Are their records of Einsatzgruppen soldiers refusing to shoot Jews? If so, what happened to them?

I’m used to this situation being presented as, “Well, of course they pulled the trigger. If not, they would have just been shot, too.”

But is that accurate?

What’s the most condescending use of the word “sir” you’ve heard?

At the very beginning of the war in Afghanistan I was with a combined joint special operations forces command in Afghanistan (TF K-Bar). I was the morning intel briefer, so I worked the midwatch, under an Army intel CWO3. Once, a Navy SEAL O-4 barged into the shop and started screaming at me for some mistake he thought I’d made. Pot-bellied, 5-foot-6-inch CWO3 physically interposed himself between me and this SEAL, then calmly backed him out of the intel space. As soon as the door closed, you could hear the chief reading the SEAL the riot act: “Don’t you ever come into MY intel shop and yell at one of MY guys, sir! If YOU have a problem with one of MY joes, you come and you talk to ME! Am I clear, sir?” He came back into the shop, walked past my desk and patted my shoulder, and resumed his watch station. I’d storm the gates of hell for that guy.

Girls names we would have used

My wife and I have two boys, but we were unable to have any more kids—and I’d really wanted to have both boys and girls. I’m bummed we never got to use the girls’ names we picked, so I’m offering them up to the internets, in case they inspire anybody.

“Eden Evelyn [last name].” I’m a Bible scholar, so the first name (which means “abundance” in Hebrew) is both an allusion to my studies, and to abundance in family. Evelyn is for my grandmother-in-law, who basically raised my wife.

“Eirene Ann [last name].” (Pronounced “eh-REN-ee.”) Eirene means “peace” in biblical Greek, so not only is it an allusion to my work, it also completes the symmetry between an Old Testament name and a New. Ann is for a dear, dear friend of ours who we wanted to honor for her place in our family’s life.

Adopting a pet doesn’t make you a parent

Saw a post of a guy holding puppy, with the title “I became a father.” Buddy. No. You became a pet owner. That is not a human baby. You did not sure nor bear that puppy. It is not the same species as you are. There is no such thing as a “pet parent.” Pet ownership is not even remotely similar to having a human child.
