for a more arid look. Her temps are usually around 80-85F on the hot side and maybe 70-65 on the cool one, with a toasty ~120F (surface temp) basking spot and nightly temperature drops of 10-20 degrees. (ceramic heat emitter still on so it doesn't drop below 65, since we're by the beach and it can get chilly). I did a LOT of research on Australian ecology for this one and I'm quite happy with it. Any ideas for improvements?
