Leased my very first BMW and EV, I'm going on a road trip soon and want to give it a proper wash when I return. What should I know about washing the car? Is an automatic car wash ok (I assume it's not preferable)? Should I take it to a detailing place? How often should I wash it? The car is kept in a garage and it never really rains here (they made a song about it).

I have a bunch of options near me, including one place that puts the car through an automatic wash then goes over it by hand afterwards. It was fine for my old Sonata but I want to keep this car in pristine condition as long as possible and I can't wash it myself for various logistical reasons.

BUT when it comes to hand washing and detailing, what do you use? What are your methods? Links to products and good reference videos are appreciated!

New EV owner as of yesterday (2026 BMW i4 eDrive 40 🎉)

Car came with a charging cable, bought some adapters for Tesla stations. I have a 240v outlet at home, but wondering if it's worth having a portable cable in the car. I live in SoCal so I imagine it won't get too much use, but might run the occasional road trip. Is it worth investing in for the off change I'll need it or is this just a bit of anxiety? What's the difference between a home cable and portable cable? Would it be smarter to pack up my home cable when I think I'd need it?
